  • Patent number: 6461459
Abstract: Method and apparatus for highly efficiently forming a tire reinforcing layer, such as a carcass ply or belt ply, either directly or indirectly on a rubber member which is supported on a rigid core having a toroidal shape. According to the invention, a continuous strip of reinforcing material comprised of a plurality of single cords or twisted cords is cut into reinforcing elements having a predetermined length. The reinforcing elements are successively fed to the rubber member from one side of the core, synchronously with an indexing movement of the core about its center axis. The reinforcing elements are then urged against the outer surface of the rubber member on the core along their longitudinal direction and thereby progressively pressure-joined to the rubber member.

  • Patent number: 5879484
Abstract: A run flat pneumatic tire is reinforced by a thin annular composite band imbedded in the crown portion of the tire in combination with a plurality of radial cords or plies in its sidewalls which have freedom in shear with respect to one another. The band is formed by a plurality of layers of material strips wherein each strip is wound in a helical pattern, with adjacent strips being wound at reverse angles to each other. Each layer is formed under sufficient pressure and at an elevated temperature whereby the band is prestressed in tension which decreases the maximum stress at the footprint area of the tire. The invention furthermore incorporates the method of imparting the prestress on the annular band during its manufacture.

The textile material comprises warp cords and weft cords; the weft cords are used to convey the warp cords through a heat setting oven without applying substantial tension to the warp cords, so as to not change their stress-strain properties. In the illustrated embodiment, the warp cords are aramid cords having a linear density of 500 to 3600 Denier and a twist multiplier of 5 to 8. The cords can be used in a crown reinforcing spirally wound overlay structure of a tire.
