Patent number: 4449575Abstract: A heat exchanger for high temperature operation has a ceramic-walled chamber traversed by ceramic tubes and is capable of use inter alia in fluidised bed applications. The tubes are arranged in series of successive banks and to give a compact arrangement the successive banks of tubes at different levels are disposed transversely to each other. The tubes may have internal and external reinforcing means to allow them to withstand the loads imposed by the fluidised bed and generally to allow longer tubes to be used in ceramic constructions. The internal reinforcing means may also provide restrictions that in fluidised bed applications can function to minimise the effects of tube wall fracture by reducing carry-over of bed particles seeping into the tubes. For improved end sealing, means can be provided to hold resilient ceramic seals compressed against the tube ends while permitting axial thermal movement of the tubes.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1981Date of Patent: May 22, 1984Inventors: William R. Patent number: 4438808Abstract: A spine fin heat exchanger is disclosed in which the density of the spine fins is greater along the portions of the passes within the pattern of high flow of air or the like across the heat exchanger. Those portions of the tubing at the bends and outside such pattern are formed with a lower spine fin density. Such lower density outside the patterns and at the bends does not materially reduce the overall heat exchange capacity of the heat exchanger, and results in a heat exchanger where less material and time are required to form the heat exchanger without any significant loss in its capacity. The heat exchanger is preferably formed by changing the rate of feed of the tube as it feeds through the winding head to increase the amount of stretch of the spine fin strip along the zones of low density compared to the amount of stretch in the strip along the zone of high density. Consequently, the same amount of material is required for each wrap along both zones.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1981Date of Patent: March 27, 1984Inventors: Herbert J. Venables, III, Herbert J. The solar energy system collects heat during the periods when sun energy is available and the air convector system collects heat when available from warm air. The heat from both systems is stored directly in the earth which surrounds the evaporator of the heat pump system.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1977Date of Patent: August 21, 1979Inventor: Edward W. Bottum

Patent number: 4161214Abstract: A laundry dryer source of heat for providing warm gas to dry laundry is utilized to heat water for laundry washer use, and is particularly suited for coin operated laundries. Each dryer has a gas burner and a heat absorbtion water coil in the flame area of the burner, the coils being connected in a circuit between a cool water outlet and a heated water inlet of a typical automatic water heater tank, with pump means for circulating cool water from the tank through coils and returning heated water from the coils to the tank whenever any of the dryers are in operation. In one embodiment continuous water flow through the coils is provided during heating operation by substantially equal pressure differentials between the cold water inlet and the hot water outlet of each of the coils, and is further assured by provision of coils having substantially straight, horizontal runs, alternate runs being generally coplanar with the planes spaced apart.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1978Date of Patent: July 17, 1979Assignee: James L. Patent number: 4160477Abstract: The spacer grid is formed of metal strips which are bent to have alternating long angular sides and short flat sides. The strips are secured to each other at alternating flat sides to form a series of hexagonal spaces to receive the heat exchanger tubes. In addition, pairs of spring tabs are bent out of each of the angular sides in alternating manner to effect support of the tube in a space. The angular sides form an included angle of 135.degree. with the flat sides.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1977Date of Patent: July 10, 1979Assignee: Sulzer Brothers, Ltd.Inventor: Josua Roffler

Patent number: 4146012Abstract: Solar heat exchange panel manufactured by a high speed rotogravure or heat sealing process wherein two elongated sheets of flexible plastic film are laminated together along lines defining inlet and outlet manifolds and a plurality of flow passages. The manifolds extend substantially the entire length of the sheets, and the flow passageways are arranged in groups to form individual heat exchanger sections which are served by the manifold. Mounting loops are provided along the lateral edges of the panel and adapted for receiving elongated rods by which the panel can be tethered or secured to another such panel.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1977Date of Patent: March 27, 1979Assignee: Acurex CorporationInventors: William Elkins, E. Patent number: 4143709Abstract: Tube support sheets fabricated from bars or machined from plates to have holes which receive a plurality of tubes. Adjacent support sheets cooperate to restrict lateral movement of the tubes without completely surrounding each tube at a tube support sheet and provide large open areas for fluid flow adjacent thereto.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1977Date of Patent: March 13, 1979Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Richard C. Cunningham
