Abstract: Method and apparatus in a steam generator that employs tube support plates within a shroud that is in turn disposed within a shell. The tube support plates are made of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion lower than that of the shroud. The tube support plates are aligned during fabrication, with minimal clearances between components. Using a tube support displacement system, a controlled misalignment is then imposed on one or more tube support plates, as the steam generator heats up. Displacement to produce misalignment is produced only when the steam generator is heated. The tube support plate displacement system has only one part, a push rod, which is internal to the steam generator shroud, thereby minimizing the potential of loose parts.

Abstract: An object is to provide a heat transfer tube support structure capable of preventing deterioration of the reliability and the durability of a heat transfer tube. In a steam generator (heat exchanger) having a lower barrel (vessel), heat transfer tubes disposed in the lower barrel, and tube support plates disposed in the lower barrel and having heat transfer tube insertion holes opened in a thickness direction, support portions for supporting the heat transfer tubes are formed to the intermediate portions of the inner surfaces of the heat transfer tube insertion holes in the axial direction of the heat transfer tube insertion holes, and the regions between the support portions and the respective open ends of the heat transfer tube insertion holes are formed of inclined surfaces inclining in a radial direction outwardly in the heat transfer tube insertion holes toward the open ends, respectively.

  • Patent number: 8573285
Abstract: A variety of methods of forming polymer manifolds and the resulting manifold structures are described. The described manifolds are well suited for use in heat exchangers and a variety of other applications. In one aspect a polymer manifold includes a multiplicity of tubes having first ends that are received by a manifold housing. A polymer film is secured to the manifold housing and to the ends of each of the tubes. The film is arranged to seal the housing while leaving the openings of the tubes exposed to thereby create a manifold. In some embodiments, a potting material is used to reinforce the film. In a method aspect, a manifold may be formed by positioning first ends of the tubes in a manifold housing and welding a polymer film to the manifold housing and to distal tips of the tubes. Openings for the tubes are then formed in the film by directing heat towards the film which melts or vaporizes the film in the regions of the tube openings.

Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method that allows use of the same or similar material as the flow tubes for the supports and without requiring more expensive stainless or higher alloy supports. The disclosure provides one or more temperature moderated support tubes that allow the process fluid in the flow tubes to also pass through the support tubes. The benefit is that the process fluid moderates the temperature of the support tubes and hence the thermal expansion of the support tubes to be relatively consistent with the expansion of the flow tubes of the coil, and further benefits from additional heat transfer area using the support tubes. Thus, the support tubes can be made from the same or similar material as the flow tubes. The ledges/brackets could be also of the same material as the coil material.

  • Patent number: 8408284
Abstract: A heat exchanger assembly that includes an outlet header/manifold defining an outlet cavity, an outlet tube in fluidic communication with the outlet cavity, and a heat exchanger core. The outlet tube and the outlet cavity cooperate to reduce a temperature value range across the heat exchanger core by equalizing refrigerant distribution between the refrigerant tubes within the heat exchanger core. The length of the heat exchanger headers/manifolds may be increased for a predetermined packaging width because the outlet tube and inlet conduit may exit the headers/manifolds perpendicularly rather than axially, allowing the heat exchanger core width to be increased. The increased heat exchanger core width allows additional refrigerant tubes to be included in the heat exchanger core, providing decreased air pressure difference for air flowing through the heat exchanger assembly and increased heat capacity of the heat exchanger assembly.

Abstract: A heat exchanger and related methods are provided. An example heat exchanger has moveable or flexible joints between tubular members that contain flowing heating medium. The moveable joints allow the overall structure of the heat exchanger to adapt to expansion, contraction, and other stresses of high-temperature, high thermal-gradient operation. The moveable joints also provide breaks in the structure, enabling repair or replacement of parts. A negative internal pressure is maintained to prevent flue gases and heat from escaping through the moveable joints, and prevents contamination of the ambient environment and products being dried. Moveable support measures also allow each tier of tubes to expand or contract independently of each other to accommodate thermal gradients within a given tier of tubes, within a given manifold, and between tiers of tubes, so that virtually all of the thermal stresses associated with conventional heat exchangers are mitigated or eliminated.
