    Abstract: An apparatus and method of separating hydrocarbons from water and other well fluids produced from a reservoir. A controlled permeability filter selectively permits the flow of gas, oil and other hydrocarbons while restricting water flow through the filter. The permeability of certain gases or liquids through the filter can be controlled by adjusting the pressure differential across the filter. In one embodiment of the invention, the pressure differential can be selected by adjusting the filter location within a fluid column within the wellbore. In other embodiments of the invention, multiple filters can be positioned in the wellbore, and the permeability of a filter can be adjusted to control the passage of hydrocarbons therethrough.

The slender design allows mounting right on the production tubing. A rupture disc feature is available so that if excessive pressure differential is obtained due to clogging, the filter unit within the housing can be bypassed to allow continuing operation.

    Abstract: In accordance with this invention, a well for soil sparging and soil vapor extraction is provided. The well comprises a bore hole extending from the surface of the earth for several feet and preferably to the base of the clay layer. An impervious casing having a larger diameter than the bore hole is mounted concentrically around the bore hole and extends from a point above the surface of the earth to a point below the surface of the earth. The impervious casing is sealed at its top end by a cover plate. An injection tube is inserted into the bore hole wherein the injection tube terminates at a point above the bottom of the bore hole. The bottom most portion of the bore hole is filled with granular material. Above the granular material, the bore hole is filled with packing material that is substantially impervious to liquid and gas. Above the packing material, the remaining space in the bore hole is filled with permeable material which allows passage of gas or liquid.

    Abstract: A sand screen having a plurality of sintered, substantially spherical plastic members covering a perforated mandrel is releasably suspended from a packer mandrel by a locking mandrel and a landing nipple. The sand screen and locking mandrel are retrievable with the assistance of a running tool which is insertable into the bore of the locking mandrel. According to this arrangement, the sand screen can be removed and replaced without retrieving the packer or the production tubing. In one embodiment, the sand screen is enclosed within the bore of a sliding side valve. The sliding side valve can be opened and closed as desired for selectively admitting production from various producing zones, or for isolation of a damaged screen. In another embodiment, an auxiliary sand screen having a plurality of sintered, substantially spherical plastic members covering a perforated mandrel is inserted into the bore of a primary screen, for example, a conventional wire-wrap sand screen.

    Abstract: A well liner having a selective isolation screen with a limited or less restrictive seal. The well liner includes an elongate base pipe having openings therethrough; surrounded by circumferentially spaced, longitudinal extending spacer bars for forming an inner annulus; one or more annular cylindrical sleeves secured to the exterior of the base pipe; and a continuous wire wrapping surround the spacer bars except at interrupted areas where the isolated permeable seal sections are placed. These seal sections are located at predetermined vertical locations corresponding to specific well requirements of varying lengths and production formations within the wellbore. The continuous wire wrapping and spacer bars are inverted within the permeable seal sections so that the wire wrapping substantially fills the inner annulus and a multitude of spacer bars spaced approximately equal to or slightly larger than the spaces between the wire wrapping form the outer most surface of the seal sections.

    Abstract: Multiple sintered metal sand screen sections are mechanically coupled to a perforated screen mandrel in an arrangement which is capable of sustaining normal bending loads associated with run-in in highly deviated and horizontal well bores, without breaking the mechanical connections or otherwise damaging or impairing the structural integrity of the sintered metal screen sections. The multiple screen sections are held under compression by end collars. Adjacent screen sections are separated by annular spacing rings and by resilient seal rings which seal the union between adjacent end portions of the sintered metal screen sections. The end collars are welded directly onto the screen mandrel, with the sintered metal screen sections being stabilized about the perforated mandrel by longitudinal compression loading, so that it is not necessary to form a weld joint on the sintered metal material.

    Abstract: A well installation preform for locating and dispensing granular materials nto a bore hole around the screen of a well casing is disclosed. A cylindrical sleeve containing a liner is assembled about the screen end of the well casing. The space between the sleeve and the well casing is filled with an ordered layer of granular material including a filter material adjacent the screen, a sealing material above the filter material and the screen and a quantity of filler material above the sealing material. The lower end of the sleeve is blocked while the preform is lowered into the well. The sleeve is thereafter removed whereby the liner is everted and the granular material is uniformly dispensed about the well casing in the bore hole. The sealing material forms a seal above the filter material for establishing an isolated filtration zone about the screen. A method of constructing the well using the preform and the resulting well structure is also disclosed.

    Abstract: The flow apertures of a perforated mandrel are temporarily sealed by a foil covering sheet which is made of a sacrificial material, for example, zinc, aluminum and magnesium The sacrificial covering sheet prevents dirty completion fluid from passing through and in and out of the screen as it is run into the hole, thereby protecting the screen from plugging. During the time the screen mandrel is temporarily sealed by the sacrificial foil covering, cleaning fluid is circulated through the work string and is returned through the annulus between the screen and the open well bore for removing filter cake, drilling debris and lost circulation material. After the annulus has been cleaned, the annulus is filled with an acid solution or caustic solution, which dissolves the sacrificial foil and opens the base pipe perforations.

    Abstract: A tubular sand screen is made in one piece entirely of powdered metal slivers which are molded and sintered to form a metallurgically integral rigid tubular structure. Aggregate metal particles, for example, stainless steel slivers, are bonded together by interatomic diffusion as a result of sintering the compacted slivers under high temperature and pressure conditions. The sintered metal sand screen performs the function of the conventional prepack assembly as well as the screen function. In one aspect of the invention, the sintered metal screen is subjected to electropolishing to yield an effective porosity of 40-60 mesh, with an average pore size of 150 microns. Most of the surface irregularities are removed by electropolishing, and very few nucleation sites remain where particles in the size range of 74 microns-100 microns can become captured or otherwise lodged to cause plugging of the screen.

    Abstract: An apparatus is provided for use on a subterranean well conduit. The apparatus comprises a cylindrically shaped inner tubular member having an interior and exterior walls. A fluid flow passageway is provided within the interior wall and a fluid flow passage extends from the interior of the tubular member through the exterior wall and in communication with the fluid flow passageway. Retention mesh means are disposed around the exterior of the tubular member and pass across the fluid flow passage means having a fluid flow openings therethrough, the retention mesh means preventing particulate solids in a fluid permeable bed of the apparatus from passing into the fluid flow passage and into the fluid flow passageway through the subterranean conduit.

    Abstract: A process and apparatus for removing particulate matter from fluid wells where low pH conditions or high temperature exist. The process comprises forming a cylindrical shaped retainer having one closed and one open end. Said retainer has an inner and an outer wall which join with said closed end to provide a space between said walls. An open ended fused porous refractory tube is fitted within said space. Said retainer, with the refractory tube therein, is affixed to a delivery tube. This tube is directed into a formation where said refractory tube is used to control fines or sandflow entrained in fluids obtained from said formation. Being sandwiched between said walls, the refractory tube is protected from shock and is easily removed for cleaning. Said refractory tube is chemically resistant and endures high temperatures encountered during steam-flooding or steam injection.

    Abstract: Prepacked well screen and casing assembly for use in wells provides very substantial savings in the expense and time required to complete a well as compared to the conventional techniques of down-hole perforating and gravel packing. The assembly includes an external casing or liner member which would be provided with a large number of perforations during manufacture. A pipe base screen jacket assembly is positioned concentrically within the casing and attached to it by readily machinable upper and lower annular ring members. The hollow cylindrical annulus between the screen and casing is filled with a resin-coated gravel pack material which is cured after the fill operation to maintain its integrity. The assembly can be hung in the uncased producing zone of a new well by a liner hanger or could be placed in an existing cased well which is to be reworked by first milling away the existing casing in the production zone.

    Abstract: Apparatus for separating particulate matter from a flowing fluid which, for example, may be sand entrained in a flowing stream of oil and gas, comprises an assembly including a plurality of small diameter tubular elements, the walls of which have a selected permeability to said fluid. The tubular elements are held with their axes parallel between a pair of headers by suitable tension means. The interior of the tubes are connected to at least one plenum and to a well tubing. When this assembly is inserted into a well producing oil and gas which carries sand, the sand will be deposited against the outer walls of the tubular elements since the grain diameters are greater than the size of the openings in the walls of the tubular elements. The fluid flows through the openings in the wall of the tubular element, into the plenum and then through the well tubing to the surface of the well. By using suitable headers at each end, a plurality of these assemblies can be connected in series.

    Abstract: A pre-packed well point is provided having a central tube perforated only at the bottom end thereof. Coaxial with the inner tube is an outer screen and the inner and outer tubes are joined by suitable top and bottom end caps. Packed between the outer screen and the inner tube is a mass of particulate matter, such as gravel, glass nodules, activated carbon, polypropylene or, preferably, perlite. The pre-packed well point is inserted in the ground into position by vertically augering into the ground utilizing a hollow auger whose inner diameter is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the pre-packed well point. The bottom of the hollow auger is a separable bit. The hollow auger is driven into place by a portable drive mechanism mounted on a vehicle. When the hollow auger is driven, it drills a hole into the ground, with the spiral channels removing the dirt from the hole as it is being formed. When the auger reaches the desired depth, it is raised a short distance from the bottom of the hole.
