A bumper base is mounted between the bumper head and a vehicle body surface at a rearward end of a door track and has a hinge face for contacting a door hinge to prevent door rearward longitudinal movement when the door is moved to a fully open position. A bolt threaded on both ends is attached on a first end to the bumper head to allow lateral adjustment with respect to the bumper base, and passes through the bumper base for attachment on a second end to a vehicle body portion.

The mechanism includes first and second housings and plural retarding discs compressed between the housings. In the improvement, a resilient member is interposed between the first housing and the discs. And most preferably, a separate resilient member is interposed between each housing, respectively, and the discs. The thickness of each resilient member is selected in view of the aggregate thickness of the discs and the number of resilient members if more than one such member is used. A highly preferred resilient member is an elastomeric washer. The new retarding mechanism substantially extends the time period between mechanism adjustments and results in improved machine productivity.

The door lock limits the amount of rotation of the door about the hinge and thus prevents entry through the doorway when the door is closed and the lock is attached to the hinge. The door lock may be adjusted so as to conform to various door and door frame configurations as well as to permit limited opening of the door.

A block of elastic material is mounted in a space between the track and the leaf to yieldably support the leaf against the flexure by the follower member during the back and forth movement of the door. The elasticity of the block of elastic material may vary along its length and determines the extent to which the movement of the door is impeded by the engagement of the follower member with the leaf.
