  • Patent number: 11118423
Abstract: A downhole tool for use within a borehole. The downhole tool may include a body including a port that allows fluid flow between a bore of the downhole tool and an area outside of the body and a sleeve slidable from a run-in position to an actuated position. Either the run-in position or the actuated position may prevent flow through the port. Additionally, at least one of an end of the sleeve or a surface of the body may be coated in solder particles having an outer shell and a liquid metal core. Further, the solder particles may be rupturable when the sleeve is shifted to the actuated position into contact with the surface to expose the liquid metal such that the liquid metal solidifies and forms a bond to retain the sleeve in the actuated position.

  • Patent number: 10161198
Abstract: A method and apparatus for centering a casing section in a wellbore. A centralizer includes a plurality of centralizer bow springs arranged between and around circumferences of end bands. The end bands are arranged over stop collars such that the end bands can rotate about and slide along the stop collars. At least one stop collar includes a radially-inward-extending lug that engages a groove in the stop collar. The groove limits the amount by which the end band can slide relative to the stop collar. When the centralizer is lowered into a wellbore, an interference between the lug in the end band and the groove in the stop collar can pull the centralizer into the wellbore. The pulling force can prevent the centralizer bow springs from expanding radially outward due to contact forces with edges of the wellbore.

  • Patent number: 9982496
Abstract: A method of forming a centralizer where a flat plate is created into a tubular where the flat plate is typically rolled so that two sides of the plate contact one another and are then linked, typically by welding. Openings are then created in the tubular such that there are no corners or other points that stress cracks may originate. Once the openings are created the remaining material between adjacent openings forms ribs. The openings created in the tubular are generally aligned with the long axis of the tubular. The material at the upper and lower end of the flat plate where openings were not created serve as circumferential collars. The ribs may be radially outwardly expanded in order to provide adequate stand-off. In many instances the ribs will also be hardened by heat treating or other hardening processes.

Each of the ribs may include a first end section, a second end section, and a middle section extending between the first and second end sections. A first plurality of spacers may be spaced circumferentially apart from one another around the tubular. Each of the first plurality of spacers may be positioned circumferentially between two of the plurality of ribs. The first plurality of spacers and the first end sections of the plurality of ribs may be axially aligned and together at least partially define a first end collar.

Abstract: A centralizer for centralizing a pipe downhole in a well is provided. The centralizer includes a plurality of arcuate cuffs having first and second ends. The cuffs are affixed adjacent to the pipe's exterior wall, and positioned circumferentially adjacent around the pipe. The cuffs are flexible so as to be positioned in a first condition wherein the cuffs are retracted radially inward so as to be substantially flat against the pipe's exterior wall. The centralizer includes a lock for maintaining the cuffs substantially flat against the pipe's exterior wall until the centralizer has been transported downhole. Further, the centralizer includes an actuator for unlocking the lock so as to allow the cuffs to expand radially outward to form a loop wherein the loop has a central axis parallel to pipe's longitudinal axis. Preferably, the centralizer includes a collar causing the cuffs to all expand or retract together.
