  • Patent number: 6419020
Abstract: The hydraulic drilling method and system uses a tube bending tool attached at the down hole end of a pipe or stringer to direct a fluid tube in a generally horizontal direction from a generally vertical gas or oil well. The bending tool is attached to a compression set tubing anchor, lowered into the well at the end of a pipe or stringer and anchored at the desired depth in the conventional manner. A fluid tube having a jet nozzle end is lowered to the bending tool and slidably inserted in a bending channel therein. Hydraulic cutting fluid under pressure is then applied to the pipe and fluid tube to urge the fluid tube through the bending tool to exit horizontally for boring a drain hole in the surrounding underground formation. Once the drain hole is formed the fluid tube is removed. Additional drain holes may be formed by rotating the bending tool radially in the well and inserting a new fluid tube with jet nozzle then repeating the cutting fluid drilling.

Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for forming and reentering multiple lateral wells through a wall of a common well bore. The system includes an anchor, an orienting member, an extension member, a diverter and a probe releasably connected by one or more unilateral connections and a multilateral connection. The unilateral connection restricts rotational and translational movement of the system upon makeup, and maintains alignment between components thus joined in a single direction. The multilateral connection also restricts rotational and translational movement of the system upon makeup, however, enables alignment between components thus joined in multiple directions. Thus, use of the system enables lateral orientation of the diverter at multiple positions, positioning the diverter at multiple longitudinal positions and selective reentry of each lateral well formed.

  • Publication number: 20020074122
Abstract: Enhanced horizontal drilling systems and methods encompass the production of crude oil from wells drilled from a subterranean production facility. This approach has the location of the well head below the oil reservoir to improve flow rate and recovery due to the consistent voiding of fluids by gravity flow within the well bore to the well head allowing well bore production pressure to achieve extremely low fluid pressure or even a vacuum of up to 15 PSI. This method increases oil recovery rate and factor, and lowers production costs. The present method is production of shallow crude oil by way of long horizontal or near horizontal boreholes drilled and serviced from a subsurface workroom. The subsurface workroom serves as both the drilling platform and the place to which production is centrally accumulated from the wells. Oil is collected in a central facility and is then lifted to the surface utilizing pumps.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for unblocking particulate plugs that develop in a well that produces fluid laden with suspended particles when a pump in the well is idled are described. In order to remove the plugs, a valve is inserted in the production tubing above the pump, the valve permitting the well fluid to flow up past the valve but inhibiting the well fluid from flowing down past the valve so that a majority of particles that settle from the well fluid when the pump is idle are trapped above the valve and do not plug the pump. A volume of well fluid trapped between the bottom of the valve and the top of the pump permits pressure waves induced by starting and stopping the pump to be generated. The pressure waves force fluids past the valve until the particles in the plug are resuspended to permit production to resume. The advantage is a simple, low cost solution to a long standing problem which required pulling of the production tubing from the well in order to remove the particulate plug.

  • Patent number: 6325164
Abstract: The drilling device is for creating bore-hole branches in unconsolidated rock. The device includes a fully-controllable pilot drill head with drill rods attached thereto. The pilot drill head has an opening on its periphery. The pilot drill head has further outlet openings through which a reinforcing-action drill suspension may be dispensed into a site where a bore-hole branch is to be created. An inner drill head is mounted for longitudinal movement within the pilot drill head and may be deflected out of the pilot drill head and its path by a deflection part within the pilot drill head. Upon its deflection, the inner drill head is directed through the opening on the periphery of the pilot drill head and into a bore-hole branch site.

  • Patent number: 6308782
Abstract: A multi-lateral well has a casing, and has lateral wellbores which communicate with the casing through respective windows. A tool at the end of a coiled tubing string is introduced into the well, while disposed in a tool receiving recess of an auxiliary member that is releasably coupled against upward movement relative to the tool. At a selected vertical position within the casing, the auxiliary member is secured against further downward movement, and the releasable coupling is then interrupted to permit the tubing string to move downwardly with respect to the auxiliary member. The auxiliary member may have an inclined surface to deflect the tool into a lateral wellbore. When use of the tool is completed, the tubing string with the tool thereon is moved upwardly, and an arrangement is provided to limit upward movement of the tool relative to the auxiliary member, so that the tool and the auxiliary member are simultaneously withdrawn from the well.

Abstract: A method of installing multiple strings within a wellbore. The method utilizes a carrier string having carrier string joints, a plurality of side strings each having side string joints, and a carrier tool for transferring the weight of the side strings to the carrier string permitting the side strings to be held, raised, and lowered within the wellbore by holding, raising, and lowering the carrier string. The carrier tool includes a body having a threaded through bore extending through the body and at least one threaded blind bore on the body. The method comprises the steps of engaging the carrier string joint into the carrier tool at the through bore so that the carrier string extends vertically upward and downward from the carrier tool, and engaging side string joints into the carrier tool at the at least one threaded blind bore.
