Patent number: 5908065Abstract: Squeeze casting of high integrity, near net shape castings is performed in a mould cavity defined by cooperating die parts which are movable with respect to each other and have a separation distance which is selected to define a predetermined cavity volume for the cast article. A conduit has a first end connected to an entrance in the lower die part of the mould cavity and a second end connected to a receptacle which contains molten metal. Molten metal is transferred upwardly from the receptacle through the conduit to fill or substantially fill the mould cavity. The entrance to the mould cavity is sealed, and pressure is applied on the die parts to further reduce the cavity volume during solidification of the metal in the mould cavity.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1997Date of Patent: June 1, 1999Assignee: Papervision LimitedInventor: Geoffrey Allan Chadwick

Patent number: 5143141Abstract: Controlled-pressure casting of molten metals using a die with an extractable punch and a fixed die, includes positioning and stopping the punch within the die so as to define a casting cavity with a volume greater that that of the part to be obtained. A metered amount of liquid metal is then poured into the casting cavity through a duct which leads into the cavity, and the punch is moved to close inside the die so as to create a pressure suitable for distributing the metal throughout the cavity. A high-pressure compression is then exerted on the metal contained in the cavity and, maintained until the molten metal solidifies, the punch is partially removed from the die, with separation of the punch from the formed part, before finally removing the punch from the die and extracting the part from the die.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1990Date of Patent: September 1, 1992Assignee: TVA Holding S.p.A.Inventor: Claudio Frulla

Patent number: 4049040Abstract: An improved method of and apparatus for pressure casting metal are disclosed. The method is generally known in the art as "squeeze casting". The present method provides for casting articles under forging pressures in a die to predetermined dimensions regardless of varying amounts of excess of poured molten metal, by the inclusion of a retractable charge-quantity compensator positioned adjacent the casting cavity to form on the cast article an extension which may vary in volume from article to article. The extension is later removed. The charge-quantity compensator may be in the form of a piston in a cylinder with hydraulic fluid behind the piston connected to a hydraulic source. The piston, which may be normally biased toward the die cavity but yieldable away therefrom is fixed in position when the punch die has advanced to a predetermined position at which the quantity of casting material in the die cavity is appropriate for the article being formed. Full casting pressure is then applied.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1975Date of Patent: September 20, 1977Assignee: N L Industries, Inc.Inventor: Richard F. Lynch

Patent number: 3960201Abstract: The invention concerns an improved injection device for molding machines with a cooling chamber for casting of non-ferrous metals and alloys. It is characterized by a two-part piston, one part of which slides freely and coaxially inside the other, forming a chamber in which a gas, neutral with respect to the metal to be cast, is compressed by the forward movement of the piston by virtue of a stop-pin, then liberated and expanded at the end of injection in a container of liquid metal where it causes a balancing force effect and improves the filling of the mold. This device makes it possible to eliminate the "ramroddings" which occur in single-piston machines at the end of injection and to obtain cast products which are free of defects.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1974Date of Patent: June 1, 1976Assignee: Societe de Vente de l'Aluminium PechineyInventor: Robert Portalier
