Abstract: Fiber tow carrying a resin powder is dispensed from an unwind creel with the tow spread out using a comb. From here the tow is directed between a pair of bands and pressed onto the outer surface of a heated impregnation wheel. It is compressed against the wheel to melt the resin powder. The resin moves in a liquid state to be uniformly distributed across the tow strands. Pressure is applied by wheels pressing on the bands. The result is a composite tape that is cooled upon leaving the impregnation wheel and then wound onto a rewind drum or spool.

  • Patent number: 6800164
Abstract: A composite reinforcing rod is formed by providing a reinforcing material supply of fiber strands rovings; a resin supply bath, and a puller for pulling the resin-impregnated reinforcing material through the resin bath. A hot compression (or autoclave) apparatus includes two half autoclave molds, which can be arranged in a reciprocating die autoclave or a tractor die autoclave process. • Patent number: 6742560
Abstract: Two flat fiber bundles of non-twisted filaments are arranged in an overlapped relationship or in a parallel and adjoining relationship, and held by a gripper at two points spaced apart from each other in the filament-extending direction. Compressed air is injected from a nozzle to the overlapped portion of the fiber bundles between the holding points at a plurality of positions arranged in the direction transverse to the filament-extending direction to cause the adjacent filaments to be entangled. The nozzle is moved across the fiber bundles while injecting air. Filaments are thus opened and rotated by the injected air, and thus entangled. • Patent number: 6533882
Abstract: In one general aspect, the invention involves applying a chemical treatment to fibers, such as reinforcing fibers suitable for making a composite article, so as to size and/or preimpregnate the fibers. The chemical treatment has a relatively low viscosity and is substantially solvent-free and non-radiation curable. Heat energy may be employed to lower the viscosity and improve the wetting ability of the applied treatment and/or to increase the molecular weight of, or otherwise cure, the treatment with essentially no generation of solvent vapor. The treated fibers are used to form a composite strand, which may be subsequently processed in-line or off-line into a composite article having fibers disposed in a polymeric matrix. Another general aspect relates to encased composite strands, in thread or pellet form, and to wire-coating methods and apparatus for making them. The strands are moldable into fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composite articles.

The relative movement and placement is repeated as often as necessary in order to dispose into the channels a desired thickness of the fibers.

Abstract: A self-contained apparatus for placement of discrete fiber element tows on a mandrel or other tooling. The apparatus carries a spooled fiber element supply, which is directed to a compaction roller over a short, non-convoluted path through a cut/add module having a knife assembly for severing a discrete tow from a continuous fiber element filament, and a drive assembly for feeding the tow and restarting feed of a new tow after severance of the prior one from the filament. The apparatus is particularly suitable for sequentially laying up superimposed, or stacked, tows to define rib-like stiffeners of composite material for reinforcing composite shell structures, and grids of such stiffeners. Methods of using the apparatus are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5989376
Abstract: Disclosed are profiles of fiber-reinforced polymeric plastic and a pultrusion apparatus and method for the manufacture thereof. The apparatus is preferably vertically disposed. As one or more fibers is fed into the apparatus, each fiber is spread and wetted with monomer resin in a bundle spreader, formed in a die, and then subjected in a curing chamber to a source of radiation which initiates polymerization of the monomer, resulting in a fiber-reinforced polymeric plastic exiting from the pultrusion apparatus. Suitably, the radiation is ultraviolet, the monomer resin is methacrylate resin, and the fiber is quartz. The resultant profile is long and thin like a structural steel wire, but typically will have only 1/4 the weight thereof while having a strength comparable thereto. Thus, the profile is useful as an orthodontic wire as a replacement instead of structural steel wires used as orthodontic wires.

Abstract: Substantially constant tension is maintained on a melt-blown nonwoven fibrous sheet by mounting the sheet take-up roller for longitudinal movements relative so as to accommodate the increasing diameter of the sheet material being wound convolutely on the take-up roller. Sheet tension during production is thereby maintained substantially constant by virtue of a continual increase in the longitudinal distance (in relation to the machine direction) between the fiber collection mandrel and the take-up roll. Preferably, tension control is achieved by a pneumatic pressure-regulating system which includes at least one rotatable press roller which is longitudinally fixed in position relative to the collection mandrel and is in contact with the sheet material being wound around the take-up roll. The take-up roller is pneumatically advanced toward the press roller by the pneumatic actuation of at least one air cylinder.

Abstract: The invention is a process and apparatus for forming structural members from layers of uncured composite material. The apparatus comprises a first station having at least one tape dispensing module, a second station where tape layers that have been deposited on a tool are vacuum treated in order to remove air entrapped between layers of the tape, and a track system which enables movement of the tool between the first and second stations as well as a tool storage station. The process of building the structural members comprises dispensing tape from each of the modules at the first station onto a tool, then removing entrapped air from between layers of deposited tape, then dispensing further layers of tape, then removing entrapped air, etc., until the desired tape configuration has been achieved. Until such built-up structural member is cured, it is stored in racks in the tool storage station. A unique "partial ply" module is disclosed for applying tape segments to the side forming surfaces of the tool.
