Abstract: An improved method is provided for operating a power tool. The method includes: monitoring rotational motion of the power tool about an axis using a rotational motion sensor disposed in the power tool; determining a direction of the rotational motion about the axis; and driving the output member in a direction defined by the detected rotational motion of the tool, where the output member is driven by a motor residing in the power tool. Thus, the output member is drive clockwise when the rotational motion of the tool is clockwise about the axis and the output member is drive counter-clockwise when the rotational motion of the tool is counter-clockwise about the axis.

Abstract: A hand tool impacting device may include, a drive shaft with an aperture, an impaler disk, and a floating pin positioned within the aperture of the drive shaft. A set of circular ramps on the outer edge of the impaler disk may interact with a stationary pin insert to translate the drive shaft and create an impacting motion. A pair of springs placed against either side of the floating pin may allow a specialized tool bit to engage or disengage the impaler disk, thereby allowing selective use of translational impacting motion, or rotational torque. An impact bit for engaging the impaler disk may include, a tool head configured to engage a work piece and a tool shaft configured to be inserted into a hollow drive shaft to engage a floating pin. According to one embodiment, the impact bit includes a number of sleeves to guide the tool head during operation.

  • Patent number: 8196673
Abstract: Apparatus for determining when a fastener has been tightened by an impact wrench comprises determining when the number of hammer impacts to advance an anvil of the impact wrench through a predetermined angle reaches a predetermined number. The cumulative angular displacement of the anvil from the first detected hammer impact is determined from the corresponding cumulative angular displacement of the hammer at the corresponding hammer impact from the first detected hammer impact. The cumulative angular displacement of the hammer is determined just prior to the direction of rotation of the hammer reversing at the corresponding hammer impact, and is determined by computing the difference between the cumulative angular displacements of the hammer at the corresponding and previous hammer impacts and subtracting an angle through which the hammer freely rotates between the two hammer impacts from the computed difference.

  • Patent number: 8186452
Abstract: A clamp system for an elongate member, comprising first and second clamp members, an actuator member, and an actuator system. The actuator member defines an actuator cam surface and is supported for movement between first and second actuator positions. The second clamp member defines a clamp cam surface and is supported for movement between first and second clamp positions. The actuator system displaces the actuator member between first and second actuator positions. As the actuator member moves from the first actuator position to the second actuator position, the actuator cam surface engages the clamp cam surface to cause the second clamp member to move towards the first clamp member, thereby clamping a portion of the elongate member between the first and second clamp members.

  • Patent number: 8181713
Abstract: A drop hammer for driving a pile. The drop hammer of the present invention comprises a housing member, a ram member, a helmet member, and a lifting system. The housing member defines a housing chamber and a vent port defining a preload position. The ram member is supported for movement within the housing chamber. When the lifting system raises the ram member above the preload position, ambient air substantially freely flows into and out of the housing chamber through the vent port. When the ram member falls below the preload position, ambient air within a preload chamber portion of the housing chamber compresses to apply a preload force on the inner portion of the helmet member. When the ram member moves into the lower position, the ram member impacts the helmet member to force the helmet member from the rest position to the impact position, thereby driving the pile.

A magnetic field is generated around the turning screw (19). A modulation of the magnetic field caused by the turning screw (19) is detected by an active magnetic-field sensor (38). A switch-off criterion is selected by a screw-recognition device (28) on the basis of the detected modulation. The turning of the screw (19) is stopped by a switch-off device (24) as soon as the switch-off criterion is met.

Abstract: A power tool including a motor for rotatably driving a tool bit at an attained rotational speed, a source for supplying an electric current to the motor, a sensor for measuring the current, and a control device. The control component fulfils the task of detecting a variation of the slope of the current in the course of time, and generates a control signal. The rotational speed of the tool is reduced in response to the control signal. The power tool automatically detects whether the work piece operated by the tool bit reaches a predetermined position by electronic control means. It may make sure that the screw is driven into a piece of wood and does not go beyond the predetermined position once it detects that the work piece reaches the position and carries out a changing action.

Abstract: A power tool and control method is disclosed. The power tool has a striker, which is guided along an axis parallel to an impact direction. A pneumatic chamber has a volume which varies with a movement of the striker along the axis. A valve device that is actuatable depending upon the movement direction of the striker connects the pneumatic chamber with an air reservoir. The valve device is actuated to open in the case of a movement of the striker in the impact direction and in the case of a movement of the striker against the impact direction is actuated to throttle or close. The throttled or closed valve device restricts an air flow flowing through it to a maximum of one tenth of the value as compared to the air flow in an opened position.

The energy-transfer element can move preferably between a starting position and a setting position, wherein the energy-transfer element is located, before a driving-in procedure, in the starting position and, after the driving-in procedure, in the setting position. According to another aspect of the application, the device comprises a mechanical-energy storage device for storing mechanical energy. The energy-transfer element is then suitable preferably for transferring energy from the mechanical-energy storage device to the fastening element.
