  • Patent number: 5374789
Abstract: An electrical assembly, such as an insulator or a surge arrester, having an elastomeric weathershed housing, a pair of end fittings, and a pair of sealing systems for coupling and sealing the interfaces between the end fittings and the ends of the weathershed housing. Each of the end fittings has a bore for receiving an end portion of the weathershed housing, and an annular flange extending inwardly from the bore for engaging and compressing the end portion of the weathershed housing inwardly to form a primary annular seal without crimping the end fitting against the weathershed housing. At least one locking ring is positioned between the end portion of the weathershed housing and the inner surface of the bore for forming a secondary annular seal. Additional sealing can also be provided by axially compressing the weathershed housing between the end fittings.

  • Patent number: 5336852
Abstract: An electrical assembly, such as an insulator or a surge arrester, utilizing a pair of end collars for coupling an elastomeric weathershed housing to a pair of metallic end fittings, and for reducing electrical stress at the interface of the ends of the weathershed housing and the end fittings, and for sealing the ends of the weathershed housing to the end fittings. In particular, a radially directed force is applied to the weathershed housing by insertion of the core member into the axial bore of the weathershed housing causing radial outward expansion of the weathershed housing into intimate contact with the end collars. Also, each of the ends of the weathershed housing is held in contact against the inner end of the respective end fitting to seal the interface therebetween. Accordingly, a watertight seal is created at the interface between each of the end fittings and the ends of the weathershed housings.

  • Patent number: 4845318
Abstract: The invention provides an electrical insulator comprising a cylindrical core (2) of an insulating refractory material, such as porcelain, onto a portion of the curved surface of which a sleeve (8) of insulating polymeric material is fitted. Metal end-caps (4), for electrically connecting the insulator, are fitted to the ends of the porcelain core such that there is an exposed portion (10) of the curved surface of the core between the sleeve and each end-cap. Thus, any damaging electrical activity which takes place at the metal end-caps is directed primarily onto the surface of the porcelain core (2), and not onto the surface of the electrically vulnerable polymeric sleeve (8), which serves to protect mechanically the relatively brittle porcelain core. Optionally, the polymeric sleeve (8) may have a convoluted or a shedded outer surface (12) to increase the leakage path length of the insulator, or to prevent the formation of a continuous moisture path, or both.

The method comprises placing a sheath of unvulcanized elastomer on a core, which for example is a fiberglass rod, for example by extruding the sheath thereon, and mounting vulcanized sheds on the sheath therealong, then vulcanizing the sheath to form an integrated high voltage resistant member. The sheath is unvulcanized when the sheds are mounted thereon and then the sheath is heated to vulcanize it, in order to bond it to the sheds and to the core. The sheds also can be molded directly onto the sheath together therewith in steps along the length of the core. • Patent number: 4185161
Abstract: A modular lightweight, high voltage guyline insulator for VLF antennas. A glass fiber or "Kevlar" rod tension member that provides high tensile strength is enclosed by a porcelain jacket, which serves as a good high voltage insulator, preventing an arc breakdown along the surface and protecting the tension member from exposure to ultraviolet radiation which could cause the tension member to deteriorate. A rubber sleeve extends between each end of the porcelain jacket and a guyline fastening means, and together with the porcelain jacket forms a cavity or chamber around the tension member which is filled with SF.sub.6 gas, pressurized to 2 to 4 atmospheres (29.4 psia to 58.8 psia). Metal strips and metal toroid corona rings act to diffuse the electric field.

  • Patent number: 4127741
Abstract: For fixing metal sheaths on glass fiber reinforced plastic rods, which rods are used, for example, in composite insulators: the sheath is in a number of sections in a longitudinal array; there is an abutment inside the sheath at each sheath section, there is a shoulder piece on the outside of the rod inside each sheath section; the abutment in a sheath section is at one longitudinal side of the respective shoulder piece in that sheath section; elastic and compliant buffer means, such as springs, or the like, are placed between the abutment and its shoulder piece; the compliance of the buffer means increases toward one end of the arrangement to compensate for the different rates of expansion of the sheath and the rod; other embodiments all have appropriate buffer means in each sheath section, which buffer means increase in compliance moving toward the end of the sheath through which the rod exits.

Abstract: An improved linear or rod insulator for electrically insulating a first electrical potential from a second electrical potential. The improved linear insulator comprising a nonconductive cylindrical linear core member having a conductive first mounting means secured to a first end of the core member and a conductive second mounting means secured to the second end of the core member. The first and second mounting means being attached to a first and a second electrical potential, respectively. The improved linear insulator further comprising a plurality of nonconducting disc shaped toroidal sheds coaxially secured to said core member, and a plurality of conducting bowl shaped toroidal shields coaxially secured to said core member and positioned alternatingly with said sheds so that each of said sheds is located intermediate two of said shields.

  • Patent number: 4057687
Abstract: Structure intended to transmit great mechanical stresses, comprising an elongated core comprising at least an agglomerated glass fibre rod and fixing armatures fitted to the ends of the core, comprising means exerting radial compression stresses or stresses tending to jam the rod and maintaining at least partly those efforts in a zone of the structure situated in the armatures, even when the structure is not subjected to mechanical stresses. The structure has application to insulators for electric apparatus, stays, suspension of electric power conveying lines.FIELD OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention concerns a structure intended for transmitting great mechanical stresses, comprising an elongated core comprising at least one rod of agglomerated glasse fibres and fixing armatures fitted to the ends of the core, by means of which the mechanical efforts are transmitted. It relates more particularly to an improvement in the connection between core and armature of such structures.

  • Patent number: 4045604
Abstract: A hollow structure for use as an electrical insulator or other similar structure having outwardly disposed flanges extending circumferentially thereabout. The hollow structure includes a hollow member of heat recoverable material positionable about a central insulator core, electrical conduit, fuse or other substrate. The outwardly extending flanges are integrally formed with the hollow member and extend radially therefrom in the dimensionally heat stable state. The hollow member is designed to be expanded to a heat recoverable state for later facile positioning about an appropriate substrate. The hollow member may then be heat recovered about the substrate to become securely positioned thereon. Proper selection of the hollow member as to its dimensionally heat stable inner diameter relative to the inner diameter of the substrate results in control of the orientation of the flanges once the hollow structure has been recovered about the substrate.
