Abstract: A composite metal sheet or plate is manufactured by completely immersing an assembly of parallel or substantially parallel metal core sheets in molten metal at a lower melting point than the metal of the core sheets, and after the molten metal has solidified reducing the thickness of the ingot by hot rolling in a direction generally normal to the planes of the core sheets. The method has a particularly useful but by no means exclusive application in the production of reinforced aluminium alloy sheets and plates.
Abstract: Strips of amorphous metal containing embedded particulate matter and method for making it. Strips of amorphous metal containing embedded particles of abrasive material are useful for working the surfaces of solid articles by abrasion for forming or surface improvement. The method of making such strips involves forcing molten metal of a glass-forming alloy containing admixed particulate matter onto the surface of a moving chill body under pressure through a slotted nozzle located in close proximity to the surface of the chill body.
Abstract: A method of forming filaments, particularly continuous strips, sheets or the like, by rotating a chill wheel against a meniscus of molten material formed about the periphery of an elongate orifice through which the molten material is fed under uniform fluid pressure along the longitudinal axis of the orifice. Filaments of different widths, thicknesses and composite structures are extracted by utilizing single or plural chill wheels in conjunction with plural orifices.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for casting material into a ribbon shape in which molten material to be cast is extruded in a thin ribbon onto a moving sheet of foil of a metal having a sufficiently lower melting point or which forms an alloy with the molten material which has a sufficiently lower melting point than the molten material, to cause almost immediate melting of at least a portion of the foil which comes in contact with the ribbon of molten casting material, with crystallization of the cast material occuring on a layer of liquified foil or foil-cast material alloy. Also disclosed is the disposing of the metal foil, in the vicinity of the contact with the ribbon of molten casting material, on a cooled surface which is moving past the region of extrusion of the molten material. The method and apparatus is disclosed to be particularly useful in making cast ribbon of semiconductor material with a foil backing and desirable properties for photovoltaic solar cell applications.
Abstract: A cladding process and apparatus in which steel strip or sheet is cladded with a metal of lower melting point, e.g. lead, by maintaining a bank of constant level of the molten cladding material between a belt and the strip or sheet substrate which passes along an inclined path and is cooled to harden the molten material thereon. During the cooling process the applied material is compressed against the substrate.
