  • Patent number: 9174273
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for controlling a molten metal surface in a mold that are effective to various disturbances are provided. The method and the apparatus for controlling a molten metal surface level in a mold according to the present invention perform the following operations of: measuring the molten metal surface level in the mold of a continuous-casting machine; changing a reference position of oscillation of the mold based on the difference between a molten metal surface setting value set in advance as a desired value of the molten metal surface and a measured value of the molten metal surface level; and making the reference position of oscillation follow molten metal surface fluctuations.

  • Patent number: 8151867
Abstract: A continuous casting device, including a mould, an electromagnetic device arranged outside the mould and arranged to provide an electromagnetic field acting on a melt in the mould, the electromagnetic device being supplied with electric current includes a base frequency and harmonics, and thereby providing a first electromagnetic field based on the base frequency and a second electromagnetic field based on the harmonics, and an inductive sensor, arranged at the mould for the purpose of sensing the position of a meniscus of the melt, and operating at frequencies corresponding to the harmonics. The continuous casting device includes at least one screen between the electromagnetic device and the sensor, and the screen is arranged so as to prevent the second electromagnetic field from disturbing the operation of the sensor but to permit the first electromagnetic field to act on the melt in the region of the meniscus.

  • Patent number: 6517604
Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring the level of a free surface of molten metal in an electromagnetic continuous casting process using an AC electromagnetic field. A detection coil is provided to detect the sum of a magnetic field applied from an induction coil and an induced magnetic field based on eddy current in the molten metal. An arithmetic unit is provided to detect the surface level of the molten metal by removing a variation of the applied magnetic field with a variation in current to the induction coil from an output signal from the detection coil. The surface level of the molten metal can be accurately measured by determining whether a variation in the output of the detection coil results from a variation in the applied magnetic field or a variation in the surface level of the molten metal.

  • Patent number: 6337566
Abstract: The present invention relates to a continuous casting apparatus for continuously casting molten metal. More particularly, the present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling a surface level of molten metal in a mold when molten metal is continuously cast. The continuous casting apparatus of the invention comprises: a mold in which molten metal is poured and solidified; and an eddy current type molten metal surface level sensor for detecting a molten metal surface level in the mold. In the continuous casting apparatus having an electromagnetic coil arranged in such a manner that the electromagnetic coil surrounds the mold and also having an electric power supply for generating a pulse magnetic field from the electromagnetic coil, there are provided a mechanism for taking out a pulse trigger signal corresponding to the magnetic field from the electric power supply, and a mechanism for controlling a time of detecting a surface of molten metal by the molten metal level sensor.
