  • Patent number: 5503716
Abstract: The invention relates to a device in a paper machine for guiding a web and in particular in guiding a leader of the web. The device operates in a paper machine in the area between a center roll of the press section and a separate press nip in the press section. The separate press nip is formed between a smooth-faced upper roll and a hollow-faced lower roll. Around this lower roll, a lower felt of the separate press is placed and runs from a suction-transfer roll placed at the proximity of the center roll as a straight run into the separate press nip. At the initial end of the straight run of the felt of the separate press nip, in connection with the guide roll, air-transfer devices are arranged, by whose means a reduced pressure is produced at least across the width of the leader in connection with a closing inlet nip between the felt and the leader and/or in connection with an opening outlet nip defined between the guide roll and the straight run of the felt.

  • Patent number: 5445055
Abstract: A method for cutting of the leader of the web in a paper or board machine in the drying section of the machine by a jet of pressurized water. According to the method, the web is placed against the drying wire when it is being cut, and the jet is directed at the web from the free side of the web. The water-jet pressure used is about 40 bar to about 400 bar bar, preferably about 100 bar, which is produced by an ordinary pressure washer.

  • Patent number: 5232554
Abstract: The dry end of a paper making machine includes a twin wire dryer group following a single wire dryer group. The paper web is continuously guided by a support belt which moves alternately between dryer cylinders and intermediate deflecting rolls in the single wire dryer group. In the twin wire dryer group, the web travels over open lengths between dryer cylinders in the two rows of the second group. A rope guide threads the web into the twin wire dryer group. The start of the rope guide, called the rope shears, is in the vicinity of the periphery of the last or next to last deflecting roll called the selected deflecting roll in the single wire dryer group. Between the selected deflecting roll at the start of the rope shears and the preceding selected dryer cylinder, there is a relatively long straight path of travel for the support belt. Parallel to that path, there is a scraper and a guide plate which deflects the edge strip of the web laterally into the rope shears which is laterally to the side of the web.

  • Patent number: 5185063
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for cutting a paper web (W) in a group of drying cylinders provided with single-wire draw (13) in a paper machine or a finishing machine. The drying wire (13) is separated from the paper web (W) by one or more guide rolls (14a,14b) thereby creating an open draw (W.sub.o) of the web (W). The cutting of the paper web (W) is carried out at the open draw (W.sub.o) of the web (W). After the open draw (W.sub.o), the drying wire (13) and the web (W) are rejoined on the surface of the following leading or drying cylinder (11). Preferably, two guide rolls (14a,14b) are utilized whereby the first roll is disposed so that the drying wire (13) supports the web (W) up to the location of the guide roll (14a), which is followed by an open draw (W.sub.o) of the web. The drying wire (13) is returned onto the following leading or drying cylinder (11) with the second guide roll (14b).

  • Patent number: 4456502
Abstract: A method and mechamism of removing an edge of a paper web formed on a traveling foraminous wire from stock issuing from the slice of a headbox including a blade positioned parallel to the machine direction and located to separate the edge from the flow of stock issuing from the slice opening before it engages the traveling wire and collecting the edge material separated and conveying it away so that the material can be used.

  • Patent number: 4236062
Abstract: A web is electrically perforated at high hole density by applying alternating-current voltage across an electrode pair facing the web while pressurized gas is supplied to the electrode gap. Voltage amplitude level and gas flow and direction thereof are selected to provide for the striking of multiple arcs per half-cycle, thereby enabling reduction in spacing between adjacent perforations in the web. Perforation practice involving preselection of cigarette filter tipping paper based on chemical composition of the paper is also disclosed as is apparatus for use in implementing the described practices, wherein electrode support members have gas flow conduits formed integrally therewith and wherein webs are taken up by a capstan drive unit resiliently biased into engagement with a web take-up roll.

  • Patent number: 4219727
Abstract: In a ventilated cigarette making system the tipping paper is perforated before assembly of the cigarettes using a spark perforator which is controlled by a feedback arrangement, in response to the resultant air permeability of the finished cigarettes, or the permeability of the tipping paper as monitored before assembly. Preferably the testing of the finished cigarettes is done in a modified Molins "CID 4" cigarette testing device. The averaged test signal is used to control the frequency of power supply to the spark perforator, whose electrodes are loaded with capacitors so that the change in frequency results in a change in the current flow through the electrodes, and thus the size of the holes produced.

  • Patent number: 4154648
Abstract: A method for the separation of the paper web from the forming fabric in a paper-making machine comprising dividing the web into lengthwise strips to lessen the web adherence to the wire by utilization of a spray means incorporating a plurality of nozzles and then effecting web knock-down and separation from the wire by use of a slotted spray through which pressurized air jets are directed.Through this method very low pressures are required to achieve web separation and the risks of re-contact between web and wire are positively prevented.

  • Patent number: 4139411
Abstract: A continuous web of wood or cellulose pulp leaving a dewatering apparatus such as a suction mould or vat machine and having a relatively high content of water, is slitted in two or more longitudinal webs of approximately the same width. The narrow, slitted webs are turned so as to be parallel and brought together or gathered to a multilayer web which is narrower and thicker than the original web. This multilayer web is subjected to further dewatering in one or more pressing machines having dimensions adapted to those of the multilayer web. Finally, the multilayer web is cut transversely into sheets of appropriate size for stacking and packing in bales of suitable size.

  • Patent number: 4022366
Abstract: An apparatus for transporting a sheet of a flexible material between a first and a second position. The apparatus includes an elongated frame and an air-pervious endless belt movably mounted on first and second pulleys positioned at each end of the frame. The belt has its upper rung travelling from the first pulley, adjacent the first position, to the second pulley, adjacent the second position, and is arranged to receive a lead strip of the sheet from the first position. A vacuum chest having a perforated top extends longitudinally of and below the upper rung of the belt. There are means for evacuating air from the chest in order to apply a vacuum at the undersurface of the belt and thereby cause the lead strip to cling to the belt. The apparatus has means defining an opening where the sheet leaves the belt and an air jet means able to direct air through the opening.
