Surrounding Existing Rod Patents (Class 166/241.4)
  • Patent number: 11306548
Abstract: A spin-through drive rod centralizer consisting of a stator constructed of plastic, or other appropriate material, which is mounted on a rotor attached to the body of the drive rod, which provides the bearing surface for rotation of the rotor within the stator. The stator is equipped with multiple vanes which extend to the full internal diameter of the production tubing. In one configuration, the radially oriented vanes have cut-outs which allow the tip of the vane to compress inward, allowing passage through tight spots in the tubing, then rebounding to the full ID of the tubing. In another configuration, the vanes are tangentially attached to the stator body, such that they bend in a circumferential direction to allow passage through tubing tight spots, then rebound to full tubing ID.

  • Patent number: 11162307
Abstract: The low friction wireline standoff improves wireline cable performance during borehole logging operations. The use of low friction wireline standoffs ameliorates the effects of wireline cable differential sticking, wireline cable key-seating, and high wireline cable drags, by reducing or eliminating contact of the wireline cable with the borehole wall during the logging operation. The low friction wireline standoff comprises external wheels mounted on two finned half shells that clamp onto the wireline with precision cable inserts which are manufactured to fit a wide range of logging cables. The wheels reduce the cable drag down-hole resulting in lower surface logging tensions, aiding conveyance in deep and deviated wells.

  • Patent number: 10167682
Abstract: A spin-through rod centralizer consisting of a stator mounted on the rod coupling which provides the bearing surface for rotation of the coupling within the stator. The stator is restrained from such axial movement by two steel “washers” that are captured between the rod shoulders and the coupling when the connection between two rods is made up. The washers are slightly larger in diameter than the coupling and thereby keep the stator located on the coupling, yet do not restrict the relative rotation between the coupling and the stator. An alternative configuration uses a coupling with a shoulder at one end that acts as one of the “washers” to restrain the stator from axial movement.

  • Patent number: 8662186
Abstract: A backspin retarder for a progressive cavity pump deploys on the drive string uphole from a pump unit. The backspin retarder has a shaft that connects to portions of the drive string. An impeller disposes on the shaft and can move axially and radially. In an unengaged condition, the impeller and shaft can rotate relative to one another so the drive string can rotate in a drive direction without impediment from the impeller. In an engaged condition, the impeller rotates with the shaft in a backspin direction. In this way, vanes on the impeller can retard the backspin of the shaft and drive string by attempting to force the lifted fluid column flowing downhole past the impeller back uphole. The retarder can use a pin and slot arrangement or an arrangement of engageable teeth to engage the impeller to the rotation of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 8443882
Abstract: A tubular centralizer is secured to the tubular for run in. The profile for run in is small so that damage to the centralizer is minimized during run in. When the string is in position the centralizer is actuated to change shape or volume to engage the surrounding borehole to centralize the tubular for subsequent operations such as cementing or in the case of screens for gravel packing. The centralizer can be a shape memory material that is initially compressed at above its transition temperature to hold the smaller shape. At the desired location after run in it is brought above the transition temperature and changes back to the original shape or volume to centralize the tubular string. The structure can be spaced ring segments or a cohesive ring structure with an undulating profile or radiating blades to create flow spaces in the annulus where it is deployed for flow of a sealing material or gravel, for example.

  • Publication number: 20120292021
Abstract: A sucker rod guide includes a pair of vanes, offset from one another by 180°, with each vane wrapping approximately 180° around the rod guide. The vanes wrap around the body of the guide, and are neither spiral nor helical because the surfaces of the vanes extending radially outwardly from the body of the rod guide define two dimensional planar surfaces, i.e. flat planes. The vane thickness varies from a maximum at each end of the vane to a minimum at a midway point along the vane. This shape assists in moving fluid up the production tubing when the guide is applied to a rotary system, such as a progressive cavity pump. This shape also enhances the erodable volume of the vanes at the extremities, while providing a less inhibiting path for the flow of fluid in reciprocating applications.

Electrically insulating water stops are provided to act as flood control barriers in the event the outer pipe is breached. Collars on seals around the water stops may help avoid electrical shorts and packets of super-absorbent may be in place to further reduce the risk of electrical faults.

Abstract: An insert rod guide has an elongated cylindrical member with an externally threaded first or upper end of a first diameter and an internally threaded lower or second end of a larger diameter with an axial bore extending between the ends. Intermediate the ends of the member is a truncated conical shoulder with a plurality of regularly spaced bores angled outwardly from the axial bore through the shoulder. An annular sand shield is mounted externally on the member for axial movement therealong. The sand shield has one face which is tapered to mate with the shoulder. An annular hardened insert is mounted on the upper end of the member and is held in place by retainer collar.

  • Patent number: 6595284
Abstract: A one-piece wire guard device formed of non-metallic material for use in wells includes an inner ring having a split therein defining an opening and having a portion of reduced thickness defining a hinge is disclosed. Arcuate sections are disposed concentrically outwardly of the inner ring and are connected to the latter by ribs. The ribs, arcuate sections and inner ring cooperate with each other to define openings for accommodating electric wires, ropes and the like therethrough. A guard device may be flexed about its hinge from a normally closed condition to an open position to permit a drop pipe to be inserted through the opening defined by the split. Releasably locking means, including an elongated locking element, lock the guard device upon the drop pipe. Spacer tabs extend outwardly from the arcuate sections and engage a well casing to space the drop pipe from the casing and thereby prevent damage to the drop pipe, electrical wires, safety ropes and the like extending through the guard device.

Abstract: A centralizer for laterally positioning an instrument in an opening larger in diameter than the diameter of an opening through which the centralizer can freely pass. The centralizer includes spring blades affixed at one end to an outer surface of the instrument and extending axially to a stop collar rotatably positioned on the outer surface of the instrument. A latch is operatively coupled to the stop collar and is adapted to enable rotation of the stop collar about the instrument upon release of the latch.

  • Patent number: 6352107
Abstract: An elongated pump rod or sinkerbar for use in a pump rod string for a downhole reciprocating well pump is provided with an elongated sleeve of high density or ultra high density polyethylene over a major portion of the length of the sinkerbar to minimize wear on the sinkerbar and a well tubing string as a consequence of deflection of the sinkerbar into engagement width the tubing string and to minimize frictional drag on the pump actuating mechanism as a result of such engagement. The polyethylene sleeve may be assembled over the sinkerbar by apparatus including an elongated hydraulic actuator which may be configured to push a sinkerbar into the sleeve while the sleeve is held stationary within a support tube, or by holding the sinkerbar stationary on a support and pulling the sleeve over the sinkerbar and from a continuous length of tubing from which the sleeve is formed.

Abstract: The friction-reducing drill pipe component in the form of a sub (10) is adapted to form part of a drill string. The sub (10) comprises a tubular mandrel (12) having first and second ends for connection to adjacent components of the drill string. A sleeve (18) is mounted on the mandrel (12), and first and second stops on the mandrel (16, 20) restrain the sleeve (18) against axial movement relative to the mandrel (12). One of the stops (20) is removable or retractable to permit the sleeve (18) to be removed over the first end of the mandrel.
