Abstract: A welding device comprising a body having a cylindrical portion and an integral gripping portion extending away from the cylindrical portion. A welding head is provided at one end of the cylindrical portion. The welding head is angularly displaceable relative to the cylindrical portion about the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical portion and supports an ultrasonic transducer and an anvil co-operable with the transducer. The transducer and anvil are relatively movable towards one another to pinch an object to be welded therebetween. A pulling device operable by a trigger is provided for pulling the transducer and the anvil towards one another and a battery pack is releasably attached to the gripping portion.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a filter comprises the steps of assembling multiple layers of filtration material on top of one another to form an assembly; holding the assembly between an ultrasonic weld horn and a weld nest so that the assembly has a marginal area outside of an edge formed on either the nest or the weld horn; and operating the weld horn so as to cause the marginal area to be cut off from the assembly at the edge and to simultaneously seal together the layers of filtration material of the remaining assembly at the edge. A filter made by the process and an apparatus used to practice the process are also disclosed.

Abstract: A sealing apparatus includes an anvil of a sealing abutment surface, which is driven to circulate with a constant peripheral velocity, and an ultrasonic horn of a sealing abutment surface, which is driven to reciprocate with varying velocities. Since the relative velocity of a soft workpiece moving along with the anvil against the sealing abutment surface of the ultrasonic horn can be made low, a sealing energy from the ultrasonic horn may be applied to the soft workpiece sufficiently long.

  • Patent number: 7056417
Abstract: A method of manufacture involves the following steps: extruding a first zipper strip comprising a first zipper flange and a first closure profile; extruding a second zipper strip comprising a second zipper flange and a second closure profile that is interlockable with the first closure profile; interlocking the first and second closure profiles; and welding the first and second zipper flanges together in a first zone and welding the first and second closure profiles together in a second zone by applying energy to both zones in one operation or in separate operations. A generally T-shaped zone of fusion is formed. The second zone forms the top of the T shape, while the first zone forms the stem of the T shape. The first zone forms respective flange seals, while the second zone forms either back-to-back preseals or back-to-back slider end stops when the zipper is cut, depending on whether the zipper is sliderless or slider-actuated.

  • Patent number: 7033451
Abstract: An ultrasonic welding assembly comprising a horn, an anvil and an anvil cover. The horn comprises a generally T-shaped flattening surface and a rail projecting forward of the flattening surface. The rail is shaped to serve as a dam for flowing thermoplastic zipper material during stomping of slider end stops. The horn further comprises a plurality of vertical energy directors designed to direct ultrasonic energy into the mass of zipper material and deflect flowing zipper material toward the dam. The horn further comprises first and second recesses located on opposite sides of a stem of the T-shaped flattening surface. The anvil cover overlies opposing portions of the anvil and comprises a T-shaped cutout. The T-shaped flattening surface of the horn fits in the T-shaped cutout of the anvil cover. The resulting zipper has slider end stops located at opposing ends.

  • Patent number: 7025841
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for ultrasonically welding plastic parts together. The ultrasonic welding apparatus includes: an air cylinder having a piston rod; an ultrasonic horn substantially rigidly coupled to an end of the piston rod and having a distal end; a rotary anvil having an axis of rotation generally perpendicular to an axis of the piston rod and comprising a periphery; a transducer for converting electric potential differences into ultrasound wave energy, the horn being acoustically coupled to the transducer; and drive means for causing the anvil to rotate. The distal end of the horn confronts the periphery of the anvil throughout rotation of the anvil. On one application, interlocked zipper strips are passed through a gap between the distal end of the horn and the periphery of the anvil. The anvil periphery has a plateau that presses the zipper against the distal end of the horn. The transducer is energized in synchronism with the plateau being opposed to the distal end of the horn.

  • Patent number: 7017791
Abstract: In an ultrasonic bonding method that bonds a material to a bonding surface by the application of ultrasonic vibration, both side faces of the material in the direction of ultrasonic vibration are clamped by an application member that applies a predetermined ultrasonic vibration, and by a clamping member. The clamping member is synchronously vibrated by ultrasonic vibration transmitted through the material from the application member, and the material is bonded to the bonding surface while being pressed against the application member and against the bonding surface. In this method, high bonding quality can be achieved by efficiently transmitting ultrasonic vibration from the application member to a material to be bonded, and the material can be prevented from tilting, cracking, chipping, or the like without being subjected to a special working operation, for example, forming of a chamfered portion.

Abstract: A method produces a connection interface in a tubular filter element for filtering liquids, including a filter mat (10). The opposite ends (14) of the filter mat are interconnected in a connection position by a planar weld seam (28) provided with an embossed strip in the region of the free ends (14) of the filter mat. A region is provided between the embossed weld seam (30) and the beginning of the transition towards the tubular filter mats, in which a smooth weld seam (32) is applied without embossing in a flat strip along the ends (14) of the filter mat. This arrangement enables the ends of the filter mat to be welded together in a strong and long-lasting manner. The embossed weld seam is simultaneously unloaded of any stress by the smooth weld seam.
