Abstract: A paper or board web is manufactured in an on-line manufacturing process, in which the web is passed from a paper or board machine (15) directly to a finishing device/finishing devices (60, 50, 10). The state of the finishing device/finishing devices (60, 50, 10) is monitored and, during a shutdown of a finishing device (60; 50; 10), said finishing device is bypassed, the web coming from the paper or board machine (15) is wound into machine reels and/or treated by means of some finishing device/finishing devices and wound into machine reels. Abstract: Method and apparatus for measuring, monitoring and/or providing an indication of material “damage” in board products, particularly Machine Direction (MD) Shear. In this regard, the present document discloses applying a predetermined force to a board product such that the board product is not deflected beyond its elastic region. The apparatus used for applying the force is preferably of a size or structure suitable for physically limiting the amount of deflection of the board product. By maintaining the board product within its elastic region as such, the occurrence of permanent damage to the board product is reduced. Hence, the disclosed method and apparatus are able to provide a non-destructive indication of MD Shear on the paperboard product being tested, and are thus suitable for use in on-line testing/monitoring of paperboard production.

Abstract: A system for maintaining calender rolls of a paper machine clean when producing high-gloss paper or coated paper, such as LWC or MWC. To prevent a coating agent, such as coating dye, from adhering onto and soiling a smooth surface of a calender roll, with an overheating phenomenon, the system has a second measurement station (10) provided with measuring and indicator means for producing an output indicating soiledness of the web (W) or a humidity profile. When the output of the second measurement station (10) indicates excessive soiledness or an uneven humidity profile, the system performs at least one of: cleaning the surface of the smooth-surfaced calender roll; changing the nip load in the calender (5); making a correction adjustment of the CD-directional humidity profile of the web (W); cutting the web (W) and conducting it into the pulper; and/or changing the running speed of the web (W).

  • Patent number: 6579418
Abstract: Pressurized web treatment systems include a moving web that passes through a pressurized treatment chamber having a sealing assembly with a leakage control system. Leakage control is achieved by the cooperative effect of localized leak detectors and leak reduction means that applies a local sealing force on the seal assembly responsive to a signal from the leak detectors such that increased sealing occurs in the vicinity of the leak. In particular, an air press for paper web dewatering has improved efficiency by virtue of the leakage control system, which features local leak detectors and local force generation means associated with a flexible seal assembly to reduce leakage at the edges of the stationary plenum of the air press. Local leak detection can be based on sonic measurement with microphones, detection of escaping tracer gas, optical signals, and other means.

Abstract: System and method for oxidizing contaminants to alter specific properties, such as tack, of contaminants. The present invention reduces the tack of the stickies and pitch by exposing the materials for a short duration to low-energy pulsed electrical discharges between a pair of electrodes that are submerged in a liquid medium, such as a fiber stream, water, a pulp slurry, or whitewater. An electrical discharge in the liquid medium oxidizes materials, which may be dissolved or suspended therein, such as stickies, pitch, sulfide, ink, toner, and other substances, thereby reducing tack, odor, and/or zeta potential, as well as producing other desirable effect.

Abstract: An improved measuring system used with a process control system provides substantially real time correction of aliasing effects in a system having moving equipment that exhibits periodic parameters while being monitored. The measuring/control system can be used with a rotating equipment process line, such as used in a paper mill, in which a measurement scanner travels in the cross direction of a moving web of material, while that same moving web of material continues to move in a longitudinal direction (the machine direction) transverse to the cross direction. The measuring/control system begins by acquiring data utilizing a time synchronous monitoring system that produces a count matrix and a measurement matrix of readings from the measurement scanner. After a sufficient number of data samples have been acquired, a correction matrix can be built.

In another aspect, a determination is made of the normal correlation between the power consumption of the drive motors of the cylinders in the drying apparatus and the machine speed. These variables are also measured, and if the correlation of the variables is deviant, it can be concluded that there is a failure in the drying apparatus. In that case it is possible to identify the dryer cylinder where the failure is by measuring the temperature of the cylinders.

The surface temperatures of the first drying cylinders (20) in the dryer section (R) are measured. The dry solids content/moisture content of the paper web (W) and the temperature of the paper web (W) before said first drying cylinders (20) are measured. In view of producing the desired running situation, based on the measurement results obtained, the surface temperatures of said first drying cylinders (20) and/or the dry solids content/moisture content and/or the temperature of the paper web (W) before said first drying cylinders (20) is/are regulated.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for controlling a sheet-making process. In the solution, a sheet matching desired values is manufactured. A measuring unit measures the state of the process to produce one or more measurement value representing the state of the process. A comparator compares each measurement value with a corresponding desired value and, on the basis of the comparison, forms an error representing the difference between at least one measurement value and desired value. A control unit forms at least two control action candidates based on the error using at least two process models, of which at least one is a perturbed process model. A processing unit forms one control action from the control action candidates, with which control action the sheet-making process is controlled to produce a sheet matching the desired values.

Abstract: Multiple two-dimensional variation patterns are extracted from two-dimensional sheet measurement data of sheet material being manufactured with the variation patterns being classified to identify the causes of the extracted patterns. The extracted two-dimensional variation patterns are identified with the elements or components of the process or machine which caused the patterns. The machine components which cause the variation patterns can then be adjusted and/or controlled so that the patterns can be reduced or substantially eliminated in sheets of material produced by the machine. In addition to adjustment and/or control of the process or machine producing the sheet of material, the extracted variation patterns can be used as new representations of sheet quality, process or machine quality and the patterns will provide more in-depth understanding for operators of the machine.

Abstract: In the production of de-inked pulp, measuring devices are used to register spectral and/or physical characteristic values of a starting material. These values are then fed to a neural network, by means of which correction variables are obtained for a regulating or controlling device which in provided. According to the invention, the measuring device is used to evaluate at least the starting materials of the production of pulp and/or paper. The evaluation of the characteristics of the raw material used in the production of pulp and paper is thereby possible.

Abstract: A sample collecting device takes samples from the white water drained from the web through the wire in the wire part, at a number of points in the cross direction of the web. An analyzer analyses the samples and forms a retention profile for controlling the paper machine. The device for measurement and regulation of the retention profile comprises means for measurement of the retention profile across the web width from different points of width of the web. The headbox comprises ducts passing to different points of width of the headbox to pass a flow of liquid containing a retention agent in the headbox into connection with the stock flow to regulate the retention profile across the web width. The ducts have valves which are regulated on the basis of the retention profile data for regulating the retention agent into duct flow.
