Patent number: 10421241Abstract: A drum is provided for building a green tire casing. The drum includes sectors, an expander, and an adjuster. The sectors form a circumferential face of the drum. The expander moves the sectors in a radial direction such that, at any given time, all the sectors extend at a same distance from an axis of the drum. The adjuster moves the sectors in the radial direction separately from movement of the sectors caused by the expander. Movement of the sectors by the adjuster is such that, at any given time, all the sectors extend at an equal distance from the axis of the drum. The expander is usable to move the sectors regardless of a position of the sectors caused by an operation of the adjuster.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2016Date of Patent: September 24, 2019Assignee: Compagnie Generale des Etablissements MichelinInventors: Florent Monbrun, Hélène Jaquet, Dominique Leblanc

Patent number: 10322554Abstract: A tire building drum is described that includes an inboard section, a center section and an outboard section. The inboard section has a rotating spindle and a sliding shaft, and the sliding shaft is slidable within the spindle. The inboard section further includes a radially expandable bead lock device mounted on the spindle. The center section has an internal hub mounted on the sliding shaft and further comprises a plurality of tiles that are radially expandable. The outboard section of the drum is mounted on a distal end of the sliding shaft, and further includes a radially expandable bead lock device. The center section and the outboard section are each axially movable by sliding of the sliding shaft.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2014Date of Patent: June 18, 2019Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: George Michael Stoila, Viscardo Baldoni, Thierry Royer, Dale Eugene Wells, Thomas Alan Sells, Minwu Yao

Patent number: 8602078Abstract: Tire-making apparatus (20) defining an outer or inner circumference (18) to serve as a forming surface or as a circumference-engaging surface, respectively, utilizes a frame (16) having a central axis (52) and a plurality of multi-sectional segments (28) which are moveable radially with respect to the central axis and include arcuate surfaces which collectively define the apparatus circumference. Each segment includes a primary section (60) and a secondary section (62) which flanks the primary section. The primary and secondary sections are connected so that as the segments are moved radially of the central axis, the primary and secondary sections move relative to one another along the circumference of the apparatus to help maintain the uniformity, or roundness, of the surface of the circumference collectively defined by the segments.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2011Date of Patent: December 10, 2013Assignee: BPS Engineering, LLCInventor: Mark S. Publication number: 20100230055Abstract: The invention provides a driving apparatus for a tire building drum which can reduce load when the drum is rotating, which enables stable expanding and contracting operations and in which a center shaft portion (2) of the building drum (D) is made up of a cylindrical outer shaft (3) and an inner threaded shaft (4), the driving apparatus including a cylindrical outer shaft (13) which is coupled to the outer shaft (3), an inner shaft (14) coupled to the threaded shaft (4), a first motor (15) which is a rotational driving means coupled to the outer shaft (13) for rotating the drum, and a second motor (20) which is a rotational driving means coupled to the inner shaft (14) via a clutch (21) in such a manner as to be engaged with and disengaged from the inner shaft for expanding or contracting the drum, wherein by switching the clutch (21), when the drum is rotating, the second motor (20) is held out of engagement with the inner shaft (14), while when the drum is expanded or contracted, the second motor (20) is heType: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2006Publication date: September 16, 2010Applicant: TOYO TIRE & RUBBER CO., LTD.Inventors: Tomoyuki Takatsuka, Hirokatsu Mizukusa

Patent number: 7578897Abstract: Provided is a rubber member sticking device which prevents a sheet material held from becoming deformed and stretching during a separation operation, thus suppressing loss of energy and eliminating traces of vacuum holes. When an unvulcanized rubber sheet 12 is stuck, the unvulcanized rubber sheet 12 is supported by a separating surface 14A of a flat plate 14 and fitting surfaces 19A of a lifting member 16 without a difference in level being created therebetween. In this state, the unvulcanized rubber sheet 12 is in close contact with the fitting surfaces 19A of the lifting member 16. When the unvulcanized rubber sheet 12 is separated, a hydraulic jack 20 lowers the lifting member 16 to create a difference in level between the separating surface 14A of the flat plate 14 and the fitting surfaces 19A of the lifting member 16 so that the unvulcanized rubber sheet 12 is supported only by the separating surface 14A of the flat plate 14.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2003Date of Patent: August 25, 2009Assignee: Bridgestone CorporationInventor: Shoju Suzuki

Patent number: 5618374Abstract: A belt and tread drum for use in the manufacture of vehicle tires and having a plurality of circumference-defining segments whose radial position is determined by a camming means. The extent of movement of the camming means is selectable by stop means associated with a central shaft which serves to mount the camming means and the stop means. Visual indication of the selected circumference of the drum is provided.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1994Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: WYKO, Inc.Inventor: Mark S. Byerley

Patent number: 4445963Abstract: A tire building machine including a building drum for receiving a belt-tread assembly and a pair of coaxial shafts having disc members freely rotatable thereon for receiving and supporting a tire carcass. The disc members and shafts are pivotally movable as a unit and the disc members are also movable with respect to one another for engaging annular beads formed on said carcass to effect a seal therewith and permit the introduction of air to inflate said carcass to assume a toroidal shape. A radially expansible and contractable transfer ring, that is axially movable, engages the belt-tread assembly and transfers same from the drum to the carcass prior to the pivoting of the carcass, belts and tread stock into engagement with a rotatably driven stitcher apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1983Date of Patent: May 1, 1984Assignee: Cooper Tire & Rubber CompanyInventors: Karl W. Patent number: 4425180Abstract: The present drum can find application mainly for assembling large-size tire casings. The drum comprises sectors with shoulders provided with a drive for their radial movement. The drive incorporates slide-blocks arranged concentrically with each other on a shaft axially movable therealong. The slide-blocks are articulated, through levers, with the sectors. The midpoint of one of the levers of each slide-block is articulated with the shaft through the link which is half as long as the lever. The shoulders are provided with a mechanism for their relative movement with respect to the sector. The mechanism is made as a cam associated with the lever of radial movement drive of the sector. The cam is adapted to engage one of the toothed segments articulated to the sector. The toothed segments are kinematically associated with each other and are in mesh with the respective toothed racks connected to the shoulders, so that the toothed segment engages the cam through the agency of a pin provided on the cam.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1981Date of Patent: January 10, 1984Assignee: Vsesojuzny Nauchno-Issledovatelsky I Konstruktorsky Institut Po Oborudovaniju Dlya Shinnoi PromyshlennostiInventors: Jury I.
