Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for assembling veneer strips by applying adhesive threads to the upper and lower surfaces of the strips of veneer, by means of a plurality of thread supplying and alternating devices located in spaced juxtaposition. The invention is characterized in that each thread supplying and alternating device comprises two circular segment bodies which are rotatably mounted on a frame of the apparatus. The circular segment bodies are adapted to be driven by a common driving device, and on each circular segment body a thread guide is located. The circular segment bodies are so arranged and formed that an adjustable free passage for the workpiece to be treated is provided.
Abstract: Improved welds for thermoplastic foam insulation spirally deposited about a structure are obtained employing a thin, resistance heated welding blade which beneficially is positioned by means of a four-bar linkage connecting the blade to the blade support.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for forming a novel corrugated paperboard web of indefinite length, which web includes a planar facer layer and a corrugated layer the flutes of which extend longitudinally the length of the web. The web is formed by splicing together sections having offset planar facer and corrugated layers of generally equal dimensions, respectively, whereby at one end the facer layer projects beyond the corrugated layer and at the other end the corrugated layer projects beyond the facer layer, the flutes of the corrugated layer extending from one projecting end to the other. Successive sections are spliced together with the projecting facer layer portion of one section overlying the projecting corrugated portion and the facing layer of another section, preferably with the adjacent portions of the corrugated layers of the two sections being in flute-enmeshing engagement.
Abstract: For joining pieces of rubberized tire cords or like sheet material end to end, a pair of coplanar tables are provided which have edges disposed opposite to each other in exact parallelism. Each table is equipped with a retractable stop for positioning a piece of sheet material thereon with its end projecting a predetermined distance beyond the said table edge, and a clamp for temporarily securing the sheet material in position on the table. As one of the tables is then moved toward the other, the pieces of sheet material have their opposed ends preliminarily joined together. The apparatus further comprises at least one finishing roller supported above the tables for rolling the preliminarily formed joint of the sheet material, which roller is in the form of a coil of wire effective both to smooth and to strengthen the joint.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for making sheets from reinforced elastomeric ribbon. The apparatus has a lead-in mechanism on which the ribbon is received for preliminary orientation. The apparatus also employs a transfer mechanism that incorporates a shuttle head which is supported by a primary carrier disposed over the assembly mechanism. The shuttle head is capable of being protracted from its normal position over the assembly mechanism to a position over the lead-in mechanism where it is also engaged by a stabilizing carrier which assures precise orientation of the shuttle head during its operative movements with respect to the lead-in mechanism. So stabilized the shuttle head: engages and grasps the ribbon presented by the lead-in mechanism; raises the ribbon off the lead-in mechanism; retracts to position the ribbon above the assembly mechanism; and, accurately deposits the ribbon on the assembly mechanism.

Abstract: A long plastic film roll is manufactured in situ for covering an agricultural, athletic or other field. A plurality of short plastic film rolls are supported on drivable rollers, which in turn are mounted on a plurality of spaced trucks extending along the width of the field. The axes of the film rolls are parallel, but alternate rolls are staggered with every other roll being disposed either forwardly or rearwardly of the adjacent rolls. The roll ends overlap and, as the trucks move longitudinally down the field to lay down the film, the overlapping edges of the film are sealingly joined together as they leave their respective rolls and just before being laid down.
Abstract: Apparatus for laminating film strips to a transport web, the laminating apparatus adaptable to handle film strips of different sizes having different perforation formats. The laminating apparatus comprises a module for positioning a film strip of a particular film size with respect to the transport web. The film strip and the transport web are then advanced through a laminating station where they are laminated together with a tape. The laminating apparatus is designed to interchangeably receive the positioning module. Thus, film strips of different film sizes may be laminated using the disclosed laminating apparatus by interchanging the positioning module to suit the particular film size to be laminated.
Abstract: Apparatus for forming a swimming pool cover or similar article having relatively large transverse dimensions by joining a plurality of elongated pieces of heat sealable material together is disclosed. The apparatus includes a working bed, and means for dispensing first and second pieces of heat sealable material onto the bed so that a marginal portion of the first piece is exposed. The apparatus folds the exposed marginal portion of the first piece over a corresponding marginal portion of the second piece, and the marginal portions are heat sealed together to form a single wider piece of material. The wider piece of material is drawn from the bed and stacked and then returned to the dispensing means for adding another elongate piece to the width of the material, eventually forming a piece of material sufficient to cover the entire pool.
Abstract: A splicer for a heat cohering belt has a base supporting a lower platen frame. A heated lower platen is vertically liftable in the lower platen frame by means of an expansible envelope therebetween. An upper platen frame on the base supports a heated upper platen for movement toward and away from the lower platen. A rotatable cam on the base is effective to lift the upper platen, and a bail on the base is effective to hold the upper platen against lifting above a chosen point. Both platens are centrally supported for expansion in two directions away therefrom, and the lower platen is made flexible by a number of transverse gaps therein.
Abstract: This invention relates to butt welding sheets of thermoplastic material. More specifically, this invention relates to an apparatus and a process for performing this operation in an improved manner by controlling the temperature of the means used to heat and cut sections of the thermoplastic material. The apparatus and process of this invention concerns switching means response to the length of the cutting means (the length being proportional to the temperature of the cutting means) which controls a power source used to pass current through the cutting means. The current produces heat due to the electrical resistance of the cutting means whenever the cutting means shortens due to a decrease in temperature. An increase of a predetermined amount in length of the cutting means, due to a proportional temperature increase, deactivates the heating circuit.
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for manufacturing stock material from which bags or other containers may be formed is disclosed. A folded plastic film is fed from a stock roll onto a plurality of carrier rollers which support the film in a horizontal position. Simultaneously, a separate closure strip is fed from a second stock roll through a guide block which aligns the strip with a sealing station, the two halves of the closure strip being pressed together to maintain proper alignment. The upper ply of the folded plastic film is fed into the heat sealing apparatus at the sealing station, the edge of the upper ply being aligned with one edge of the closure, and the film and the closure strip are fed continuously through the sealing station where they are welded together. The lower ply of the film web is folded downwardly so that it bypasses the sealing station.
Abstract: A tabbed film strip comprising a film portion and a tab portion secured together in parallel adjacent edge relation by a connecting tape overlapping the film and tab portion and adhesively secured thereto in an arrangement leaving a major area of the film portion and tab portion uncovered throughout their lengths. Apparatus to form this product and to carry out a process of making it comprises a housing which supports individual feed supplies for the film portion and the tab portion and which also supports a feed supply for the connecting tape. The tape has pressure sensitive adhesive on one of its surfaces for securement to the film and tab portions. Forming mechanism is supported on the housing and has guide grooves therein as well as guide rollers and a hold-down arm associated therewith arranged to place the film portion and tab portion in parallel adjacent edge relation and to secure these two portions together by means of the tape.
