Abstract: An internal bidirectional tubing plug for plugging a well to prevent well fluids from passing the plug in a well conduit until the internal components of the plug are pumped out of its body. The body of the plug connects to the well's tubing string. The body holds a petal assembly consisting of several petals and a tapered cork assembly located within an opening formed by the petals. Both assemblies are sandwiched between upper and lower pistons. Hydrostatic pressure on the bottom of the plug as it is lowered into the fluid filled well holds the petals within the body. The internal components of the plug are removed from the body by applying hydraulic pressure in the upper area of the plug. Abstract: A method is presented for connecting and disconnecting sections of a work string for use in a subterranean wellbore. A preferred method of disconnecting includes the steps of positioning a stinger and a downhole tool assembly of a work string adjacent upper and lower sealing rams, such as in a BOP and lubricator assembly. The sealing rams are closed, defining a first and second pressure zone adjacent the tool. A differential pressure is applied across the pressure zones, moving a piston element in the tool assembly. Axial movement of the piston element causes relative rotational movement of cooperating locking elements. In one embodiment, the locking elements are rotated to an unlocked position and then move relative to one another axially in response to a biasing spring. The relative axial movement of the locking elements results in unlatching of a latching assembly, thereby disconnecting the tool and stinger.

Abstract: A packer deactivation system can include a packer and a safety joint. Activation of the safety joint can prevent setting of the packer. A method for use with a subterranean well can include activating a safety joint in the well, and deactivating a packer connected to the safety joint, in response to the safety joint activating. Another packer deactivation system can include a safety joint and a packer drag block locking mechanism. Activation of the safety joint can operate the drag block locking mechanism, thereby preventing a drag block from displacing in a certain direction relative to a mandrel of a packer.

Abstract: Just above an oil wellbore, an example circumferential displacement tool grips a threaded coupling in performing a circumferential displacement method of properly tightening the coupling to an upper sucker rod and/or to a lower one. In some examples, upper and lower joints of the coupling are tightened sequentially and independently to ensure proper circumferential displacement at each joint. In some examples, during disassembly of a string of rods being withdrawn from the wellbore, the tool can unscrew the coupling selectively from either the upper rod or the lower one. In some examples, a controller monitors the tightening or unscrewing of a joint and derives a joint signature based on a series of torque and rotation readings sampled during the make or break operations. The controller, in some examples, identifies a defective joint by comparing the joint signature to a predetermined reference.

Abstract: A remotely actuated clamping device for a borehole seismic sensing system. The remotely actuated clamping device includes a clamping mechanism configured to engage a surface of a borehole by actuation of the clamping mechanism. The remotely actuated clamping device also includes a fluid based actuator configured to actuate the clamping mechanism. The fluid based actuator includes a chamber configured to be kept at a pressure that is isolated from an ambient pressure of the borehole. The fluid based actuator also includes a piston within the chamber. The chamber receives a pressurized fluid to move the piston within the chamber to actuate the clamping mechanism. The pressure used to actuate the clamping mechanism is independent of the ambient pressure of the borehole. Also disclosed are methods of operating the device.

Abstract: A down hole pressure isolation tool is placed in a pipe string and includes a pair of pressure discs having one side that is highly resistant to applied pressure and one side that ruptures when much lower pressures are applied to it. The weak sides of the pressure discs face each other. Rather than rupturing the discs by dropping a go-devil into the well, in some embodiments, a first of the discs is ruptured or broken by the application of fluid pressure from the well head or surface. Formation pressure is then used, in different ways according to the different embodiments, to rupture the remaining disc. In another embodiment, a gas generating assembly located between the discs is actuated to produce enough pressure to rupture the discs.

Abstract: A tool for locking and releasing a plug in a hydrocarbon well includes a sleeve having at least one pocket for receiving the plug's pin element, and at least one locking element which can be moved between a release position in which the pocket is open, and a locking position in which the pocket is closed. When locking the tool to the plug, the tool is moved in the hydrocarbon well to facilitate positioning of the pin element in abutment with the locking element, further movement bringing the locking element into an open position for receiving the pin element in the pocket, and the locking element is brought into a locking position such that the plug's pin element is locked in the pocket. When releasing the tool from the plug, fluid means are used for movement of the locking element into a release position.

Abstract: The invention concerns a method for installing an apparatus for monitoring physical parameters in an annulus of an oil and/or gas well having a well head. The apparatus comprises a sensor plug including a sensor and a flange assembly arranged with a bore holding a signal processing unit for communication with the sensor. The method comprises the following steps; installing the sensor plug including the sensor in a passage in the well head, which passage communicates with an annulus of the well, connecting a cable connector to the sensor plug, which cable connector is attached to an end of a cable, connecting the sensor of the sensor plug to the signal processing unit in the bore of the flange assembly, positioning the bore of the flange assembly essentially coinciding with the passage of the well head thereby inserting the cable connector into the bore and attaching the flange assembly to the well head thereby.
