  • Patent number: 5935361
Abstract: An original roll positioning device sets a position of an end face of a new roll at a predetermined reference position. An end pull-out device sucks and pulls out the leading end of the new web from the positioned new roll at a predetermined length. A pair of roll-up chucks of an end roll-up device holds both sides of the leading end of the pulled-out web, and the roll-up chucks are rotated to roll up the leading end of the web at a predetermined length. A suction box sucks the web at a part between the roll up chucks and the roll, and then a cutter cuts the web along the width of the web to form a splicing part. The splicing part is sucked by the suction box, and the spliced part is made to wait in this state until the start of the splicing operation.

  • Patent number: 5693177
Abstract: An apparatus for forming a butt seam between opposed edges of resiliently compressible fabric sheets, such as foamed neoprene for wet suits and dry suits. The apparatus includes fabric manipulating assembly which continuously compresses the sheets proximate and inwardly of the edges, preferably by a roller assembly, to form opposed shoulders or areas that will permit the application of a lateral force to firmly press the opposed edges of the flexible and compressible sheets tightly together during movement and bonding along the seam. The apparatus preferably includes adhesive activation means in the form of an ultrasonic transducer which contacts the neoprene pieces in advance of compression rollers to activate a dry neoprene cement carried on the edges of the fabric pieces. A method for forming the butt seam is described, as are alternatively adhesive activating assemblies and a seamed neoprene fabric sheet.

The tool includes a position control means and first and second clamping mechanisms cooperatively engaged and diametrically opposed along a longitudinal axis. The first clamping mechanism holds a first end section of a belt and the second clamping mechanism holds a second end section of a belt. The position control means repositions the clamping mechanisms relative to one another along the longitudinal axis between a first position where the longitudinal spacing between the clamping mechanisms is minimized, and a second position where the longitudinal spacing between the clamping mechanisms is maximized. The tool retains and aligns both belt ends in an opposed abutting relationship while permitting longitudinal movement of the belt ends relative to one another.

  • Patent number: 5679207
Abstract: A non-alternating lap splicing apparatus for successively splicing rolls of web material is enclosed in a bifurcated housing with a separate access door for each of two compartments therein. There is a driven spindle in each of the compartments, each for supporting a stock roll of web. There is a separate film inlet path for each of the stock rolls. An oscillator assembly having a cutting knife and an ultrasonic horn means is mounted in the housing. The web outlet path is through the oscillator assembly. When one of the rolls is nearly spent, that roll is automatically stopped and the web is cut by the knife to create a trailing end. The oscillator assembly then pivots to align with the film inlet path for the stock roll within the other compartment. The lead end of the new stock roll is automatically positioned under the trailing end of the spent stock roll and the ultrasonic horn bonds the webs together. The overlapping lap of the splice is always trailing and on the same side of the web.

  • Patent number: 5571371
Abstract: A sheet material butt-joining apparatus provides improved joining strength and accuracy between starting and finishing ends (S1, S2) of a sheet material S, by keeping the distance between these ends (S1, S2) of the sheet material (S) at a predetermined value by means of a control pin (63). A motor is continuously operated even after the starting and finishing ends (S3, S4) of the sheet material (S) are held by top and bottom joining pawls (48, 49, 36, 37). In this instance, a cam follower (95) moves in a slot (94) to temporarily stop transfer of a vertically moving force to a vertically movable base (26). On such occasion, the control pin (63) is lowered and retracted from an intermediate position between the starting and finishing ends (S1, S2) of the sheet material (S) to form a gap between these ends (S1, S2). The starting and finishing ends (S3, S4) held by the joining pawls are prevented from deformation or the like.

The invention also permits more durable components. In the method according to the invention, the printing ribbon to be joined is retained in a non-overlapping fashion on movable plates, preferably by means of a vacuum, and is severed by a cutter, preferably by means of an ultrasonic sonotrode and cutting anvil, and is then moved so that the ribbon ends are in overlapping position, and then welded, preferably with a structured part of a sonotrode on a wielding anvil which is likewise structured. A device according to the invention has two plates with ribbon-retaining means, a cutter, and a joiner, such as a welder, for joining the two ribbons ends. The plates are movable to at least two positions suitable respectively for the cutting and joining functions of the machine.

A clamping beam, which functions in an alternating manner with one or the other clasping rollers, includes pressing faces disposed oppositely facing each other, there being one beam for each of the clasping rollers. Each clamping beam has a pressing face for pressing the web which runs across it. Two breaking beams alternatingly cooperate with the upper side of the clamping beam for one or the other clasping roller to bring the terminating web to rest. Two alternatingly functioning knives act to cut off the web which is played out.

Particularly with automatic machines employing hydraulic power, the force applied between the pipe ends and the heater plate and subsequently between the pipe ends needs to include an allowance for the drag factor inherent in the pipeline and compensate for any frictional effect in the mechanical and hydraulic moving components, and which is a difficult calculation.
