  • Patent number: 8176989
Abstract: A wheeled support adapts a trimmer to function as a lawn edger. Because there are various trimmers to which the wheel may be mounted, an adapter plate is provided that is configured to match a selected trimmer on which adapter plate the wheel may be mounted. A bearing is provided between the adapter plate and the wheel so the wheel rotates freely on a drive shaft of a trimmer powered drive independent of rotation of the drive shaft. A mounting plate mountable to the wheel is typically provided for convenience of mounting the bearing and adapter plate to the wheel with the bearing fitting within the adapter plate and over the mounting plate. A trimmer cutter, which may be either a flexible line dispenser or a blade, typically is mounted to the drive shaft outside the wheel after the drive shaft passes through the adapter plate, bearing, mounting plate and wheel, although the cutter may mount inside the wheel.

  • Patent number: 7806196
Abstract: An edger has a main frame that can be advanced controllably relative to a subjacent terrain, a cutting assembly on the main frame, a drive for rotating the cutting assembly around a first axis, and material repositioning structure on at least one of the main frame and cutting assembly. The cutting assembly is configured to produce a trench in underlying terrain as the cutting assembly is rotated by the drive in operation. The material repositioning structure controllably repositions material dislodged from underlying terrain by the cutting assembly to thereby avoid accumulation of dislodged material upon the edger as the edger is operated.

The hand-held edger comprises a supporting rod 14 one end of which is connected to a prime mover, a gear box 20 connected to the other end of said supporting rod 14, a rotary blade 22 which is driven by power transmitted from said prime mover via said gear box 20, a safety cover member 12 which covers said rotary blade 22, and a traveling wheel 17 journal-supported by a rear portion 12b behind said gear box 20, wherein a ring-shaped traveling auxiliary wheel 30 is rotatably mounted over the circumference of said gear box 20.

  • Patent number: 5325928
Abstract: An electric edger having a transversely mounted electric motor for rotationally driving a vertically oriented cutting blade. The edger is supported by a pair of auxiliary rear wheels and a large on-center front or main wheel that is journalled to a hub that is mounted directly to the exterior of the motor field casing so that the wheel rotates about the motor. The rotational axis of the on-center wheel is substantially aligned with the cutting blade axis and the plane of the wheel is substantially aligned with the center of gravity of the motor subassembly. This configuration, together with the large diameter of the wheel, improves the balance and maneuverability of the edger, particularly around irregularly shaped borders and over uneven terrain, without increasing the overall dimensions of the unit.
