Automatic Control Of Power Operated Means Patents (Class 173/2)
  • Patent number: 6978846
Abstract: In a power impact tool for fastening a screw or a bolt, malfunction that driving of a motor is stopped before the screw or the bolt is fastened completely can be prevented. A fastening judger judged that the fastening operation is completed at least when a torque variation ratio becomes substantially zero and a reference index becomes equal to or larger than a threshold value of trouble judgment. The reference index is a number of impact of a hammer in a term in which the torque variation ratios take positive values, and the threshold value of trouble judgment is calculated with using a maximum value of the torque variation ratio in the term. Since the number of the impact of the hammer due to trouble in fastening operation is smaller than that due to the screw or the bolt is fastened completely, it is possible to distinguish the increase of the torque in the former case from the increase of the torque in the latter case.

Abstract: A drill/driver (e.g. an electric drill) with a screwdriver bit attachment, and a method of controlling the drill/driver, are described. This method of control will greatly reduce the occurrence of stripped screw heads on most types of screws. By periodically stopping insertion of a screw and reversing direction of the screwdriver bit, the screwdriver bit will be reinserted fully back into the screw head. By ensuring the screwdriver bit is always fully inserted in the screw head, the stripping of a screw head will be prevented. This can be easily implemented on most types of powered screwdrivers including the most common device used for screw insertion on a construction job site, the cordless drill/driver.

  • Patent number: 6971567
Abstract: A fastening tool that drives a fastener into a work-piece. The tool includes a motor that is connected to a transmission. The transmission includes a flywheel. The tool also includes a driver mechanism that is adapted to drive the fastener into the work-piece. The flywheel is connected to the driver mechanism when the flywheel is in a flywheel firing position. The tool includes a control module that detects a flywheel position and compares the flywheel position to the flywheel firing position. The control module also adjusts the flywheel position based on the comparison. The control module ensures that the transmission has enough rotations to ensure that enough momentum can be generated to drive the fastener into the work-piece.

Abstract: A method of calibrating the control current startup threshold in a proportionally controlled drive system for a work vehicle is disclosed. To determine a current threshold value for use in the system a control current exhibiting a relatively low value is first applied to the system. Subsequently, the steps of repetitively increasing the control current to a control current start value at which system motion starts and decreasing the control current to a control current stop value at which system motion substantially stops are repetitively conducted. The resultant control current start values and control current stop values are stored in a memory. The stored control current start values and control current stop values are is then averaged to determine a control current threshold value for use in controlling the system.

Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a method and apparatus for improving the operating life of gas powered hammers such as are typically mounted on the hydraulic booms of construction equipment for breaking up rocks and/or debris. When a hammer of this type is fired without its tool coming into contact with a target object, the hammer body itself is often damaged by the internal impacts caused by the blank firing of the hammer. The present invention minimizes the damaging blank fires by determining the load on the hammer tool and preventing the hammer from firing if a no-load or low load condition exists. The load is determined based upon the pressure of the gas in the hammer gas supply or the position of the hammer tool with respect to the hammer body. In addition, a reserve gas supply and regulator are utilized to minimize the need to refill the hammer's gas supply and insure that the hammer operates at maximum power.

Abstract: Power tool (1) may include a drive source (22). A device for generating an elevated torque, such as a hammer (4) and anvil (2), may be operably coupled to the drive source. Further, a trigger switch (48) may energize the drive source. Preferably, a sensor (30) detects when the hammer has begun to strike the anvil and generate the elevated torque. A control device (38) communicates with the sensor, the trigger switch and the drive source. Preferably, the control device may control the drive source according to either a measurement mode or an automatic stop mode. In the measurement mode, the control device preferably activates the drive source when the trigger switch is switched from the OFF position to the ON position, and stop the drive source when the trigger switch is switched from the ON position to the OFF position.

  • Patent number: 6655471
Abstract: An impact tool control method and apparatus and an impact tool using the same. Pulses of torque applied to a fastener by the impact tool are measured. The duration and magnitude of the torque pulse are subtracted from a torque signal and the resulting difference is integrated over time to obtain a fastener angular velocity signal. The angular velocity signal is integrated over time to obtain a displacement signal which can be converted to a torque signal. The impact tool can be controlled based on the value of the torque signal.

Thereafter, the control device only controls the operation the drive source based upon signals generated by the sensor after the fastener has reached the seated position against the workpiece.

Abstract: It is an object of the invention to provide work control system that can prevent an interference of the transmitting signals of the power tools in relation to the work progress. A representative work control system according to the present teachings may include a plurality of power tools and detecting device. Each of the power tools may transmit signals relating to the work progress. The detecting device may detect the work progress of each of the power tools by receiving and detecting the signals transmitted from the respective power tools. The signals relating to the work progress may be transmitted from each power tool several times. Preferably, the transmission intervals may vary among the power tools in order to prevent the signals from being confused.

Abstract: It is an object of the present invention to provide a technique to increase efficiency of the output torque of the blushless motor to drive a power tool. A representative power tool may comprise a tool bit, a brushless motor to drive the tool bit, a battery to operate the brushless motor and a control device. The control device may operate the brushless motor by means of the battery. The control device may include an advance angle controlling section to control an advance angle of the brushless motor. According to the present teachings, the advance angle of the brushless motor may be determined based upon indexes that reflect working condition of the tool bit when the brushless motor is under the operation. By reflecting the working condition of the tool bit to the determination of the advance angle of the brushless motor, the brushless motor can be operated with higher efficiency under the various working condition such as a hard joint operation and a soft joint operation.

  • Patent number: 6575253
Abstract: A hammer system for automatically carrying out a standard penetration test is disclosed. A cylindrical housing, in which an anvil coupled to a drill rod is received, is supported by a first hydraulic cylinder coupled to boring equipment. A cylindrical hammer is received in the housing. The hammer includes a holding assembly therein, which selectively holds and raises the hammer by a second hydraulic cylinder. Element for limiting a stroke of the hammer is spacedly connected to the holding assembly to be raised and lowered therewith. The limiting element includes a first sensor to detect a slot formed at the housing when the hammer is raised, thereby counting the number of blows. The hammer includes a plurality of protrusions on its outer surface. A wall of the housing includes a second sensor to detect the number of protrusions passed over the second sensor when the hammer is raised, thereby calculating a penetration depth from a difference between the numbers of protrusions detected for two continuous blows.

  • Patent number: 6559613
Abstract: An open end power wrench includes an operating scheme that identifies when the item within the drive socket is an item that should be rotated by the drive socket. The method for controlling the tube nut wrench includes the steps of operating the motor to generate an output torque. The method then measures an angle of rotation through which the drive socket rotates. The angle of rotation is then compared with an angle defined by the clearance opening. The output torque is limited to a minimal torque level when the angle of rotation of the drive socket is less than the angle defined by the clearance opening. The method then increases the output torque to an operating torque level when the angle of rotation of the drive socket exceeds the angle defined by the clearance opening.
