Abstract: The current invention replaces the toggle clamping mechanism of known die casting machines with a hydraulic clamping mechanism. Advantageously, the machine with hydraulic clamps requires less space than the machines utilizing toggle clamping mechanisms. The machine of this invention has a significantly smaller footprint, takes up less space and is about 30% shorter than machines with toggle clamps. The hydraulic clamping mechanism of the current invention not only decreases the size of the casting machine, but also produces uniform clamping force. The hydraulic clamp according to one presently preferred embodiment of this invention is a hydro-mechanical clamp.

Using either data from a die surface temperature for a selected location detected by a pyrometer, the last instant before the die is closed, or the alloy-die interface boundary data from a thermocouple, the inventor's equations loaded in a computer calculate and graph the solidification pattern for the casting wall and the quantity of heat remaining in the alloy wall vs. time above the dynamic solidus thereby establishing parameters for control of facets of the injection phase. A pair of end metal molds 14 and 15 surround both ends of the rotor. A helical core 16 is attached to one end metal mold 14 so as to be helically passed through the profile portion of the rotor. A rotor-shaped cavity 13 is formed inside by the profile portion divided metal molds, and the end metal molds. Hot metal is pressurized, and injected and solidified in the cavity. Then, the end metal mold 14 having the helical core is pulled out by being rotated along a helical line.

Abstract: A fiber reinforced porous preform is positioned within a die cavity defined by upper and lower die members, and the lower die member defines a gate opening in the center portion of a water cooled shot sleeve which receives a vertically moveable shot piston. The area of the gate opening is small relative to the area of the shot sleeve, and the lower die member defines an annular recess above the inner surface of the shot sleeve for entrapping a shell of pre-solidified metal. Air vent slots extend outwardly between the shot sleeve and lower die member and are closed by the shell of pre-solidified metal. The structure prevents pre-solidified metal and air from entering the die cavity.
