  • Patent number: 5810961
Abstract: Compositions and methods for manufacturing sheets having a starch-bound matrix reinforced with fibers and optionally including an inorganic mineral filler. Suitable mixtures for forming the sheets are prepared by mixing together water, unmodified and ungelatinized starch granules, a cellulosic ether, fibers, and optionally an inorganic mineral filler in the correct proportions to form a sheet having desired properties. The mixtures are formed into sheets by passing them between one or more sets of heated rollers to form green sheets. The heated rollers cause the cellulosic ether to form a skin on the outer surfaces of the sheet that prevents the starch granules from causing the sheet to adhere to the rollers upon gelation of the starch. The green sheets are passed between heated rollers to gelatinize the starch granules, and then to dry the sheet by removing a substantial portion of the water by evaporation.

  • Patent number: 5804024
Abstract: A paper-film laminate sealing tape for sealing a corrugated board carton or other article fabricated of recyclable material. The tape is composed of a base ply formed of oriented synthetic plastic film whose opposing surfaces are corona-discharge treated to render them wettable and receptive to adhesives, and a paper face ply cold laminated to the base ply by a water-based adhesive. The exposed surface of the film base ply is coated with a water-remoistenable adhesive, such as a starch, so that when this adhesive is moistened in a tape dispenser, the sealing tape can then be adhered to the carton. Since the re-moistenable adhesive is coated on the film ply which is water-impermeable, when this adhesive is moistened with water it remains in a moistened state in a condition to be applied to the carton for a controlled "open-time" period.

Abstract: The disclosed apparatus implements a method of joining two sheets of heat transfer paper into a single sheet almost twice as wide for use in heat transfer printing of extra wide cloth. The paper is withdrawn from source rolls and passed along first and second respective web paths with a very slight overlap between the papers. A glue station applies a speed controlled amount of glue to the overlap region of one paper and the edges of the paper are brought together in the desired overlapping relationship. The thus joined paper is passed through compression rollers and wound onto a resilient rewind roll. Edge sensors in each of the web paths maintain the overlap alignment of the paper paths and tension sensors in each of the paths maintain a desired level of tension. A video camera imaging system provides the operator with periodic video images of a magnified region of the overlap so that proper registration between the patterns on the respective papers can be maintained.

Plates of this kind are employed, for example, as passage-containing plates in hydraulic blocks for ABS/ASR/VDC systems, the depressions or apertures serving as passages or holes and the coating being a seal. In this invention the depressions or apertures are formed in an uncoated plate and then the plate is coated. As a result, the life of the machining tools is extended, the machining tolerances become smaller and the rate of machining can be increased.

Abstract: A rubber layered structure used for a weather strip or a glass run, which includes an EPDM rubber base and an ornamental surface layer or a functional surface layer for enhancing slidability of a door glass. An ornamental or functional surface layer is stuck to an EPDM rubber base with a laminated film. The laminated film includes a first layer of an olefin resin with polar functional groups and a second layer of a polar thermoplastic resin. The first layer, which includes a non-polar olefin resin and polar functional groups, adheres to both the EPDM rubber base and the second layer of a polar resin such as polyester. The second layer securely adheres to the surface layer.

Abstract: Encapsulated glass fiber insulation is made by forming a covering material over the top surface of a mineral fiber core, with the formed covering material extending adjacent the side surfaces. The covering material is greater in width than the sum of the widths of the top and two side surfaces, so that the edges of the formed covering material extend beyond the mineral fiber core. A vacuum is applied below the mineral fiber core to draw the formed covering material extending beyond the side surfaces under the core.

  • Patent number: 5685934
Abstract: A spray device is prepared has a plurarity of nozzles each of which has a capillary tube surrounded by a gas discharge pore at the end of the nozzle. A molten resin liquid is blown out to a reinforcing fiber from the capillary tube by heated air stream discharged through the gas discharge pore, so that a binder resin layer is formed on the reinforcing fiber. Following this, a resin-permeable supporting sheet and then a back-up sheet are applied to the binder resin layer side of the reinforcing fiber, and a releasing sheet is applied to the other side of the reinforcing fiber. The thus obtained superposed layers are pressed to adhere the reinforicing fiber, the supporting fiber and the back-up sheet to each other.

  • Patent number: 5679200
Abstract: A process for producing laminated materials in which one or more polymer films are laminated to a metal strip by a combination of heat and pressure. Generally, polymer films are applied to both sides of the metal strip in a lamination nip which exerts a force of at least 15 kN/m. The nip rolls may also be at different temperatures, either by one nip roll being of conducting material such as steel and the other nip roll being of insulating material, or by actively cooling one of the rolls. This enables films having different softening temperatures to be laminated without risk of micro-blistering or of pick-up on the rolls.
