Abstract: A flexible, gas tight electrical coupling for a gas cooled electrodynamic system such as an electrical generator includes a first connector element that is in communication with a first combined coolant and electrical path and has a first passage defined therein for a coolant, a second connector element that is in communication with a second combined coolant and electrical path and has a second passage defined therein for the coolant, a flexible tube for communicating the first passage in the first connector element with the second passage in the second connector element, and an electrical connection for electrically connecting the first connector element to the second connector element. According to one aspect of the invention, the electrical connection is external to the flexible tube, resulting in cost savings and other advantages when compared to an internal electrical connection.

  • Patent number: 5670860
Abstract: A charging system employing a liquid-cooled transmission cable for transferring power. The transmission cable has a central tube with an extruded member disposed therewithin for carrying coolant. A plurality of layers of coaxial tubular wire braid are disposed around the central tube that carry charging current and that are separated by a layers of dielectric material. An outer layer of wire braid is disposed around an outermost layer of dielectric material that is used for grounding and/or shielding. An outer jacket is disposed around the outer layer of wire braid for encasing the transmission cable. The extruded member may comprise a thermoplastic rubber extrusion, for example. The coolant path through the transmission cable is internally supported by means of the extruded member to assure uniform flexibility, maintain tangential magnetic flux, and eliminate kinking and collapse of the flow path.

  • Patent number: 5612508
Abstract: A flexible jumper is made by arranging a series of stranded conductors around a hollow core, placing a sleeve over the ends of the arranged conductors and then crimping the sleeve and conductors to provide a more dense conductor annulus between the sleeve and core. The solidified and concentric circularized conductor ends are soldered into a socket of respective terminations without the solder wicking up the conductors. A hose is sealed to each termination and water is circulated through the jumper. The jumper is more efficient, easier to make, and has a longer service life.

Abstract: A conductor splice and splice support structure and method of assembly for use with cable-in-conduit superconductor cable of the type having a plurality of spaced sub-cables each including stabilizer and superconductor strands in an annular tube. Two transition ramp members, each having a cross section varying from a first end conforming to the cable configuration to a second end having an enlarged, oval, configuration have a plurality of surface grooves each sized to hold one sub-cable. Between the two transition ramp members is provided a main support member having grooves aligned with the transition members grooves. The main support member grooves are sized to hold two overlapping sub-cables. Preferably, a braid of superconductor material is placed around the overlapping sub-cable ends. The space within the grooves surrounding the sub-cables is preferably filled with solder.

  • Patent number: 5591937
Abstract: A transmission cable system that incorporates cooling channels that encircles electrical conductors with coolant. The transmission cable system also provides for breach or leak detection. More specifically, the transmission cable system maybe used with an inductive charging system that transfers electric power from a power source to batteries of an electric vehicle. The cable system includes a cooling system for storing, cooling, and pumping coolant, and a pressure sensitive switch for determining the pressure in the cooling system and for providing an output signal indicative of a drop in sensed pressure. A controller is coupled to the pressure sensitive switch that is responsive to the output signal from the switch for shutting down the inductive charging system in the event of a drop in sensed pressure. The transmission cable is electrically coupled between the power source and the electric vehicle for coupling electrical power to the batteries.

  • Patent number: 5545854
Abstract: A novel grommet assembly for securely sealing a wire harness or cable to an automotive panel opening is achieved with separate, identical grommet halves whose components are axially assembled. The assembled grommet halves are radially mated over the cable and lockingly inserted into the dash panel opening to provide an airtight seal between the cable and the opening. The grommet assembly includes rigid inner and outer shell portions which are axially locked to sandwich a resilient seal therebetween. The seal essentially fills the space between the inner and outer shells, and is both axially and radially compressed upon assembly of the grommet halves, and further when the grommet halves are mated over the cable. The compressive forces on the seal ensure a secure, airtight sealing interface with the cable, between the components of the grommet assembly, and with the dash panel.

  • Patent number: 5477007
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a twisted conductor in which better use is made of the material and at the same time the structural dimensions are reduced. The partial conductor has a sharp bend so that the two partial conductor stacks are mutually parallel and leave a space between them. An intermediate piece is fitted in this space in the region of the bend. Thus there is a cooling channel in the twisted conductor for the radial flow of coolant. To ensure that the partial conductor bunch forms a coherent twisted conductor there is a casing in the region of the bend. This casing is a glass-cloth binding pre-impregnated with epoxy resin in the B state. Because of the improved filling factor, the structural height of the transformer can be reduced, resulting in the elimination of the paper insulation itself and the longitudinal intermediate pressboard layer. Moreover, the intermediate pieces can be thinner since there is no longer any need to allow for the expansion of the paper in the spacers.
