  • Patent number: 9339952
Abstract: A nanofluid molding arrangement includes a mold tool (12) having movable pieces (14, 16) that move between an open and closed position. When the moveable pieces (14, 16) are in the closed position, they form a mold cavity (18) that defines a surface for creating a molded part. The nanofluid molding arrangement also includes at least one injection port (22) for injecting molten resin directly into the mold cavity (18) such that when molten resin flows into the cavity and begins to cool, the molded part begins to form. After the molded part begins forming and injection of the molten resin is stopped, a nanofluid having a colloidal suspension of thermally conductive nanoparticles suspended in an aqueous or organic solution is applied to the mold tool (12), through at least one cooling port, to wick away or draw heat out and cool the mold cavity and the formed part within the mold cavity (18).

  • Patent number: 5850871
Abstract: An improved continuous casting mold and foot guide assembly includes a mold having a casting passage defined therein, a frame member, mounting structure for mounting the frame member to the mold for relative movement toward and away from an axis of the casting passage, and a strand support member for providing support to a strand of continuously cast material as it emerges from the casting passage. Biasing structure is provided for biasing the frame member toward the axis of the casting passage and, advantageously, is positioned so as not to occupy space that is behind the frame member. As a result, the assembly is compatible with all models of casting machines and will be less susceptible to degradation as a result of radiant heat and steam that is emitted from the strand during operation. In addition, a load cell is provided for monitoring the amount of relative force between the frame member and the strand during operation.

Abstract: A continuous casting having a mold for producing strands in the form of slabs, thin slabs, blooms, and billets which results in a central running of the strand in the entire strand guide and in highly reliable casting at casting speeds of up to 6m/min. As a result of the cambered, concave shape of the mold and entire strand guide, the strand is guided coaxially to the entire strand guide from the cast surface until the strand exits at the delivery end of the continuous casting machine so that sideways movement of the entire strand in the direction of one of the narrow sides (snaking) is suppressed.

Abstract: A continuous casting mold for producing strands in the form of slabs, thin slabs, blooms, and billets resulting in highly reliable casting at casting speeds of up to 6 m/min. The cambered shape of the mold causes the strand to be centered during casting by the mold so that sideways movement of the strand shell toward one of the narrow sides (snaking) is suppressed or moderated. This symmetrical running of the strand shell box during casting in the mold results in a uniform symmetrical formation of the strand shell and its temperature field (isotherms), the withdrawal forces, and the loading of the strand shell in relation to the strand axis in the casting direction, even despite weaving of the strand in the region of the strand guide.

Abstract: A continuous chain caster has upper and lower mold assemblies comprising endless belts and chains traveling at synchronized speeds. The mold assemblies meet to form a mold channel which is filled with molten metal from a headbox and feed tip. As the molten metal passes through the mold channel, the metal solidifies into the shape of the mold channel. Each belt is positioned outside the corresponding chain so that the smooth surface of the belt defines the surface of the mold channel thereby preventing the formation of fins between mold blocks which make up the chain, protecting the chain blocks, and neutralizing deformations in the chain blocks. The upper and lower blocks of the chains have protrusions at opposite ends which engage the opposing blocks to form the sides of the mold channel. By sliding the chains relative to each other, the width of the mold channel is adjustable.
