    Abstract: A multi-layered paper web that has increased strength for minimizing slough and lint is provided. In one embodiment, the paper web contains an outer layer formed from unrefined hardwood fibers and an inner layer formed from refined hardwood, softwood, and machine broke fibers. During formation within a headbox, the outer and inner fibrous layers are allowed to partially blend. By partially blending the layers, the fibers within each layer can form bonds in the −z direction to provide sufficient strength to minimize lint and slough.

    Abstract: A product and process of making an absorbent paper article such as paper products, towels, napkins and the like is disclosed. In the invention, one may supply a single furnish, or slurry, of cellulose fibers. Then, it is possible to separate or fractionate the slurry into at least two portions based upon fiber length in the slurry. Fines are employed in the process of manufacturing the products, and fines are specifically incorporated into an inner layer of the final paper products. Fines, short fibers, and/or fibrils are used in the process so they may contribute in a positive manner to the final paper product, rather than acting in a negative manner as a chemical “sponge” or waste material. This use of fines in the inner layers of the product reduces the manufacturing cost and waste produced in the process. A soft paper product with good strength characteristics results from the process.

    Abstract: Processes for manufacturing a paper product from cellulose pulp, part of which comes from a broke and part of which comes from a fresh pulp are provided. The processes involve first redissolving in a broke pulper, with stirring and in an alkaline medium, cellulose fibers contained in said broke to form a broke pulp. Next, the broke pulp is brought to a concentration and a pH close to that characteristic of the fresh pulp by (1) diluting said broke pulp with a white water and (2) acidifying said broke pulp by injecting carbon dioxide into said broke pulp after the broke pulp has left the broke pulper and before admixing said broke pulp with said fresh pulp. Then the broke pulp is admixed with the fresh pulp to form a pulp mixture and the pulp mixture is dewatered to form a paper product and a white water.

    Abstract: A process for making absorbent sheet includes: (a) depositing an aqueous furnish of cellulosic fiber on a forming fabric; (b) dewatering the wet web to a consistency of from about 15 to about 40 percent; (c) transferring the dewatered web from the forming fabric to another fabric traveling at a speed of from about 10 to about 80 percent slower than the forming fabric; (d) wet-shaping the web on an impression fabric whereby the web is macroscopically rearranged to conform to the surface of the impression fabric; and (e) impingement air drying the web. The process is particularly suitable for making high bulk products form difficult to process furnishes such as recycle furnishes and for making high basis weight products without compressive dewatering with a papermaking felt.

    Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for producing a base paper for fine papers, the base paper being produced from a mixture of a mechanical pulp and a chemical pulp. The chemical pulp used comprises a chemical softwood pulp having a elastic modulus close to that of the mechanical pulp and a great bonding strength. It is preferred to use a chemical softwood pulp which produces a sheet having a elastic modulus of less than 6000 N/mm2 when the bonding strength is 400 J/m2. A pulp of this kind has a good ScottBond strength at the same light scattering. The base paper produced by the method can therefore be used in double-coated fine papers which require a large bonding strength of the base paper.

    Abstract: The invention concerns a method for producing a paper web. According to the method a stock is produced from the fibrous raw material and the stock is formed to a web which is dried on a paper machine. According to the invention the stock is formed from a mechanical pulp prepared from wood material of the Populus family and from bleached chemical spruce pulp, whereby the amount of the mechanical pulp is 20 to 70 weight-% and the amount of the bleached chemical softwood pulp is 80 to 30 weight-% of the dry matter of the stock. It is preferred to use an aspen pulp, over 70% of the fiber fractions of which comprise fiber fractions +100, +200 and −200, and the proportion of the −200 fraction is 45% or less. A coated fine paper can be produced from the paper web whose properties are better than those of a traditional fine paper having the corresponding bulk and grammage, on the same capacity level the paper produced by the invention will give a yield gain of up to more than 20%.

The pulp can be molded into a biodegradable package that can be utilized as a delivery vehicle to a site having nutrient-enrichable soil, where the package can be used as a soil amendment after being used as a delivery vehicle. The pulp can also be made into a paper product that is biodegradable and has the characteristic of enhancing soil quality.
