Patent number: 6155322Abstract: By providing a system for contacting a label and controllably moving the label into direct, secure, adhesive engagement with a container and its flange member, a dependable, effective, and reliable label applying apparatus and label application method is realized which securely affixes a label in its entirety to a product container on a continuous production basis, totally eliminating unwanted tenting of labels. By employing the present invention, a product holding container, having a forwardly protruding lip or flange, is advanced towards a label dispensing zone with the label positioned for contacting the leading-edge of the forwardly protruding flange.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 1998Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Inline Plastics Corp.Inventors: Daniel A. Patent number: 6042930Abstract: A multilayer film useful for making plastic adhesive labels for glass substrates such as glass bottles. The multilayer films contain a base layer, an adhesive layer, and optionally an intermediate layer to improve interlayer bonding between the base layer and the adhesive layer. The adhesive layer comprises a heat-activated thermoplastic adhesive that is not tacky at room temperature. Films of the present invention are sufficiently non blocking at room temperature so as to not require the use of a separate release liner. The film can be utilized in conventional graphics printing operations and made into labels. Labels made from films of the present invention can be thermally adhered to glass substrates and exhibit sufficient adhesion to glass substrates to withstand washing/rinsing, filling, and pasteurization processes utilized in the bottling industry.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1997Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: Robert H. Patent number: 5129976Abstract: A method of adhering a decorative paper to a cubic structure such as a box. A double-face adhesive sheet is prepared to have an upper and lower release papers, and the lower release paper is entirely peeled off to adhere thereto a decorative paper. A cut is formed on the upper release paper to form a desired shape of non-adhesive portion and surrounding adhesive portion. The upper release sheet at the surrounding adhesive portion is peeled off and the cubic structure is positioned on the non-adhesive portions. Then, the adhesive portion is bent inside of the cubic structure and adhered to the interior of the cubic structure.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1991Date of Patent: July 14, 1992Assignee: Sakura Hobby Craft Co., Ltd.Inventor: Yataro Horikiri

Patent number: 4338155Abstract: A method and apparatus for properly positioning multi-faced containers to facilitate the proper application of labels. This invention, used in conjunction with labeling machines having star-wheel feed mechanisms, facilitates the proper indexing of multi-faced containers to insure that labels are applied consistently in the proper position. This invention may be used with multi-faced containers having any number of flat sides.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 1980Date of Patent: July 6, 1982Assignee: H. J. Heinz CompanyInventor: Byron D. Patent number: 4329191Abstract: A process for labelling a system of file folders comprises printing a label for the system, where each printed label is different from other printed labels for the system. Each label has a field in which a set of indicia is printed, where the indicia are both machine and visually readable. The printed indicia is machine read for directing a labeler's application to a file folder flap of individual color coded labels. Each color coded label, as applied, has an indicium corresponding to one of the machine read indicium.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1980Date of Patent: May 11, 1982Assignee: Datafile LimitedInventor: Donald T. Patent number: 4240848Abstract: Alphabetic labelling of articles includes the use of a label having on a portion of its face a first set of indicia and on another portion of its face a second set of indicia which relate to the same subject matter as the first set. The second set of indicia is oriented in reverse and upside down relative to the first set. A machine readable code unique to the subject matter of the sets of indicia is located on one of the face portions of the label. The label when folded about its length isolates the two fields and on application to an article, provides visual identification of the article from two of its sides. The label may be provided with a machine readable indicia code which is representative of at least one indicium of either of the sets. An article labelling system may be adapted to read the indicia code and apply as controlled by the reading operation, one or more labels having letters corresponding to the coded indicia.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1978Date of Patent: December 23, 1980Assignee: Datafile LimitedInventor: Donald T. Patent number: 4009070Abstract: A device for labelling objects, notably cassettes, on two sides. The device is provided with two magazines for labels and a device co-operating therewith for removing and transporting the labels to stations in the device which are adapted to receive the objects to be labelled. At least one feeding device for the objects to be labelled is provided to feed the objects to a track along which they can be moved to the said stations. At the area of the said stations the track is provided with positioning means for the objects. Between these two stations a turnover device is provided which comprises a completely or partly closed window which is arranged to transverse to the track. This window has an inner circumference which at least substantially corresponds to the outer circumference of the objects in a direction transverse to the track, and is situated in the track such that the objects can slide through the window during their movement over the track.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1975Date of Patent: February 22, 1977Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventor: Rene Maurice Linmans

Patent number: 3954543Abstract: Apparatus for applying labels bearing a pressure-sensitive adhesive to articles wherein each article is moved by a first pair of conveyor belts into engagement with a second pair of conveyor belts. The first and second pair of conveyor belts hold and move the articles. As the articles are moved, each article passes a sensor, such as an electric eye, which actuates label feeding means, thereby causing a label to be moved into the path of travel of the article. The leading edge of the moving article engages the label between the label ends and moves the label against a pair of spaced rollers. As the article is moved through the space between the rollers, the rollers press the leading end of the label and the center of the label against the bottom and top surface of the article, respectively.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1972Date of Patent: May 4, 1976Inventor: Edwin E.
