  • Patent number: 8820378
Abstract: An apparatus and method for producing a coated analytic substrate using a compact and portable automated instrument located in the laboratory setting at the point of use which can consistently produce one or a plurality of coated analytic substrates “on demand” for using the analytic substrate immediately after coating, preferably without a step of rinsing the coated analytic substrate before use. The apparatus preferably uses applicator cartridges having a reservoir containing the coating compositions used to form the coatings. Preferably the cartridges are removable and interchangeable to facilitate the production of individual analytic substrates having different coatings or different coating patterns. These coated analytic substrates have superior specimen adhesion characteristics due to the improved quality of the coatings applied by the coating apparatus and due to the quickness with which the coated analytic substrates can be used in the lab after production.

Abstract: Adhesives and primer compositions that include water, a polymer and a pH indicator. The adhesives and primers have a visually-detectable color when wet, and preferably dry to a clear or transparent film, while having good flow and spreadability. The adhesives and primers provide a visual indication of wetness by including a pH indicator such that when the composition is wet, the pH indicator is colored such that the color and the intensity of the color provides a visual indication of wetness; sufficiency of thickness; and uniformity of application of the adhesive or primer.

  • Patent number: 6874965
Abstract: A drywall finishing head is provided for applying mastic material over a tape joint between adjacent wallboard surfaces. The finishing head includes a coater connected to a pneumatic applicator for delivering the mastic material. A wiper blade extends across the length of the coater with a cover underlying the wiper blade and a backer bar overlying the wiper blade. A cam assembly is rotatably mounted on a tensioning portion of the coater. Adjustment of the cam assembly is constructed and arranged to change the force of the backer boar so that a proper crown or profile of mastic material can be delivered to the tape joint through a gap between the cover and the wiper blade.

  • Patent number: 6871013
Abstract: A portable, handheld seam welding gun for filling in seams between sheets of linoleum flooring is provided with a unique heat nozzle. The heat nozzle of the invention couples the heating barrel of a conventional floor seam welding gun to a conventional hollow welding tip by receiving the heating air inlet tube of the tip within the confines of a downstream socket formed in the body of the heat nozzle. A larger, upstream socket formed in the body of the heat nozzle fits onto the heating barrel of the handheld, portable welding gun. A plurality of preheating jets are formed on the underside of the body of the heat nozzle to preheat the region of the channel immediately to the rear of the welding tip just before molten sealant flows into that portion of the channel.

Abstract: A portable tool is disclosed that is useful for working architectural elements such as masticized tape. The tool features a tool body that forms a regular polygon having at least 6 planar surfaces. The planar surfaces of the tool body promote handling of the tool and are useful for directing and manipulating the work of the tool. The planar surfaces may also comprise protrusions, depressions, or other markings in aid of directing the work of the tool. The tool also comprises a head apparatus for applying and dispensing masticized tape. The tool body may comprise a container for storing and dispensing mastic. The tool further comprises a tapered universal fill nozzle having a plurality of diameters that will accommodate remote charging of the tool from mechanisms provided by a variety of manufacturers. Although the body of the tool is usually made of corrosion resistant metal, it may also be made of a polymer, a carbon composite, or combination thereof.

  • Patent number: 6752895
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for imparting a smooth surface to gypsum fiber panels. The method involves imparting energy to the surface of a slurry as the slurry is dewatered just prior to rehydration. The apparatus used to impart the energy is a water spray including a source of pressurized water such as a pump, a distribution manifold and a plurality of nozzles to direct the water spray at the surface of the slurry. In operation, the water spray is directed against the surface of the slurry. The flow disrupts the slurry to a fraction of its total depth, thus dispersing clumps or flocs of commingled crystals and fibers in the depth that would give the surface of the finished panel a rough surface if they were allowed to remain.

Abstract: A dispensing tool will mix and dispense viscous material having first and second parts or constituents. The tool has a handheld elongated tube with a nozzle on one end. A blender is located adjacent the nozzle. The first constituent is located within a chamber in the tube. The second constituent is located in a reservoir mounted to the tube. The blender has an inlet receiving first and second constituents and a rotary member for mixing the constituents and delivering them through an outlet to the nozzle. A piston driven by a wheel delivers the first constituent to the blender. The wheel rotates when the nozzle end of the tube is advanced along an application surface, causing the piston to move and the blender to rotate. A pump, also driven by the wheel, supplies a second constituent from the reservoir to the blender.

A flexible strap is mounted to the side of the housing to provide a loop for insertion of a hand of a user to carry the dispenser. In a manual mode, a single lever controls flow of compound from a pump to the compound channel as well as severing the tape at the end of the stroke. The lever has an off position that shuts off flow of compound to the compound channel. It has an on position that allows flow of compound to the compound channel. It has a cutting position that actuates a cutting mechanism to cut the tape and simultaneously to shut off flow of compound to the compound channel.

Abstract: A tape and compound dispenser for wall surfaces automatically matches the delivery of the compound to the feed of the tape. The system has a compartment or tank that contains compound. A pump supplies compound from the tank through a flexible conduit to an applicator, which dispenses tape and compound. A sensor measures the rate of speed of the tape as it is being dispensed and provides a signal to a controller. The controller will vary the flow rate by varying the speed of the motor that drives the pump. An auger is rotated within the tank for prefeeding compound to the pump as well as for mixing compound.
