  • Patent number: 6277229
Abstract: A versatile method of cold transferring images without using supplemental heat in the course of image transfer to a wide variety of substrates includes printing an image with water-based ink onto an image transfer sheet that has a coating of water-accepting adhesive. The sheet is then applied to the substrate to transfer only the portions of the adhesive that bear the image onto the substrate, with the remainder of the adhesive remaining attached to the sheet. A method of manufacturing image transfer sheets includes first applying a water impermeable layer onto a flexible substrate. A layer of water-activatable adhesive is applied upon the water impermeable layer. The adhesive is then dried in a dryer with dehumidified air. A water permeable detack layer is then applied upon the layer of adhesive.

  • Patent number: 6277230
Abstract: A method and a system for efficiently using media stamped on a substrate include a feedroller, a shuttle, a cylinder and a control arrangement. The media has at least one registration mark. The feedroller is coupled to the media and provides the media with a first velocity component. A shuttle is coupled to the feedroller via the media and moves linearly with a variable periodic velocity. The shuttle provides the media with a second velocity component, the second velocity component being a function of the velocity of the shuttle. A cylinder has at least one die and a stamping area in which one of the at least one die urges the media against a substrate. The media and the substrate have same velocity in the stamping area during the urging, but the substrate has a greater average velocity than an average velocity of the media. A control arrangement is coupled to the feedroller, the shuttle and the cylinder. The control arrangement maintains a registration between the media and substrate.

  • Patent number: 6270612
Abstract: A multi-purpose laminating and adhesive transfer apparatus having a frame supporting rotatably engaging nip rollers. A replaceable cartridge is insertable into the frame and has upper and lower feed rolls which may be a laminate, film or paper, or an adhesively coated film or a film having an affinity for adhesive. The upper and lower feed rolls containing the webs of laminating or adhesive transfer material have tensioning caps which can be adjusted to provide the proper tensioning to prevent the rollers from overrunning as they rotate. Tensioning caps and the cartridges are pre-set and provided to the user. A cutter blade is positioned at the discharge side of the nip rollers and may be actuated to sever the master at any desired location. The apparatus may be operated to apply lamination to either top or bottom surfaces of a substrate or an adhesive to the top or bottom surface of the substrate or to both surfaces.

In an alternative embodiments the label includes an adhesive layer for applying the label to a substrate, such that the plurality of integrally joined layers including the electrical circuit are transferrable to the receiving surface and are otherwise inseparable from the carrier film without destruction of the electrical circuit.

Abstract: A metal leaf adhesive transferring sheet is disclosed and includes a transfer sheet which is provided with a paper backing and a release layer. The release layer of the transfer sheet is coated with an adhesive. The adhesive may be transferred to a substrate by either burnishing an image on the first side of the transfer sheet or wetting the transfer sheet if a water release type release sheet is used. Thereafter, metal leaf may be applied to the adhesive image that is transferred to the substrate. A method of transferring metal leaf to a substrate is also disclosed.

Abstract: In a method of transferring a security element which is in the form of a laminate with a carrier foil and with a thermally activatable adhesive layer for connection to a substrate onto a document the adhesive layer is brought into contact with the substrate and locally heated by the supply of heat energy through the laminate. After the adhesive layer cools if necessary the carrier foil can be pulled off the substrate, in which case the carrier foil, at the locations adhering to the substrate, is detached from the rest of the laminate and the laminate tears along the boundary between the adhering and the non-adhering locations so that only the adhering locations of the laminate remain behind on the substrate. In particular a laser beam or an array of laser or light emitting diodes is suitable for the supply of heat energy. The laminate preferably has diffraction structures or layers producing optical interference effects.

Abstract: Rigid signs are prepared by a facile method of fixing an image to a rigid substrate coated with a thermally tackifiable coating. The image is readily produced through the use of a computer graphics program, and the image is printed onto a transfer film using a conventional computer printer. The image-bearing surface of the transfer film is then joined in pressing contact with the thermoplastic coating which has been warmed to a softened or tacky state. Upon cooling the thermoplastic coating to a hard, durable state, the transfer film is removed leaving the image securedly affixed to the rigid substrate.

Abstract: In accordance with the invention, an electronic device having one or more contact pads is placed in contact with a carrier sheet bearing an array of transferable solder particles. Heat is applied to adhere the solder to the contact pads, and solder is selectively transferred onto the contact pads. In a preferred embodiment the solder-carrying medium comprises elastomeric material and the solder particles comprise solder-coated magnetic particles. Application of a magnetic field while the elastomer is curing produces a regular array of solder coated particles. Using this method, devices having smaller than conventional contact structures can be readily interconnected.

  • Patent number: 5827389
Abstract: A material sheet assembly in which a label base attached to a release liner by means of an adhesive is set in roll form is used. In a step in which the material sheet assembly is continuously fed out, the release liner is released by leaving the adhesive on the label base, and the release liner is consecutively taken up. By using a noncontact-type printer, printing is effected on the adhesive surface of the label base separated from the release liner to form a printed label. The printed label is in such a form that the printed surface is disposed between the label base and an adherend. The labels can be attached immediately after they are manufactured, and they can be stored or transported by being taken up in roll form while an additional release liner is attached to the printed surface side.

Labels printed with fixed information are provided on a master roll. The endmost label is printed with variable information, separated from the master roll, and then assembled into the decal assembly. For use, the releasable web is peeled back to reveal the adhesive web, the label, and the backing web.
