Publication number: 20030000669Abstract: Disclosed is a system that adjusts the operational parameters of a fiber filter apparatus to keep measured properties indicative of paper quality, such as the paper's porosity, within desired value ranges. A feedback loop may be set up in which input properties are read, such as the paper's porosity and the pollution content of the filtrate leaving the fiber filter. These inputs go into a predictive model that determines how to adjust the fiber filter's operational parameters in order to move the measured paper quality properties into their desired value ranges while accommodating other constraints on the fiber filter's operation. The model looks at positive and negative correlations between the operational parameters and the measured inputs. Having processed the inputs and predicted an outcome, the predictive model directs controllers to change the operational parameters of the fiber filter. The input properties are again read, and the feedback loop is repeated.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 29, 2002Publication date: January 2, 2003Applicant: Invensys Systems, Inc.Inventors: William C. Patent number: 6440270Abstract: In controlling the dryer section of a paper machine, the basis weight and moisture of the paper web, the energy fed into the drying cylinders of the dryer section and the machine speed are measured, and then the surface temperature of the drying cylinders is predicted on the basis of the measured values. At the same time, the actual surface temperature of the dryer cylinders is also measured, and if the measured value deviates from the predicted value, any defects in the drying apparatus can be detected quickly. In another aspect, a determination is made of the normal correlation between the power consumption of the drive motors of the cylinders in the drying apparatus and the machine speed. These variables are also measured, and if the correlation of the variables is deviant, it can be concluded that there is a failure in the drying apparatus. In that case it is possible to identify the dryer cylinder where the failure is by measuring the temperature of the cylinders.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1999Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Metso Paper Automation OyInventor: Ali Haapanen

Patent number: 6179964Abstract: The invention relates to a closed-loop control device and a method for the control of the cross-machine and/or machine direction profile of at least one quality feature in the paper manufacturing process with the aid of two sensors. The first sensor picks up a first measured signal of the cross-machine and/or machine direction profile of a first quality feature of the paper web produced. A second sensor picks up a further measured signal. The further sensor is suitable for picking up a quality feature that differs from that picked up by the first sensor, or measures the first quality feature. One or both sensors traverse the web separately. The sensors act through a controller on actuators leading to the feed line or lines for the suspension leading to the flowbox of the machine for controlling thereby the first quality feature of the process.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1997Date of Patent: January 30, 2001Assignee: Voith Sulzer Papiermaschinen GmbHInventors: Ulrich Begemann, Rudolf M{umlaut over (u)}nch

Patent number: 6168687Abstract: Significant improvements in papermaking control can be achieved by employing an array of sensors that are positioned underneath the wire of the machine to measure the conductivity of the aqueous wet stock. The conductivity of the wet stock is directly proportional to the total water weight within the wet stock; consequently, the sensor provides information which can be used to monitor and control the quality of the paper sheet produced. Because CD water weight profile is obtained practically instantaneously, the MD and CD variations are essentially decoupled. Quality improvements to the sheet fabricated will be achieved by providing fast control of the actuators on the machine and by tuning components on the machine to eliminate the sources of variations.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 1998Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Honeywell-Measurex CorporationInventors: Hung-Tzaw Hu, Lee Chase, John Goss, John Preston

Patent number: 6149770Abstract: A system and method of providing on-line turbulence measurements in a sheetmaking machine and using these measurements to perform on-line adjustments to turbulence-inducing and adjusting elements in the sheetmaking machine to optimize final sheet product quality. Turbulence measurements are obtained using water weight sensors in the wet-end of the sheetmaking machine and specifically under wire water weight measurements. Water weight readings are correlated to turbulence intensity levels by correlating ranges of water weights to intensity level intervals. A turbulence processing sensor sorts accumulated water weight measurement readings into intensity level intervals to obtain turbulence measurements or a turbulence profile. The turbulence measurements or profile is provided to a machine element controller which uses the measured turbulence information and target turbulence information to generate control signals.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1998Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Honeywell-Measurex CorporationInventors: Hung-Tzaw Hu, Claud Hagart-Alexander, Lee Chase, John D. Patent number: 6086718Abstract: An apparatus for improving retention of filler in papermaking systems includes a split stream feed to either the head box or fan pump of a papermaking system. The split stream divides the pulp flow into two streams, one stream having a retention aid and filler added thereto. The retention aid and filler-containing stream is then added back to the other stream upstream of the fan pump or head box. Treating only a portion of the overall pulp flow with the filler/retention aid lowers retention aid consumption, improves paper product appearance and maintains or increases filler retention during papermaking.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1998Date of Patent: July 11, 2000Assignee: J.M.
