Sequential Winding Of Separate Webs Patents (Class 156/190)
  • Patent number: 6793754
Abstract: A covered roll is disclosed. Under an exemplary embodiment, the covered roll includes a roll core base, an under-layer formed of densely packed fibers and a covering layer. The under-layer, which may include straight and directionally oriented fibers, is infused with a thermoset resin and circumferentially surrounds the roll core base. The covering layer, which may be formed of a rubber, urethane, thermoset resin or other plastics, circumferentially surrounds the under-layer. The resin infused under-layer provides improved strength to the resulting covered roll and improves adhesion between the covering layer and the metal roll core.

  • Patent number: 6617007
Abstract: A method and apparatus of forming coreless rolls of pressure sensitive adhesive tape involves the use of a mandrel assembly having a specific circumferential tape supporting segment thereon for winding tape. The circumferential tape supporting segment has a tape engaging surface portion that, in a radial orientation, is compressible yet sufficiently stiff to support the tape as it is successively wound about the mandrel to form a tape roll, and that is sufficiently pliant to permit ready axial removal of a wound tape roll from the shaft. The innermost wrap of pressure sensitive adhesive tape about the mandrel is masked by an adhesive liner. That liner is formed from one portion of a liner/tab segment which had been applied to the tape previously, and prior to winding, the tape is severed, and the remainder of that liner/tab forms an end tab on the outermost end of the previously formed coreless tape roll.

  • Publication number: 20030124287
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a multi-layered structure which for a given external geometry a section of interest may be integrally reinforced by varying the relative proportions of the layers in that section. That is, the layers making up the structure may have varying relative proportions to the structure's overall thickness between two or more positions while the structure maintains a constant thickness between the positions. By varying the relative proportions of the structure's layers, the mechanical properties of the structure may be selectively altered from a first position to a second position without altering the structure's external profile. This is especially desirable in composite sandwich structures used in aerospace applications which often require additional reinforcement at structural interfaces.

  • Patent number: 5713824
Abstract: A method is provided of manufacturing an easy-open container. A bodywall layer strip is positioned on a wider liner layer strip to define first and second edge portions on the side of the wider liner layer which extends transversely beyond the bodywall layer side edges. These layers are fed to a mandrel and the first liner layer edge portion is folded-over onto an outside surface of the bodywall layer and a high strength bond is formed therebetween. The resulting layers are spirally wound on the mandrel to form a continuous tube having a spiral seam with the bodywall layer side edges forming a butt joint and with each of the first and second liner layer edge portions extending through the butt joint and out of the spiral seam. The second liner layer edge portion is positioned on the first folded-over liner layer edge portion and a low strength bond is formed therebetween. A flexible label layer is spirally wound onto the tube on the mandrel with its longitudinal edges in overlapped relationship.

  • Patent number: 5665192
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a composite material in the form of an annular tube by winding on a mandrel both a reinforcing fiber fabric and a sheet of matrix material, comprising the following steps: 1) preheating the mandrel to a predetermined temperature; 2) fixing the reinforcing fiber fabric and the sheet of matrix material to the mandrel; 3) causing the mandrel to rotate at a nominal speed to wind the fabric and the sheet simultaneously, the fabric and the sheet being subjected to a nominal tension; 4) actuating heating means for heating the material and cooling means for cooling the mandrel; 5) when the tube reaches the desired diameter, stopping both the heating means and the rotation of the mandrel; 6) after a determined duration that is sufficient for; bringing the temperature of the mandrel to the predetermined preheating temperature, stopping the cooling means; and 7) dismounting the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 5651850
Abstract: A hybrid composite structure is formed from layers of gore strips (12), polymeric matrix composite (71) comprising a resin impregnated slit tape or tow, and a central honeycomb layer formed from a plurality of rectangular sections (72). The first two steps include forming a plurality of the gore strips and providing a mold, or lay-up mandrel (10). Thereafter, a first set of gore strips is applied to the lay-up mandrel to form a first gore strip layer. Subsequently, the composite material in form of resin impregnated slit tape or tow is applied to the first gore strip layer to form a first composite material layer. Next, a second set of gore strips is applied to the first layer of polymeric matrix composite, opposite the first gore strip layer, to form at least one other gore strip layer. This creates a first sandwich structure having gore strips as the first and last layers of the structure. Thereafter, the layer of honeycomb material is applied to the last layer of the first sandwich structure.

Abstract: A tape is adapted to be secured to a container or other object which when removed therefrom causes the display of a message which was formerly not visible, such as a notification that the object has been tampered with, the tape being provided on one surface with an adhesive layer so that it can be attached to the object and provided on its opposite surface with a release layer so that it can be wound upon itself and readily dispensed without having to remove a protective liner therefrom, the message displayed by the tape both when initially secured to said object and after removal therefrom being located on said one surface of said tape, whereby said tape may be readily and inexpensively manufactured and readily dispensed from appropriate mechanical equipment in large quantity applications.

  • Patent number: 5629062
Abstract: A fiber reinforced plastic pipe comprising a cylindrical inner layer formed by winding a prepreg sheet containing a thermosetting resin as a matrix and an outer layer formed by winding a thermoplastic resin sheet or tape around the inner layer, said inner and outer layers being heat cured and thermocompression bonded in one united body; and a process for manufacturing the fiber reinforced plastic pipe. When the fiber reinforced plastic pipe is manufactured, the thermosetting resin is used for forming the inner layer and the thermoplastic resin is used for forming the outer layer. Moreover, a metal coat can be firmly bonded to the surface of the outer layer. Hence, a fiber reinforced plastic pipe prominently improved in impact resistance, abrasion resistance and lightweight properties can be provided.

  • Patent number: RE37242
Abstract: A frame, a drive mechanism for rotating a mandrel, at least two spindles mounted to the frame, a tensioner, and a belt extending between the first and second spindles may be used to roll pre-preg strips or similar sheets of composite materials around the mandrel. The belt over the spindles, and the spindles guide the belt through changes in its direction of travel. The mandrel is mounted in the drive mechanism in contact with the belt, which changes its direction of travel around the mandrel. The lower surface of the belt bears against portions of the spindles, and the mandrel contacts the upper surface of the belt. As the drive mechanism rotates the mandrel, pre-preg sheets are fed between the mandrel and the belt and are thereby wrapped around the mandrel. The belt presses the pre-preg sheets against the mandrel. The wrapped mandrel may then be removed from the apparatus and cured in any suitable manner known in the art to produce a composite tubular article.
