Patent number: 6432262Abstract: A method of stabilizing hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution, such as a circulating water slurry, comprising a peroxide, such as hydrogen peroxide. The aqueous solution may include organic matter. The method comprises adding an aldehyde donor, such as a methylolhydantoin, to the solution (or slurry). The inventors have discovered that aldehyde donors significantly reduce the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by catalase and other peroxide decomposing enzymes, which are often present in recycled paper. As a result, less hydrogen peroxide needs to be added to a solution to effectively bleach organic matter in the solution. Furthermore, aldehyde donors are safe to handle and cost effective. Another embodiment is a method of bleaching recycled papers in a circulating water slurry comprising organic matter. The method comprises adding hydrogen peroxide and an aldehyde donor to the slurry.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2001Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: Lonza, Inc.Inventors: Bill Ney, Richard Sinden, Philip Gerdon Sweeny, Patrick Jay Lutz, Olga Borokhov

Publication number: 20020100564Abstract: Disclosed is a process for preparing a paper web. The paper web is prepared from a low-grade furnish, which contains low-grade pulps, such as recycled pulp and/or groundwood pulp, and which, in one preferred embodiment, is a newsprint furnish. In accordance with the disclosed process, a pre-flocculated filler is added to the furnish prior to forming the paper web from the furnish. Filler will be retained in the web, and retention of undesired components of the furnish in the web will be reduced as compared with newsprint in which a filler is incorporated via conventional processes. Another embodiment contemplates the incorporation of a pre-flocculated coated broke slurry into a paper furnish prior to paper formation. The paper web formed via the process of the invention will have improved properties as a result of the incorporation of the pre-flocculated filler or treated broke into the web.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 4, 2002Publication date: August 1, 2002Applicant: Grain Processing CorporationInventors: Richard D. Patent number: 6413364Abstract: The invention provides a process and apparatus for the treatment and recovery of fiberboard and particle board waste. Waste fiberboard and particle board is fed into a steam chamber and steam treated with steam under pressure from a steam generator. When the steam treatment is completed any effluent and excess steam are evacuated from the chamber and the steam treated waste is passed through a rotating trommel. Woodfibers and woodchips pass through the screens of the trommel and are collected for drying and further processing. Waste material, such as melamine coatings, passes through the trommel for collection and disposal. The collected woodfiber and woodchips can be processed for reuse in paper, cardboard or particle board manufacture or as mulch and other ground cover material.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2001Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Inventor: Malcolm Sandison

Patent number: 6413363Abstract: A product and process of making an absorbent paper article such as paper products, towels, napkins and the like is disclosed. In the invention, one may supply a single furnish, or slurry, of cellulose fibers. Then, it is possible to separate or fractionate the slurry into at least two portions based upon fiber length in the slurry. Fines are employed in the process of manufacturing the products, and fines are specifically incorporated into an inner layer of the final paper products. Fines, short fibers, and/or fibrils are used in the process so they may contribute in a positive manner to the final paper product, rather than acting in a negative manner as a chemical “sponge” or waste material. This use of fines in the inner layers of the product reduces the manufacturing cost and waste produced in the process. A soft paper product with good strength characteristics results from the process.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2000Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Jay C. Patent number: 6001218Abstract: A method of making sanitary paper products from newspapers. The method includes the steps of: (a) pulping newspapers in water with agitation to produce a pulp slurry, the fiber in the newspapers having an oil content ranging from about 0.025% to about 2.0%, by weight, and the slurry having a consistency between about 3% and about 18% and a pH below about 8.0; (b) adding a surfactant to the pulp slurry and maintaining the pulp slurry at a temperature above about 100.degree. F. for at least 15 minutes such that a substantial quantity of the oil in the old newspaper is retained; (c) increasing the consistency of the slurry to between about 3.5% and about 18%; and (d) using the treated pulp as a source of fibers in a paper making process to produce sanitary paper products.Type: GrantFiled: July 7, 1997Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Jay Chiehlung Hsu, Nauman Noorali Lakhani, Reginald Smith
