Patent number: 10959363Abstract: The active coulter system includes a pivotable support structure that vertically adjusts the position of an active coulter component to compensate for changes in the contour of a target field. In the preferred embodiment, a proximity sensor and an associated controller are in electronic communication with a linear actuator assembly. Based on data from the proximity sensor, the controller sends electronic instructions to the linear actuator assembly to automatically move the active coulter component vertically. The system also optionally includes a torque/speed sensor that can operate independently to control the torque and/or power supplied to the active coulter component, or the sensor can interface with the controller and anticipate changes in power needs and increase/decrease power before the operation of the active coulter component is affected.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2018Date of Patent: March 30, 2021Assignee: The United States of America, as represented by The Secretary of AgricultureInventors: Ted S. Patent number: 8151718Abstract: A seed meter for a planting machine is provided with an adjustable drive coupling between the seed meter and the planting machine main drive. The drive coupling includes a drive member connected to the planter drive and a driven member coupled to the seed meter shaft. The drive member and driven member are drivingly engagable with one another and held into the engaged position by a biasing member. The drive member and driven member are selectively movable relative to one another to a disengaged position, enabling adjustment of the seed meter relative to the drive by rotation of the meter shaft. Once released, the coupling self-engages.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 2009Date of Patent: April 10, 2012Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Nathan A. Mariman, Michael E. Friestad, Elijan Garner

Patent number: 7571688Abstract: A seeding machine having a plurality of seed meters receiving rotary input from a common input shaft. First and second gearboxes respectively connect the common rotary input to individual seed meters. A flexible drive extends from the gearbox adjacent the common rotary input to the seed meters. Spring clutches, normally connected, are electrically actuated to disengage the drive to the individual seed meters. The clutches may be integrated in the gearbox adjacent the rotary drive or the gear box for the individual seed meters.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2008Date of Patent: August 11, 2009Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Michael E. Publication number: 20020178981Abstract: A drive apparatus has a first and second shaft rotatably mounted on the agricultural fertilizer implement. A drive wheel is fixed to the first shaft and an output wheel fixed to the second shaft. There are a plurality of wheels coupled to the first shaft and a plurality of wheels of varying sized fixed to the second shaft. A flexible connecting means is trained between a pair of selected wheels on the first and second shafts. A drive means rotates the drive wheel. A connecting means couples output wheel to the metering device. An engaging means is coupled to each of the plurality of wheels located on the first shaft coupling the selected wheel on the first shaft with the first shaft so that the wheel will rotate with the first shaft. There is also a control means that allows a user to selectively activate one of the engaging means located on the first shaft. When one of the engaging means is activated, one of the plurality of wheels is coupled to the first shaft and begins to rotate with the first shaft.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 30, 2001Publication date: December 5, 2002Applicant: KEJR, Inc.Inventors: Paul E. Drummond, Colin D. Christy, Eric D. Lund

Patent number: 4779471Abstract: A compact drive assembly including a flexible drive for transmitting power from a ground engaging wheel or wheels to a driven mechanism such as a seed meter on an implement. A set of cross helical spur gears are mounted in an enclosed case. The input gear is clamped to the ground engaging wheel shaft, and the output gear is fastened to a shaft which drives a flexible cable. The flexible cable is enclosed in a flexible housing and is connected to the remainder of the drive train.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1987Date of Patent: October 25, 1988Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventor: Vernon E.
