  • Patent number: 4612973
Abstract: Cold-hearth melt-spinning apparatus for adapted improved continuous casting of refractory and reactive alloys possesses (1) a cold crucible having a selectively grooved surface operative to reduce both melt "freezing" at the melt/crucible interface and input heating power requirements, and (2) a replaceable nozzle of a refractory material that is friction-fit in an aperture provided therefor in the crucible. The confronting nozzle/crucible walls define a thermally impeding interface which maintains the nozzle at a temperature sufficient to substantially eliminate melt "freezing" in and across the nozzle orifice. The melt is ejected as a molten jet from the crucible by pressure, rapidly quenched on a suitably configured spinning disk into either filaments or flakes, and passed to an environmentally protected processing compartment. Arc heating of the melt is provided by a water-cooled and selectively movable electrode.

  • Patent number: 4573517
Abstract: A fiber reinforced metal is made by introducing an array of fibers into a die, charging the die with molten metal by vacuum infiltration and then applying pressure by means of an inert gas to improve the penetration of the molten metal into the fiber array. Apparatus for producing a reinforced metal cylinder comprises a cylindrical former (2) onto which a composite fiber (3) of boron, silicon and carbon is wound. The former (2) forms an inner closure member for the die defining a cylindrical die cavity (8) with an outer die body (4). A central cavity (15) within the former (2) is for insertion of a heating element to facilitate the flow of metal through the cavity (8). The die cavity is evacuated via conduit (16) and molten metal is then drawn into the cavity via the passage (7). After charging the die with molten metal the conduit (16) is connected to a source of high pressure nitrogen.

  • Patent number: 4293023
Abstract: A method and device for the manufacture of metal bands, particularly of an amorphous metal alloy is provided. The liquid alloy is deposited on a cooling body having a rapidly moving surface, upon which solidification into a metal band occurs. Concurrent with the cooling body surface movement, the cooling body and the melt stream are moved relative to one another at right angles to the direction of the melt stream. This additional movement allows utilization of the entire cooling body surface and not merely that in the plane of the melt stream.

  • Patent number: 4146081
Abstract: The present method and apparatus for die casting of metals such as aluminum, is especially suitable for casting under vacuum. The casting is performed under such operating conditions that a contact between the molten metal being cast and the free atmosphere is avoided all the way from the melt to the casting proper. For this purpose, the present casting apparatus includes a closeable and evacuable transport container connected to the casting apparatus proper by a coupling which is also evacuable. The transport container is placed on a filling chamber and the evacuating apparatus is arranged to simultaneously evacuate the filling chamber, the transport container and the coupling between the transport container and the filling chamber proper. The evacuation takes place in a direction opposite to the flow direction of the metal being cast. If desired, further evacuating means may be provided for evacuation of the filling chamber and the die in the direction of the metal flow.

  • Patent number: 3989088
Abstract: A casting machine including a control circuit which automatically controls ts operation. The casting machine includes a casting chamber which supports an alloy filled open-ended container whose open end faces the sprue hole of an investment casting ring. The control circuit couples a vacuum to the casting chamber while maintaining the casting chamber in its initial upright position. After a first timing interval, the chamber is inverted and the vacuum is decoupled from the casting chamber, and compressed air is applied to the casting chamber. After a second subsequent time interval the casting chamber is automatically returned to its initial upright position, the action of which causes the casting chamber to be automatically vented to the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 3977462
Abstract: A molding arrangement to produce a die cast of a complicated shape by using an air-evacuated, air-tight work chamber. The chamber has a crucible and a mold, and an inert gas is used. An arc is generated and the electric resistance of the inert gas is broken between a pair of electrodes provided in the chamber by oscillating a high frequency current from a high frequency oscillator circuit connected outside the chamber. The metal material is melted in the crucible by the arc, while supplying the inert gas and using discharging gas generated from the metal. When the metal is melted the injection of inert gas into the chamber is stopped, so as to make the chamber a vacuum. The furnace, which includes the chamber, is rotated and the melt in the crucible is transferred into the mold. The melt is then forced to reach every corner in the mold by the pressure of the inert gas which is injected again into the chamber.
