  • Patent number: 6547924
Abstract: A paper machine for manufacturing textured soft paper comprises a press section with a press nip, through which an impermeable belt and a felt run with the fibrous web between them, a drying cylinder and a transfer roll forming a nip for transfer of the web to the drying cylinder. According to the invention the belt is a texturing belt having a back layer and a web-contacting layer having depressions with surface portions situated between them to form a relief pattern in the web upon passage through the press nip, the texturing belt running from the press to the drying cylinder in order to carry the textured web to the transfer nip. The felt runs away from the texturing belt before a water film formed in the press nip on the texturing belt breaks up. A device is provided before the transfer nip to apply adhesive on the drying cylinder.

  • Patent number: 6475346
Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus clamping at least one paper or non-woven sheet and including two cylinders which run substantially tangent to one another. At least one of the cylinders has on its surface and in a zone that makes contact with the sheet a clamping band having first salient elements. The interaction of the two cylinders in the presence or absence of the sheet subtends an active surface during the rotation of the cylinders. In the invention, at least one of the cylinders has on its surface and in a zone (nip) that makes contact with the other cylinder by means or not of the sheet a load compensating band having second salient elements. This band is selected so that the variation of the consecutive instantaneous active surfaces of the clamping band and of the load compensating band is less than the variation of the consecutive instantaneous active surfaces of the clamping band alone.

  • Patent number: 5913765
Abstract: An improved system for embossing a pattern on an absorbent consumer paper product such as a paper towel includes a first pair of embossing rollers that are patterned to impress a relatively fine preparatory base pattern onto the web, and a second pair of embossing rollers that are patterned to impress a final pattern onto the web. The final pattern is of a type that would cause bursting of the absorbent paper web if the absorbent paper web was passed through the second pair of embossing rollers without first being passed through the first set of embossing rollers. As a result, the formation of the preparatory base pattern by the first set of embossing rollers creates stretchability in the absorbent paper web that enables the final pattern to be impressed thereon by the second pair of embossing rollers without bursting the absorbent paper web.

The combined board has two outer or facing layers or webs of paperboard which sandwich an embossed or dimpled middle paperboard layer or web. Embossments extending in one direction are vacuum formed on one surface of the middle web by the first vacuum drum, while embossments extending in the opposite direction are formed on the other surface of the middle web by the second vacuum drum. The embossments, i.e., concave and convex impressions, are located in a generally chess board pattern. The vacuum openings or apertures of the second drum are larger (larger average diameter) than those of the first drum, to thereby compensate for diminishing flexibility of the middle web due to drying as it passes sequentially over the first and second vacuum drums.

  • Patent number: 4471515
Abstract: Elongated hollow members or tubes frictionally engage the interior wall of a hollow corrugating roll or a hollow pressure roll of a single facer so as to minimize the elastic vibration thereof and thereby to minimize the noise developed and transmitted during the operation of the single facer. A plurality of such tubes of a given diameter are arranged circumferentially about the interior wall of the shell of a roll of a single facer in such manner that each of the tubes frictionally engages the interior wall and so that each of the tubes also engages the adjacent tubes on either side thereof, thereby providing an assembled structure in which the plurality of tubes resist the elastic deformation of the roll and the resultant elastic vibratiion and thereby reduce the noise level.

  • Patent number: 4376671
Abstract: In the manufacture of a multi-ply fibrous web structure, each of a pair of plies of fibrous web material is provided with a pattern of relatively deep, primary, spot embossments each adherent to the opposite ply and surrounded by a pattern of relatively shallow, secondary, non-adherent spot embossments.

  • Patent number: 4236963
Abstract: Softness and bulk are imparted to untextured dry sanitary tissue sheet web by advancing it under ordinary support point tension through the nip of spaced grooved rotary texturing rolls having complementary partially interdigitated texturing ribs acting on both sides of the web with progressive wave-stretch texturing deformation of the web to release the hydrogen bonds between some of the fibers in the network of fibers in the web without breaking the fibers, and while maintaining the elasticity of the web.

  • Patent number: 4196046
Abstract: Apparatus is described for adjusting backlash clearances between the flutes of two meshing corrugating rolls, while the rolls are rotating, permitting minimization of noise levels. The corrugating rolls are driven through a pair of meshing helical gears, one of which is free to move axially on its drive shaft. A mechanism moves the helical gear axially, resulting in a slight rotation of the corrugating roll drive shaft, relative to the other corrugating roll. The preferred mechanism is mounted about the drive shaft of the movable helical gear. A hand wheel adjuster is threaded onto a sleeve fixed to a frame or other support and contacts the rotating helical gear through a bearing mounted on a second sleeve fixed to the gear. Rotation of the hand wheel adjuster causes the adjusting axial movement of the helical gear system.

  • Patent number: 4144124
Abstract: A machine for manufacturing paper, such as tissue paper, includes a twin-wire former made up of a rotary forming roll and a pair of endless fabrics, each of which may be a wire or felt, lapped around the rotary forming roll to provide twin-wire web formation therewith. At the location where these endless fabrics travel beyond the forming roll they diverge from each other to define between themselves a diverging space where one of the endless fabrics has an upwardly directed surface on which the web is carried beyond the forming roll. This latter endless fabric carries the web to a press section where this latter endless fabric travels with the web through a first press nip of the press section defined between an inner press roll situated within the loop of the latter endless fabric and an outer press roll situated outside of the latter loop.

  • Patent number: 4087319
Abstract: A continuously advancing tissue paper web is separated from a Yankee dryer roll and creper, and then received and transported on an endless fabric conveyor and embossing belt travelling toward and over a reel drum. At the reeling station the web is threaded onto a reel spool and wound into a parent roll pressing against the conveyor and embossing belt running over the reel drum and thereby embossing the web in the roll/drum nip. Means are provided for automatically air threading the web onto the reel spool. For higher bulk tissue creped sheet, additional dry embossing may be effected while the sheet is being transported by the conveyor belt.

  • Patent number: 4000242
Abstract: A system for treating paper webs and the like including a platen roller and a plurality of support rollers angularly spaced thereabout. At least one of the support rollers is an embossing roller cooperative with the platen roller to emboss a web advanced between the facing juxtaposed surfaces of the platen and embossing rollers. The platen roller is floatingly confined by the support rollers and has no rigidly fixed axis of rotation. Such platen roller is also hollow, including a cylindrical wall component defining a gaseous fluid pressurized chamber. The cylindrical wall component of the roller is of resilient construction and is inwardly depressible by the support rollers against the force of the gaseous pressure fluid acting outwardly thereagainst within the pressurized chamber. The web material to be treated is passed through the nips defined by one or more support rollers, including at least one embossment roller, and the platen roller.
