  • Publication number: 20140048245
Abstract: A shear ram assembly including upper and lower ram blocks having blades positioned on opposing sides of pipe and other, more ductile items, and arranged to close around and shear the pipe and the more ductile items. The shear ram assembly includes pipe guide arms attached to the upper ram block and configured to guide pipe and other items into the path of the blades, and to be received by recesses in the lower ram block. Also included are wear plates mounted on top of the pipe guide arms and positioned to force the lower ram block to rise as the arms enter the recesses, thereby causing the gap between the blades to decrease so that the blades can better shear the more ductile items.

Abstract: A completion system and method adapted for use in wells having long lateral boreholes includes a mast assembly, a pipe handling mechanism, a pipe arm, a pipe tub, a pump/pit combination skid, a rig carrier, and a control system. The mast assembly can extend in a generally vertical direction, e.g., perpendicular to the rig carrier and/or the earth's surface, such that the rig can be placed directly adjacent to a wellbore, and the top drive or a similar drive system can be engaged with and move along the mast while remaining above the wellbore. The top drive can be engaged with a support fixture that resists torque and rotation during operation. The support fixture can in turn be engaged with the mast to transfer torque forces to the mast while being vertically movable along the mast to enable positioning of the top drive.

Abstract: A shear/seal ram provides a knife edge at the shearing edge and the knife edge is inclined to minimize the cutting force required and to leave a clean cut edge. The knife edge is presented in an opening of the ram, thus the opening is positioned at the axis of the BOP, and consequently the coiled tubing, before the coiled tubing is run through the BOP. A biasing means, such as for example a Bellville spring, forces a sealing sleeve against the underside of the ram to prevent leakage of pressure from below the BOP. Abstract: A subsea connection apparatus to allow connecting a surface blowout preventer stack and riser to a subsea wellhead is disclosed. The subsea connection apparatus uses a single cavity blowout preventer with a set of shearing blind rams. Hydraulically actuated wellhead connectors are secured to the top and bottom of the blowout preventer to allow connection to a subsea wellhead below the subsea connection apparatus and a well head hub profile on the lower end of a riser above the apparatus. A control system can operate both of the hydraulically actuated connectors and the blowout preventer independently. A frangible bore protector is disposed in the bore of the blowout preventer to protect the shearing blind rams from pipe, tools, and fluids being passed through the blowout preventer and can be sheared by the shearing blind rams along with any drill pipe in the bore.

  • Patent number: 8205678
Abstract: The present invention is a blowout preventer including a large frustoconical funnel, made of metal or other material. The large end of the funnel is placed over a well pipe (or other pipe) through which oil (or gas or other fluid) is blowing out. The small end of the funnel is connected to a return pipe. A high pressure pipe with a smaller diameter is inserted into the well pipe. Air is pumped under high pressure through the high pressure pipe, separating the oil and forcing the oil that is not kept down in the well pipe by the pressure up through the return pipe. The Bernoulli effect keeps the funnel on the well pipe. A gasket at the top end of the channel prevents leaks. Channels and rotating blades near the top of the funnel accelerate the flow, reducing pressure and increasing the suction due to the Bernoulli effect.

  • Patent number: 8186457
Abstract: A method of casing drilling a portion of an offshore well includes running a casing string with a drill bit assembly attached to it into a previously drilled portion of the well. Before the drill bit assembly reaches bottom, the operator attaches drill pipe to the casing string and lowers the casing string on the drill pipe. When the drill bit is at bottom, an upper end of the casing string should be below the blowout preventer. The operator then performs casing drilling by rotating the drill pipe. When at a desired depth for the casing string, the operator pulls the drill pipe from the well and lifts the casing string up until its upper end is at the rig floor. The operator then runs the casing string back into the well but using casing in this instance. The operator then cements the casing string.
