  • Patent number: 4278140
Abstract: A detachable undercarriage for use on adverse terrain vehicles comprises an elongate hollow load-bearing frame having three or four axles rotatably supported thereon. Sprockets are mounted on at least two of the axles, and chains are constrained around the sprockets to drivingly interconnect the axles. The center axle in the three axle embodiment and the center two axles in the four axle embodiment are positioned below a plane extending through the axes of rotation of the outermost two axles to facilitate skid steering of vehicles incorporating the undercarriage. Alternatively, all the axles can be aligned with larger wheels mounted on the center axle in the three axle embodiment or the center two axles in the four axle embodiment to facilitate skid steering. In certain applications of the nonaligned axle embodiments structure is provided for selectively aligning all the axles to increase vehicle stability.

  • Patent number: 4265304
Abstract: Disclosed are coiled tubing apparatus for operating on wells. A tubing injector head is supported on a mast and is moveable to selected elevations along the mast. The mast includes a lower section maintained in upright orientation, and an upper section which is pivotally joined to the lower section. The injector head may be lowered below the pivot point and the mast folded for transportation purposes. A chain drive maneuvers the injector head in one horizontal direction, and a fluid pressure cylinder maneuvers the injector head in a second horizontal direction generally orthogonal to the first. The chain drive is fitted with a worm gear coupling to positively lock the injector head in position. A height-adjustable level wind tubing guide directs the tubing onto or off of a reel. The base of the apparatus is fitted with a track along which a blowout preventer may be moved for subsequent positioning over a well.

  • Patent number: 4249600
Abstract: Disclosed is a system including two or more fluid pressure piston-and-cylinder assemblies. The cylinders are linked in pairs so that retraction of both piston rods reduces the length of the pair of assemblies to the length of a single assembly. Operation of both pistons in a pair provides an effective stroke twice the length of a single assembly stroke. In a particular embodiment, a double cylinder system is used as a pickup system for elevating equipment along a mast in a well workover rig.

  • Patent number: 4232752
Abstract: A casing hammer for driving casing while drilling a water well comprises a housing having an annular pneumatic chamber with a relatively lightweight, short-stroke annular piston. The piston is reciprocably driven at a high rate to provide a large number of light blows of controllable energy upon an annular anvil that seals one end of the chamber. Percussive blows upon the anvil are transmitted through a drive head and adapter to the upper end of the pipe to be driven. The hammer is suspended from a rotary drive head that operates a hollow drill string extending downwardly through the hammer and through the casing driven thereby.

  • Patent number: 4193459
Abstract: A vehicle-supported post-hole driver comprises a frame adapted to be mounted on the pivot of the vehicle drawbar. It is supported in a fore-and-aft position by a fluid cylinder connected between the frame and the support vehicle, the fluid cylinder providing for fore-and-aft movement of the outboard end of the frame. A second fluid cylinder pivots the frame about the drawbar pivot thereby transversely positioning the outboard end of the frame. The outboard end of the frame supports a pivotally-mounted yoke into which a pivotally-mounted vertical guide bearing is positioned. The combination of the pivoted yoke and the pivoted guide bearing provides a gimbaled arrangement. Slideably positioned in the guide bearing is a vertical shaft to which is attached a drive hammer and post-hole bit assembly. The drive hammer is raised relative to the post-hole bit by means of a fluid cylinder mounted within the bit and connected to the drive hammer. It drops gravitationally and drives the bit into the ground.

  • Patent number: 4191263
Abstract: Sample gathering apparatus for drivably moving a core sampling assembly into and out of subterranean zones for gathering core samples therewithin, with the apparatus including an elongated frame means which is adapted for adjustable pivotal mounting upon a supporting vehicle. Drive means are provided for delivering power to the core sampling assembly, and coupling means are further provided for releasably securing the drive means to the core sampling assembly. The core sampling assembly is arranged to be driven vertically into the subterranean zones to be sampled, and the coupling means which releasably secures the drive means to the core sampling assembly permits pivotal motion of the core sampling assembly about a generally horizontal axis so as to permit pivotal lifting of the core sampling assembly from the ground surface for easy removal of the sample retained therewithin.
