  • Patent number: 11865801
Abstract: In a shaping station (13), a toroidal forming drum (23) is positioned within a carcass sleeve (12) comprising at least one carcass ply (3) associated with a pair of beads (6) in radially inner position. The carcass sleeve (12) is toroidally shaped by radial expansion of the forming drum (23). The forming drum (23) carrying the shaped carcass sleeve (12) is removed from the shaping station (13). Tyre components (7, 8, 9) are applied externally on the shaped carcass sleeve (12), carried by the forming drum (23). At the end of the shaping and during the application of the tyre components (7, 8, 9), axially inner sides of said beads (6) are arranged axially against respective circumferential axially outer portions (S1) of an abutment surface (S) carried by the expanded forming drum (23), having shape corresponding to an inner shape of the shaped carcass sleeve (12).

Abstract: A rotary radial expand collapse tire building drum comprises segments defining an outer circumference of said drum, said segments being divided into two sets, one set being located to each opposite side of a transverse central plane of the drum, said central plane being disposed normal to a rotational axis of the drum, said two sets being adapted to be driven by a rotatable hub assembly between a collapsed position in which a formed tire carcass may be removed from the drum and an expanded position in which a tire carcass may be formed on said drum wherein each set of segments are mounted for selective relative axial using positioning means, and adjustment means is located outside of the rotational axis of the drum, which is arranged to adjust an overall working width of said drum. The invention allows for an axial positioning mechanism of a REC building drum.

Abstract: A locking spacer for use with a tire building drum is disclosed. The locking spacer includes an arcuate panel having an outer surface, an inner surface, opposite first and second curved side surfaces, and opposite first and second straight end surfaces. The panel is sized and shaped to span between and extend along the opposing inner surfaces of the segments. A first fastener is disposed along the first side surface and is configured to secure the first side surface to a first of the pair of segments, and a second fastener is disposed along the second side surface and is configured to secure the second side surface to a second of the pair of segments. The first and second fasteners limit movement of the first and second side surfaces in relation to the segments along a radial direction of the tire building drum.

Abstract: By increasing the number of segments constituting the outer periphery of a tire building drum, sufficient roundness is ensured for the tire building drum in a wide diameter expansion/reduction range. The tire building drum used for manufacture of an unvulcanized tire is expanded or reduced in diameter in at least a part of the outer periphery by displacing a plurality of extensible/contractible segments sequentially arranged in the drum peripheral direction. Furthermore, the tire building drum is provided with a pair of segment displacing means which expand/contract the plurality of segments, and the pair of segment displacing means are alternately connected to each of the segments in the drum peripheral direction.
