  • Patent number: 4406721
Abstract: A machine and method for applying heat shrink labels or the like to articles such as containers having cylindrical body portions and an end portion or portions adjoining the body portion and sloping inwardly therefrom. The label has a length such that its leading end overlaps the trailing end and a seam is formed at the overlap. The label is secured to the article by adhesive between the leading end and the container and by adhesive between the overlapping leading end and trailing end. The label is of a width such that it projects beyond the junction or junctions of the end portion or portions with the body portion, resulting in free standing edge or edges which are then heat shrunk onto the container. To provide pressure in forming the seam of the free standing edge or edges, a tongue or tongues are interposed between the article and the intended seam which provide a continuation of the body of the article.

  • Patent number: 4391666
Abstract: An apparatus for fabricating a container made of foam sheet material. The apparatus includes a mandrel carrying drum that revolves about its longitudinal axis of symmetry. The drum contains a plurality of individual mandrels in radial alignment. Each mandrel revolves about its longitudinal axis as it forms a cylindrically shaped container blank. The drum carries the mandrels in an arcuate path, thus permitting work to be performed on the container blank as it passes a series of work stations.A method of forming a container from foam sheet material is set forth wherein a severed sheet material is attached to a mandrel. The mandrel rotates about its axis to form a cylindrically shaped blank as the mandrel itself is being moved in an arcuate path. While positioned on the mandrel, the container blank is worked upon at a plurality of work stations, thus producing a final container with an end closure which may be apertured.

  • Patent number: 4292114
Abstract: Method and apparatus for winding wire on a double flanged spool by means of a single spooler wherein the wire is automatically carried from a feed roller toward the spindle by grasping the free end of an endless wire, guiding the grasped end in an orbital path about a spindle, until a portion remote from the wire is grasped by another means adjacent to the spindle and wire is then caused to be cast from the other grasping means over the end flange of the spool and onto the spool itself. Thereafter the wire is wound about the spool after which, the wire is automatically grasped and cut from the spool by the orbital means so as to restart a new cycle of winding.

  • Patent number: 4240867
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dispensing adhesive-backed foil having a protective covering in contact with the adhesive surface. A spool is mounted on a frame to provide a continuous strip of foil to a guide roller having a circumferential groove for receiving and guiding the strip of foil, the groove being approximately the same width as the width of the foil strip. A peel blade incorporates a peel edge contacting the foil between the pressure-sensitive adhesive surface and the protective covering to force the protective covering out of contact with the adhesive surface; the peel blade is mounted to place the peel edge in contact with the foil strip at the guide roller surface. A workpiece, such as a flat decorative glass configuration, is placed with its edge in contact with the adhesive surface of the foil on the guide roller. A workpiece guide is mounted adjacent the guide roller for contacting the workpiece to maintain the edges of the workpiece centered in the circumferential groove of the guide roller.

  • Patent number: 4203795
Abstract: A machine for transforming heat shrinkable thermoplastic material into sealed and liquid-filled containers in which the material in strip form is cut off to a suitable length then heated and transformed into a tube-shaped shell blank on a mandrel with an overlapped longitudinal heat-sealed seam. The shell is then displaced in relation to the mandrel so that its bottom end extends beyond the end of the mandrel, a base blank cut from another strip is then inserted into the end of the shell to rest against the mandrel end, and the shell and inserted base are then heated causing the shell to shrink accurately to the shape of the mandrel and the bottom edge zone of the heated shell to be folded in against the end of the mandrel and the edge of the base. The joined edge zones of the shell and base are then pressed together and heat sealed. The container is then passed to a filling machine where it is filled and closed by a lid.
