  • Patent number: 5169479
Abstract: A wire take-up apparatus for applying wire to a wire spool includes a tape applicator assembly for automatically applying a length of adhesive tape to the outer terminal end portion of the wire applied to a spool in order to prevent the wire from unraveling from the spool. The tape applicator assembly includes a vacuum roller assembly including a vacuum roller element which is operative for releasably retaining a portion of a length of tape on the outer surface thereof so that the adhesive surface of the tape faces outwardly. The vacuum roller assembly is movable to a position wherein the tape on the vacuum roller element thereof contacts the wire on a wire spool to apply the tape to the wire.

  • Patent number: 5055155
Abstract: A method and apparatus for laminating flexible magnetic segments onto the plastic substrates, such as during the in-line production of shower curtains and/or curtain liners. The apparatus, which is configured for use with typical shower curtain and/or shower curtain liner producing machines, includes a substantially planar upper work surface for receiving the plastic substrate and at least one applicator unit located adjacent the work surface which automatically laminates a flexible magnetic strip and a plastic cover patch onto the curtain. Three applicator units are preferably utilized, with one such unit substantially aligned with the center of the curtain and the remaining two units being located along the longitudinal edges thereof. In operation, a thin, flexible plastic film is unwound onto an assembly table whereupon it is stopped at a predetermined position.

Abstract: A compliant tape dispensing and compacting head and method by which tape is dispensed and compacted onto a contoured surface. Tape is dispensed from a plurality of tape supply reels onto the contoured surface and subject to the action of a compacting head. The compacting head is capable of being biased in the compaction direction, i.e., against the contoured surface, and adjusted by the biasing force to follow the contour of the contoured surface so that each discrete tape strip has a compacting force applied thereto which is normal to the contoured surface at the tape strip location.

  • Patent number: 4943338
Abstract: A fiber placement machine has a head for controlling fiber tows running from an upstream supply creel to a downstream work laydown zone, and the head includes a bracket supporting a presser member which impresses and compacts the fiber against a workpiece. The head includes a relatively rigid fiber guide assembly and a drive for moving the fiber guide to an advanced position near the presser member and a retracted position away from the presser member. In the advanced position, fiber tows run uninhibited through channels in the fiber guide. However, when it is desired to cut the fibers, the fiber guide is run to the retracted position, at which point the guide is clamped to the incoming fiber tows. After the exiting cut fiber has been laid down on the workpiece by the presser member, the incoming fibers may be restarted by driving the fiber guide and its clamped fiber tow to an advanced position where the fiber tow end may be grabbed in the nip formed between the presser member and the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4828646
Abstract: In a factory for producing rolls of pressure sensitive tape, a tab is applied to the end of such tape by a series of steps comprising: advancing a strip of tab material onto a work station; positioning a placement zone of such tape onto a temporary positioning zone of a workstation and onto the perpendicularly aligned strip of tab material so that the tape adheres to such strip of tab material; cutting off and discarding that segment of the tape forward of the edge of the tab; lifting the tape from its temporary positioning zone at the rearward portion of said workstation; advancing the combination of the strip of tab material and the tape laminated thereto so that on the workstation there is exposed the strip of material for the next tape; and cutting off the strip of tab material at the edge of the tape, so that the tabbed tape is liberated from the workstation zone. Such process can be practiced using either a hand held applicator or a bench mounted applicator.

  • Patent number: 4699683
Abstract: A fiber laminator for simultaneously laying down a strip of parallel, flat fiber rovings is disclosed. A head (53) for dispensing the rovings to be laid down is supported by a gantry (51). The gantry (51) includes mechanisms for moving the dispensing head longitudinally along three orthogonal axes (X, Y, Z) and rotationally about a vertical axis(c). Further, the dispensing head is designed for rotational movement about a horizontal axis(a). Thus, the dispensing head is movable along a complex path-of-travel as the fiber rovings are laid down. Each fiber roving is supplied by a spool (30) mounted on one side of the head. After leaving the spools (301), the fiber rovings pass through nip rollers (305) that apply a slight pressure to the already flat rovings to remove any remaining thickness irregularities. Thereafter, the rovings are directed to individual modules each of which includes a separately controlled rethreading mechanism (713) and a separate shear mechanism (741).

  • Patent number: 4640731
Abstract: Apparatus for applying tape to a forwardly traveling carton includes a first projecting tape applicator which lies in the path of carton travel. As the carton strikes the first applicator, tape is applied to the carton front panel, the traveling carton depressing the applicator to allow it to apply and wipe tape around the corner formed by the front panel and onto a horizontal panel. A push finger carried on the tape applicator engages for a time with a tape cutter. On engagement of the push finger with a cam near completion of unit depression travel, the finger disengages the cutter and releases it to sever a tape length from the tape supply. A roller in the depressed applicator unit wipes the severed tape length along the horizontal panel for the length that the tape extends along the panel. A second tape applicator unit which moves from projecting to depressed position in tandem with the first unit is located downstream of the first applicator.
