  • Patent number: 10450852
Abstract: A formation monitoring well system accurately measures formation electrical properties behind the casing to determine water-oil contact positions and/or to assess the integrity of the cement seal over the life of the well. The well system includes a casing string having one or more formation monitoring modules embedded therein, each having a toroid sensor. During operation, current is provided to the casing string, and the toroid measures the current flowing into the formation. Also, the voltage drop between the sensor and an electrode positioned between the cement layer and formation may be measured. This data may then be processed to determine the resistivities of the formation and/or cement layer, whereby the cement seal quality, water-oil contact surface position, etc. may be extracted from the results.

  • Publication number: 20150144330
Abstract: A method is for use with subterranean formations, such as oil and/or gas reservoirs. In some examples (e.g., production examples), the method improves the production from that formation. Some of the examples of the method describe selecting both an exertive force (e.g., a pressure) to apply at a wellbore, but together with a drawdown pressure at the wellbore to modify operations (e.g., improve production) at that subterranean formation. The selection of one or both of the exertive force and drawdown pressure may be based on the downhole environment at that wellbore, which can include the porosity and/or permeability of a near-wellbore formation radially surrounding a wellbore. The exertive force and drawdown pressure may be specifically selected to modify the porosity and/or permeability of the near-wellbore formation.

Abstract: Improved methods are provided for the application of downhole oil or gas well treating agents, such as liquid corrosion inhibition agents. The methods involve first lowering a liquid retainer device into a well casing, preferably at or above the location of the well production zone, followed by introduction of a liquid treating agent. The presence of the liquid retainer device prevents substantial passage of the agent into the production zone, and forms a column of the liquid agent above the device. The retainer device is then withdrawn from the well so as to create a substantially uniform film of the agent along the inner surfaces of the well casing. In this manner, proper coating of the casing is achieved while preventing production losses owing to passage of the treating agent into the production zone. Abstract: This invention relates to improvements in the current recovery of gases and oil liquids from an underground resource such as shale by means of hydraulic fracturing “Fracking.” The main improvements consist of increasing the yield of gases and oil liquids from drilled wells as well as eliminating the use of water which is a major problem. Mobile processing equipment, to upgrade the recovered resource and to convert it to a marketable product, is conducted where the resource is thermally extracted, resulting in the elimination of pipelines to conventional upgraders which produce an intermediate which is thence delivered by means of pipeline or rail to a far away conventional refinery. This new mobile approach which will be situated at or adjoining the drilled wells will lower capital and operating costs, reduce emissions, facilitate permitting, and help reduce public opposition to “Fracking.

  • Patent number: 8833447
Abstract: The invention relates to a separating device for tubular flow-through devices (22) which serve for the extraction of liquids or gases from wells drilled in rock or deep wells, the separating device being suitable for the removal of sand and rock particles and comprising an annular stack (20) of brittle-hard annular disks, the disks (30) being stacked and braced in such a way that a separating gap (37) for the removal of sand and rock particles is present in each case between the individual disks (30), a coupling-on element (18, 19) at one or both ends of the annular stack (20), a clamping device at one or both ends of the annular stack (20), making it possible on the one hand to flexibly brace the brittle-hard disks (30) and on the other hand to variably fasten the annular stack (20) on the tubular flow-through device (22).

Abstract: An apparatus for reducing vibration in a downhole component includes: an electrically conductive auxiliary mass attached to the component and configured to vibrate in a direction corresponding to a direction of downhole component vibration and absorb a portion of the downhole component vibration; and a magnetic component configured to generate a magnetic field through the auxiliary mass having a direction at least partially perpendicular to the direction of auxiliary mass vibration, the magnetic field configured to induce a current in the auxiliary mass in response to auxiliary mass vibration. The apparatus has an auxiliary mass vibration frequency tuned relative to a selected natural vibration frequency of the downhole component to reduce vibration of the downhole component, the auxiliary mass vibration frequency based on a magnetic stiffness of the auxiliary mass, the magnetic stiffness based on a strength of the magnetic field and/or a resistance of the auxiliary mass.

  • Patent number: 8720545
Abstract: A method for drilling a wellbore includes drilling the wellbore by injecting drilling fluid into a top of a tubular string disposed in the wellbore at a first flow rate and rotating a drill bit. The tubular string includes: the drill bit disposed on a bottom thereof, tubular joints connected together, a longitudinal bore therethrough, a port through a wall thereof, and a sleeve operable between an open position where the port is exposed to the bore and a closed position where a wall of the sleeve is disposed between the port and the bore. The method further includes moving the sleeve to the open position; and injecting drilling fluid into the port at a second flow rate while adding a tubular joint(s) to the tubular string. The injection of drilling fluid into the tubular string is continuously maintained between drilling and adding the joint(s).
