Patent number: 4834637Abstract: The apparatus for manufacturing ink jet glass tubes includes a vertical mandrel which receives the tubes one at a time from a feeder and rotates them relative to a pair of gas nozzles for their heating. The tube is heated in an axially limited intermediary zone so as to form an hour-glass shaped profile. The profile of the tube is scanned by a television camera which generates two signals indicative of the internal diameter. These are compared electronically with a stored indication of the desired diameter and the two nozzles are rotated into an inactive position when this diameter is reached. The tube is cut along a plane so as to make the profile of the nozzle coincident with a reference profile by a device including an optical device connected to a cutting wheel to permit comparison of the hour-glass profile of the element with the reference profile. The severed end of the tube is then lapped and covered with a non-wettable material.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1986Date of Patent: May 30, 1989Assignee: Ing. C. Patent number: 4414055Abstract: A machine for applying flat-bottomed base cups to round-bottomed plastic bottles. The machine comprises an orbiting conveyor having means for carrying a plurality of bottles and base cups along a predetermined path during which time the base cups are applied to the bottom of the bottles. A bottle loader mechanism is provided for receiving a plurality of bottles directly from a blow-molding machine and transferring the same directly and simultaneously to the conveyor. Means are provided for delivering base cups single file to the conveyor and for removing the bottles from the conveyor after the base cups have been applied.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1980Date of Patent: November 8, 1983Assignee: William P. Patent number: 4411726Abstract: A composite container is disclosed having a synthetic plastic end closure member spin-bonded to the thermoplastic synthetic plastic inner liner layer of a composite container body wall. The synthetic plastic end closure member includes annular downwardly depending inner fin and outer chime portions which are concentrically spaced to define therebetween an annular groove. One of the body and end members is rotated relative to the other member when they are in spaced vertical alignment, whereupon the members are axially displaced together to wedge the upper end of the body member into the annular groove of the end closure member. During this spin bonding process, the fin portion of the end closure member is supported against radial inward deflection, whereby the spinning frictional engagement between the fin portion of the end closure member and the inner liner layer of the body member causes softening and subsequent bonding of the fin portion to the inner liner layer.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1982Date of Patent: October 25, 1983Assignee: Boise Cascade CorporationInventors: Stephen E. Patent number: 4410391Abstract: A method and apparatus for repairing or relining an underground pipeline without having to excavate the pipe is enabled by attaching an expandable sealing unit to the end of a predetermined length of flexible tubing and feeding it through the pipeline. The flexible tubing is fed through the existing pipeline from a point beyond where the existing pipeline exits the earth, usually within the basement of a building. Once positioned in the desired location, the expandable sealing unit is expanded to form a tight seal at the desired location within the pipe by means of heating the expandable sealing unit by a heating unit connected to the source of energy through electrical conductors which pass through the flexible tubing.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1982Date of Patent: October 18, 1983Assignees: UMAC, Inc., Brooklyn Union Gas CompanyInventors: William R. Patent number: 4407686Abstract: The invention generally relates to methods and devices for installing in a tubular shaft multiple strain gages, and more particularly to a method and a device for pneumatically forcing strain gages into seated engagement with the internal surfaces of a tubular shaft in an installation of multiple strain gages in a tubular shaft. The essence of the invention involves the novel concept of seating strain gages or other electronic devices in a template-like component, wrapping the template-like component about a pneumatically expansible body, inserting the component into a shaft and expanding the body pneumatically, a suitable adhesive having been applied to the surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1981Date of Patent: October 4, 1983Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Clarence E. Patent number: 4395300Abstract: Apparatus and method for applying plastic base cups to plastic containers, such plastic containers being blow-molded, having round bottoms and being unable to stand erect, such base cups providing a flat, stable base for the container. Cups are supplied automatically to holders or sockets at a cup receiving station; they are then indexed to an adhesive applying station where a circular line of adhesive is applied to the bottom of the cup by spinning the cup; the cup is then indexed to a container delivery station, where a container is deposited in the cup, and air under pressure is applied to the interior of the container to apply pressure to the glue line, such pressure also acting to smooth out irregularities in the container. Each container-cup assembly is removed at a removal station. Detector means may be employed at or ahead of the adhesive applying station to determine whether a cup is present in a holder.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1981Date of Patent: July 26, 1983Assignee: B & H Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventor: Wolfgang Hoffmann

Patent number: 4391661Abstract: In providing an electrically insulative covering for a cable splice, a sleeve is assembled with an outer rigid shell and is maintained in fluid-sealed relation therewith. A supply of positively pressurized air is placed with the assembled sleeve and outer member, in fluid-sealed relation with the sleeve interior. The sleeve is expanded into contiguous relation with the outer member by the pressurized air. The expanded assembly is placed over the splice and the fluid-sealed relation of sleeve and outer member is interrupted, causing the sleeve to collapse upon the splice and cables, whereupon the outer member is removed and discarded.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1981Date of Patent: July 5, 1983Assignee: Thomas & Betts CorporationInventor: Hyman Izraeli
