  • Publication number: 20090022921
Abstract: A process for manufacturing a composite block of closed geometry, in the form of a continuous ring, based on fibres and on a crosslinkable resin, by continuous winding and superposition of several layers of a tape of reinforcement fibres embedded in a matrix based on a composition comprising a crosslinkable resin. The process comprises from upstream to downstream, the following steps: producing a rectilinear arrangement (12) of reinforcement fibres (11) and conveying this arrangement in a feed direction (F); degassing the arrangement (12) of fibres by the action of a vacuum (13); after degassing, impregnating said arrangement (12) of fibres under vacuum with said resin composition in the liquid state (17); passing the pre-preg thus obtained through a die (20) to make said pre-preg into the form of a tape (21) composed of reinforcement fibres (11) in their liquid resin (17) matrix, the thickness of said tape being less than 0.

  • Patent number: 5094044
Abstract: An improved dome structure on a base is disclosed comprising, in the preferred embodiment, of a membrane sandwiched between layers of rigidifying material such as shotcrete or reinforced composite which also serve to embed radial wires and circumferential tensioned prestressing. Various types of circumferential tensioned prestressing can be applied to minimize bursting stresses and can consist of steel wire as well as fiber or steel-reinforced tape. Further layers of rigidifying material can then be applied over the circumferential prestressing as a final protection and cover. The radial wires can contain spacers or hooks to preclude the circumferential prestressing from riding up on the structure. The lower portion of the dome can include a reverse curvature to minimize stresses and stabilize the structure. The rigidifying material may be composite which can be hardened by light curing. A second outer membrane can also be used for weather protection.

  • Patent number: 4904431
Abstract: A method of manufacturing soft tip catheters having inner rigid polymer layers and outer soft, pliable polymer layers. The method involves first extruding the rigid polymer at varying extrusion rates to form a cylindrical body having a depression at one or more prescribed locations. The outer layer is formed by extruding the soft, pliable polymer over the inner to fill in the depressions. The resulting cylindrical body is then cut to form individual catheters having soft tip as defined by a portion of the prescribed locations.

  • Patent number: 4854991
Abstract: Apparatus and method for producing, on a commercial scale, forming tubes of high quality and uniformity including one or more beads on the outer periphery of the tubes which terminate a desired distance from the tube end edges by sequentially cutting the bead cord material to the desired length and at the desired time relative to the tube ends and feeding such cut bead cord material between selected tube plies during the winding of the plies on a mandrel to form tubular material and then cutting the tubular material to form tubes of the desired length. Also, such apparatus and method provide for the picking up and rolling of the beads which are interrupted on the outer periphery of the tubular material and the subsequent cutting of the tubular material intermediate such bead interruptions.

  • Patent number: 4830694
Abstract: An improved pressure-withstanding pipe according to the invention is made of a soft synthetic resin or rubber material with hard synthetic resin reinforcing bodies helically wound and embedded in the pipe wall at predetermined intervals. A thin reinforcing belt member is also helically wound and embedded in the pipe wall and the opposite side end portions of the belt are anchored in adjacent ones of the rigid reinforcing bodies. The method of manufacturing a pipe according to the invention includes a step of extruding the pipe forming body by feeding rigid synthetic reinforcing material and soft synthetic material to the extruder and, at the same time, passing the thin reinforcing belt member therethrough. The resultant pipe according to the invention is highly resistant to extension and other deformation due to pressure exerted from the material being transported as well as highly resistant to external pressure and deformation from such pressure.

  • Patent number: 4708756
Abstract: A process of producing a pliable roller uses a flexible strip of material with a tension element longitudinally therealong, the tension element having a lesser longitudinal extensibility than the flexible strip of material. The tension element and the flexible strip of material are fixed together and portions of the flexible strip of material are longitudinally folded together along the tension element. At least after the fixing, the flexible strip of material with the tension element longitudinally therealong is wound, longitudinally, about a roller core in such manner as to form contiguous windings thereabout projecting outwardly from the roller core.

  • Patent number: 4702867
Abstract: A method for continuously vulcanizing hoses which comprises two steps: microwave vulcanization; and conventional vulcanization by heat conduction through a heating medium. A layer of heat-resistant synthetic resin which has a melting point higher than the vulcanizing temperature is provided over the outer periphery of a rubber hose in a uniform thickness. This layer is in close contact with the hose but not adherent thereto. After the resin layer is cooled and hardened, the rubber hose is heated and cured in a microwave vulcanizing tank before being subjected to vulcanization by heat conduction through a heating medium in an ordinary vulcanizing tank. After completion of vulcanization, the layer of synthetic resin is peeled off and removed.

  • Patent number: 4689174
Abstract: A system is disclosed for the production of double-walled helically wound thermoplastic pipe. The apparatus includes an endless former (10) of the axially advancing and rotating type for forming a band of thermoplastic material (24) into a corrugated outer wall (26). An internal extruding device (28) extends along the core of the former and extrudes a second band (34) of thermoplastic material onto the interior of the outer wall. A cold shoe (36) presses the inner wall against the outer wall to form a smooth inner wall (42) of the double-walled pipe. It is also possible to provide for the insertion of a reinforcing profile in the corrugations of the outer wall.

  • Patent number: 4637941
Abstract: A segmented geometric structure that when rotated serves as a functional mood-setting device or simply as a static or rotatable object d'art. The structure is comprised of a plurality of spirally formed curvilinear segments that are joined at their respective top and bottom to form a single rigid structure. The structure may take the form of a spheroid, ellipsoid or any other three-dimensional geometric form amenable to a segmented construction. The structure is suspended by means of a suspension line that is attached to an elevated support or a shaft may be attached to either the top or bottom end of the structure. The other end of the shaft is attached to a reversible electrical motor that is housed within a mounting base. When the structure is rotated, either manually or by the motor, in a clockwise direction the segments appear to move spirally upwards conversely when rotated in a counter clockwise direction the segments appear to move spirally downward.
