Patent number: 8075979Abstract: A non-fibrous ultra high molecular weight polyethylene tape having a width of 1-inch or greater and a modulus of 1,400 grams per denier or greater. The non-fibrous UHMWPE tape is obtained by compression molding ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene powder at a temperature below its melting point and then drawing and stretching the entire resultant compression molded UHMWPE sheet, with no slitting or splitting of the sheet, at a draw ratio of at least 100:1. The UHMWPE tape can be produced in weights of 6,000 to 90,000 denier or greater. The UHMWPE tape of the present invention minimizes the effect of stress concentrators that are prevalent with fibers and thereby enables the tape to be drawn at much higher draw ratios than is possible with fibrous UHMWPE. When used in ballistics panels, the high modulus high molecular weight polyethylene tape of the present invention improves ballistic performance by providing enhanced dissipation of the impact energy of a projectile.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2011Date of Patent: December 13, 2011Assignee: BAE System Tensylon H.P.M., Inc.Inventors: Gene C. Patent number: 7976932Abstract: A ballistic resistant panel including a strike face portion and a backing portion. The strike face portion includes a plurality of interleaved layers of non-fibrous ultra high molecular weight polyethylene tape. The backing portion includes a plurality of interleaved layers of cross-plied fibers of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene. The entire stack of interleaved layers is compressed at high temperature and pressure to form a ballistic resistant panel having a strike face on one side. Patent number: 7833369Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to webs, components, composites, and strands comprising re-activatable adhesive compositions, as well as health-and-hygiene products employing such webs, components, composites, and strands. By inputting energy to the web, component, composite, or strand (including, for example, an elastic web, component, composite, or strand) comprising a re-activatable adhesive composition, the adhesive is activated (i.e., rendered tacky) so that it can be used to join or adhere the web, component, composite, or strand to another material (or another location on the same web, component, composite, or strand). Generally, energy will be inputted to the adhesive in the form of infrared heat, heat, or ultrasonic energy, although any energy form may be used, so long as the energy is capable of activating the adhesive. Prior to activation, webs, components, composites, and strands comprising such re-activatable adhesives are convenient to handle because the adhesive is not yet tacky.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2005Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Peiguang Zhou, Gregory K. Patent number: 7685696Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the manufacture of a sensor element and to a sensor element. In the method, both surfaces of a sensor film are provided with metallic electrodes. The sensor element is produced by cutting it from a larger amount of sensor element material. In the manufacture of the sensor element material, the electrodes are produced as a continuous process from roll to roll and the sensor element material is formed by laminating as a continuous process from roll to roll. At least the signal electrode consists of repeated electrode patterns (41) which are at least partially connected to each other via one or more narrow connecting strips (42), and a sensor element of a desired length and/or shape is produced by cutting the material across the region of the connecting strips.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 2004Date of Patent: March 30, 2010Assignee: Emfitech OyInventor: Heikki Räisänen

Patent number: 7687111Abstract: In a method for structuring the surface of a substrate, a substrate is elastically expanded by the application of a tensile stress so that a surface area of the substrate in which a structure is to be created, is enlarged. Then, in the surface area, a structure is produced that is larger than the structure to be produced. For this purpose at least one solution is applied to the substrate, which solvent contains at least one solid substance dissolved in a solvent. The solvent is then removed from the surface of the substrate so that the solid substance remains behind. The expansion of the substrate is at least partly reversed by the reduction or removal of the tensile stress so that the size of the structure is reduced to the size of the structure to be produced. In the material of the substrate, a compression stress can also be created to reduce the size of the structure to the size of the structure to be produced.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2004Date of Patent: March 30, 2010Assignee: Micronas GmbHInventor: Mirko Lehmann

Patent number: 7585382Abstract: A nonwoven composite that exhibits latent elastic properties is provided. More specifically, latent elasticity may be imparted by blending a thermoplastic elastomer with a polyolefin that is capable of forming semi-crystalline domains among the amorphous elastomeric chains, and then forming a film from the blend. The film is then stretched in one or more directions to orient the amorphous elastomer chains. Without intending to be limited by theory, the present inventors believe that the oriented state of the amorphous chains may be held in place by the relatively stiff semi-crystalline olefin domains. Subsequently, the stretched film may be activated (e.g., heated) to shrink the film and provide it with “latent” stretchability. For instance, the stretched film may be heated at or above the softening temperature of the polyolefin to soften the crystalline domains and allow the amorphous chains to return to their unoriented state.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2006Date of Patent: September 8, 2009Assignee: Kimberly-Clark worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Janis Wilson Hughes, Tamara Lee Mace, Christian Sanders, Jose Siqueira

Patent number: 7582178Abstract: A nonwoven composite that exhibits latent elastic properties is provided. The composite is formed from an elastic film laminated to a nonwoven web facing. Latent elasticity may be imparted to the elastic film through the combination of a thermoplastic elastomer and a polyolefin capable of forming semi-crystalline domains among the amorphous elastomeric chains. More specifically, the elastic film may be stretched in one or more directions to orient the elastomer chains. Without intending to be limited by theory, the present inventors believe that the oriented state of the chains may be held in place by the relatively stiff semi-crystalline domains of the polyolefin. The stretched elastic film may subsequently be relaxed and bonded to a nonwoven web facing to form the composite. The composite may be later activated (e.g., heated) to shrink the elastic film and provide it with “latent” stretchability.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2006Date of Patent: September 1, 2009Assignee: Kimberly-Clark worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Janis W.
