Patent number: 5122216Abstract: In a preferred method for affixing a discrete paper label to the mailer, a discrete paper label is suctioned onto the rotatable platen at a first predetermined position relative to the circumferential perimeter of the platen. As the rotatable platen rotates, adhesive is applied to a predetermined exposed portion of the paper label at a second predetermined position relative to the circumferential perimeter. Finally, at a third predetermined position relative to the circumferential perimeter, the paper label is blown off the rotatable platen and onto an adjacent continuously advancing web comprising multi-ply mailer forms each having a plurality of sheets in superimposed relationship. The paper label is thus affixed to a multi-ply mailed form at a predetermined location. Preferably, the rotatable platen receives a new paper label at the first predetermined position as the adhesive is applied to the label previously received on the platen.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1990Date of Patent: June 16, 1992Assignee: Goodwin Graphics, Inc.Inventor: Thomas A. Patent number: 5073221Abstract: Magnetic stripes are applied to magnetically readable credit cards by incorporating the magnetic stripes in a cover sheet and laminating this cover sheet to a core stock sheet and then severing the laminated assembly into individual cards. The magnetic material bearing cover sheet is made by feeding the cover sheet without stripes continuously through a nip along with a plurality of tapes. Each tape is a laminate originally including a release layer, a magnetic layer, an adhesive layer, in that order, on a carrier layer. Heat and pressure applied to the nip releases the magnetic layer from the carrier layer and activates the adhesive layer to bond the magnetic layer of each tape to the original cover sheet, thus forming a stripe on the cover sheet. Distortion of the cover sheet by substantial shrinkage or wrinkling due to the heat effects resulting from the bonding operation are effectively eliminated by the use of a chill roller.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1989Date of Patent: December 17, 1991Assignee: Crown Roll Leaf, Inc.Inventors: Robert R. Patent number: 5000808Abstract: A fiber wallboard, or similar rigid or non-rigid substrate, is directed via a conveyor through a roll coater for providing an adhesive layer on one side of the substrate. Packages of continuous strands, such as textile yarns, are supported on a yarn creel, and drawn through expansion combs and underneath a nip roll for being press rolled into the adhesive coating layer. The pattern of lateral yarn separation established with the expansion combs creates a particular design on the finished face of the substrate, and may be varied. The substrate with applied strands is dried and trimmed. Marginal edge yarns are particularly located relative the substrate edges so that yarn gaps surround seams between adjacent panel substrates. Seaming tape with additional textile yarns supported thereon may be fitted in the gaps to hide such seams.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1988Date of Patent: March 19, 1991Inventor: George L. Deviney

Patent number: 4838969Abstract: A moving web is folded at predetermined lengths at its opposite side portions so that the opposite side portions are opposed to each other at a predetermined angle with its central portion. Then part of each of the opposite folded portions is outwardly folded. These foldings occur so that a first folding line and a second folding line being opposed to each other at each side of the web include portions in non-parallel relationship. Elastic bands are affixed onto the web along the second opposite folded portions longitudinally and substantially in parallel to each other. When the web is flattened from the folded condition, the paired elastic band affixed onto the web at its oppsite sides each has a diagonal orientation symmetrically with respect to the direction in which the web moves.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1988Date of Patent: June 13, 1989Assignee: Uni-Charm CorporationInventors: Hironori Nomura, Shimakawa Taiji, Junji Shinohara, Shigetoyo Kobayashi, Hiroki Yamamoto

Patent number: 4505771Abstract: An arrangement, apparatus, and method for alternately stacking material, such as copper, glass, etc. to form a stack of uncured laminates in a laminating press line. A material sheet pick-up and depositing head has at least one compartment which receives negative air pressure for a pick-up mode, and positive air pressure for a material sheet depositing mode. A slightly curved convexed surface on the underside of this head may cooperate with the positive pressure in first forcing the center of the sheet downwardly and then outwardly onto the build-up station, whereby air is dispelled from between the sheet and the already uncured stacked laminates, resulting in the sheet being placed smoothly onto the stacked laminates. Patent number: 4270967Abstract: This invention concerns an improved gluing machine and a continuous method of operation which allows the gluing process to proceed at a rate that equals the feed rate of vacuum rotary document feeders. The machine includes a unique registry and guide system for efficiently moving documents fed initially in an individual manner in a continuous, flowing manner from an initial input feed device to the gluing and registry point with the carrier. The feed system not only allows substantially greater operating speeds but simultaneously overlaps documents while establishing and maintaining correct registration of the documents. The documents are overlapped so that following documents are positioned beneath leading documents. This overlapped condition together with the registry achieved within the feed system assures each individual document arrives in proper registry with areas of glue previously applied at preselected intervals on the carrier sheet.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1979Date of Patent: June 2, 1981Inventor: Clendon W.
