  • Patent number: 9138926
Abstract: An apparatus simultaneously operates all split locking nuts of an injection molding machine two-platen clamp unit to engage and disengage the split locking nuts with clamp unit strain rods. Each split locking nut has opposed pivoting nut halves operated by coupling rotation of a rotating member through a predetermined angular range to the nut halves via translating members such as push rods. The push rods are pivotably connected to the rotating member and to the nut halves so that the direction of each push rod relative to the rotating member and to the nut half changes with rotation of the rotating member. A method of molding comprises: disengaging split locking nuts from strain rods; positioning a moveable platen assembly to abut mating mold components; simultaneously operating the split locking nuts to engage the strain rods; and, applying force to the abutted mold components sufficient for injection and cure of melt.

Abstract: As cams provided on platen-side attachments move from a lock-releasing position to a locking position while the ball-supporting members of the platen-side attachments remain inserted in the ball-receiving members of mold-side attachments, locking balls sliding in inclined-locking grooves are moved outward in a direction at right angles to the direction in which the cams move, and are set in engaging-locking grooves and abut on the curved parts of the engaging-locking grooves. Therefore, the mold-side attachments are closely attached and fixed to the platen-side attachments. As the cams move from the locking position to the lock-releasing position, the pushing balls sliding in inclined-pushing grooves are moved outward in a direction at right angles to the direction in which the cams move, and abut on the curved parts of the engaging-pushing grooves. When it is necessary to change over exclusive dies and change over is performed by: extending tie bar removal cylinders provided in a frame behind the movable plate so as to remove tie bars from a fixed plate; and moving a movable rail of internal rails to an open position and moving the change over carriage in along the internal rails from the outside.
