Patent number: 4300618Abstract: A casting wheel for a continuous casting machine of the wheel-and-belt type is provided with at least one annular member defining one of the lateral walls of the casting groove. The annular member is secured to one of the support flanges of the casting ring preferably by interposition of a gauged annular distance piece, this piece having each time an axial length such as to obtain, when added to the annular member, the desired groove width. The casting wheel is particularly suitable for casting aluminum strips. Substitution of a gauged annular distance piece with another having a different axial length allows the width of the cast strips to be varied without substituting the whole casting ring.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1978Date of Patent: November 17, 1981Inventor: Giulio Properzi

Patent number: 4270593Abstract: A method of changing the cross-sectional format of a strand when continuously casting strands by using a mould, involves at least one mould side wall which is displaced relative to an opposite mould side wall and has its inclination changed. According to the method the displacement of the mould side wall during casting is effected by step-wise changing of the inclination in a manner that, in a first step, the upper or lower rim region of the mould side wall is displaced in one direction, and, in a second step, the opposite rim region of this mould side wall is displaced in the same direction.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1979Date of Patent: June 2, 1981Assignee: Voest-Alpine AktiengesellschaftInventor: Ernst Bachner

Patent number: 4124058Abstract: A continuous casting mold formed of a front wall, a spaced rear wall and side wall members extending between said walls to form an upwardly and downwardly opening, roughly rectangular in cross section casting cavity. The side wall members are moveable towards and away from each other to adjust the width of the casting cavity. The side walls members are formed of interior face plates having side edges which are perpendicular to and in face-to-face contact with their adjacent front and rear wall surfaces, and backing plates having side edges spaced a short distance away from the front and rear wall surfaces. Mounted upon the backing plate side edges are guide blocks, each having an exposed surface co-planar with the edge surface of its adjacent face plate edge for guiding and positioning the side wall members against tilting relative to the front and rear wall interior surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 1977Date of Patent: November 7, 1978Inventor: Floyd R. Gladwin

Patent number: 4086951Abstract: A method of enlarging width of a cast piece during continuous casting. It comprises stopping pouring a molten steel into a mold during continuous casting, positioning a supporting plate at the bottom of the mold without lowering the surface of the bath, moving a short wall of the mold, placing a cooling agent on the supporting plate inside the mold, pouring the molten steel into the mold to obtain a cast piece, and thereafter removing the supportng plate to withdraw the cast piece. An apparatus for placing the supporting plate such that it can move back and fore freely on the bottom of the moving short wall of the mold is provided. In order to smooth the movement of the short wall of the mold, a lubricating agent may be placed at a portion where the long walls contact the short wall of the mold, or holes or grooves for supplying lubricating agent may be provided on both ends of the short wall of the mold.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1977Date of Patent: May 2, 1978Assignee: Nippon Steel CorporationInventors: Riyota Takahasi, Takayosi Yamada, Makoto Kimura, Seiji Yosikawa

Patent number: 4061177Abstract: In apparatus for the continuous casting of metal in strip form between moving belts, belt support means comprising a multiplicity of elements that are distributed crosswise and lengthwise of a belt path area beside the mold space and are individually yieldable against a loading force, permit close belt stabilization to a selected path while yielding locally under excess outward force by the belt such as caused by solidified metal. Arrangement of belt support and cooling means along the mold space in successive sections each individually adjusted in respect to one or more of the conditions of belt path taper; degree of compliance, if any, in the retention of the belt against the support; and cooling action; are such that these features, as well as provision, if desired, of local yieldability, permit accommodation of the apparatus to various requirements of casting operation.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1975Date of Patent: December 6, 1977Assignee: Alcan Research and Development LimitedInventor: Olivo Giuseppe Sivilotti
