  • Patent number: 4986334
Abstract: A horizontally movable die has a bottom slide and cooperates with a stationary die in a die casting machine, which machine has a vertical injector for molten metal mounted underneath the dies and oscillatable to an acute angle to the vertical from under the dies for filling with molten metal. The outwardly movable shot sleeve of the injector seats in two semi-annular docking blocks, one mounted in the stationary die and the other mounted on an outward projection or extended portion of the slide on the movable die. Thus, when the dies are closed, the two semi-annular docking blocks for the shot sleeve form an aperture completely within the stationary die, which aperture communicates with an outwardly tapered trough duct that extends to the casting between the dies. This trough configuration forms a sprue in the stationary die that permits the separation of the movable die from the stationary die and then the retraction of the bottom slide without obstruction by any part of the sprue or the casting.

These leaks often lead to serious accidents and related operating interruptions. According to the invention these problems are solved by a casting method, wherein all movements of the mold occur in a vertical plane. With a preferred embodiment of apparatus for the performance of the method the mold is placed in a positive or form-locking manner with its casting or pour opening upon the casting hole of the metal containing vessel or basin and pressed against the latter in a fluidtight fashion by means of a pneumatic lifting cylinder. This affords the advantage of a simple connection of the mold with the basin and without requiring a coupling mechanism, and, additionally, the heating of the riser or up tube and/or immersion tube can be omitted, which otherwise conventionally was performed by gas heating.

Abstract: In a horizontal pressure die-casting machine having two fixing plates, each for one die the invention comprising a one of the fixing plate being pivotable into a horizontal position about a horizontal axis, and assembled of two parts, namely a base plate and a mounting plate. In the horizontal position, the die to be carried by the mounting plate and, provisionally, also the die to be carried by the stationary fixing plate can be exactly mounted and a cast produced can easily be removed. Abstract: A pull-back ram cylinder apparatus in combination with a vertical mold clamping machine to be incorporated in a vertical molding or casting machine. The pull-back apparatus comprises a hydraulic cylinder for actuating a hollow ram. A ram extension consisting of the ram and a ram rod extending into the ram in a thread engagement is slidably fitted in the cylinder. The ram rod extends downwardly from the cylinder and is connected to a movable platen of the clamping machine carrying a movable mold. The cylinder has a lower throttle portion in which radial openings for discharging an operation oil are formed in an axially spaced arrangement. The inner diameter of the throttle portion is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the ram. The throttle portion having the axially spaced openings serves, in cooperation with the head end portion of the ram, as buffering means by which the movable mold is allowed to come into contact gently with a stationary mold.

Abstract: An apparatus for making foundry cores. A pair of support plates, each of which carries a core box half, are mounted on carriages and the carriages are movable toward and away from each other to bring the core box halves into mating relation. Mounted above the support plates is a reciprocating carriage that carries a sand head and a gas head. The carriage is initially positioned to locate the sand head beneath a hopper where the head is filled with sand impregnated with an uncured resin binder, and the carriage is then shifted to position the sand head over the core box and the sand is blown into the core box. The carriage is then returned to its original position so that the gas head is positioned over the core box, and a gas, which serves as a catalyst for the resin binder, is introduced into the core box to cure the resin. A manifold system is incorporated in the support plates so that the gas discharged from the core box is passed through a scrubber before being discharged to the atmosphere.
